This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

LAPD Chief William Bratton continues to put his head in the sand when it comes to at least one of the motivations behind gang violence in Los Angeles: race. Whether it comes to Special Order 40 or the motive for the murder of Jamiel Shaw, the Police Chief arrogantly and irrationally denies that race could ever be a factor.
On the other hand Sheriff Lee Baca is more realistic and feels that - according to the LA Times - "racial animus among various gangs a serious problem that is not being discussed enough." If we continue to follow Bratton into a mire of political correctness a lot more innocent people are going to die. Does the Chief want that blood on his hands?Labels: chief william bratton, Jamiel Shaw, sheriff lee baca, special order 40
Joseph Mailander has a great piece detailing how Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's re-election chances are in trouble. An interesting note that Joe makes, of the folks around town he talks to the one remark he keeps hearing over and over again is people who say they won't vote for the Mayor "again."Labels: chief william bratton, joseph mailander, mayor antonio villaraigosa, special order 40, taxes
For the last few days, the editorial staff at Mayor Sam has received and rejected numerous slanderous comments trying to make the claim that murdered teenager Jamiel Shaw was a gang member, and hence he was killed because of his gang affiliation, not his race. The pro-Special Order 40 crowd has a strange need to maintain their position by creating this apparent falsehood.Labels: Jamiel Shaw, jamiel shaw sr., special order 40, walter moore

A FoxNews report on a gang member who claims he has been paid by Councilmember Janice Hahn for "gang intervention programs" is creating a huge buzz around City Hall. The gang member who has been arrested for issues ranging from indecent exposure to possession of marijuana and said that Hahn assisted him in getting out of jail. Now the individual has been convicted to life in prison in a rape case. Some community activists are calling for District Attorney Steve Cooley to investigate Hahn's actions and gang intervention projects funding. The report also details other gang members who have received gang intervention funds and police officers who claim that these gang members bragged about their city funding and laugh at Hahn for the irony of it all.Labels: britney spears, dennis zine, gangs, gloria molina, hal netkin, jamie lynn spears, jamiel shaw sr., Jamiel's Law, janice hahn, special order 40, steve cooley, taco trucks

In the race to find a reason to oppose Jamiel's Law local politicians try to point to the validity of Special Order 40 by saying that the move was none other than the brainchild of controversial former LAPD Chief Daryl Gates. It appears Gates is no longer on the Special Order 40 train. Though he feels that fighting gangs requires a far more holistic approach than just Jamiel's Law (and I don't think Walter Moore or Jamiel Shaw, Sr. would disagree with that), Gates says Special Order 40 "has been following me all these years" and "was written at a different time in (the city's) history."Labels: chief daryl gates, chief william bratton, jamiel shaw sr., Jamiel's Law, special order 40, walter moore
There is a press conference tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in front of Parker Center with the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), Hermandad Mexicana Lationamericana (HML), the Labor Community Strategy Center (LCSC) and other civil and immigrant rights organizations. They are urging the Mayor of Los Angeles and the City Council to reject the Zine/Smith amendments to Special Order 40.
Click here for the full statement released by the groups; below is an abbreviated version by MAPA and HML National President, Nativo V. Lopez:
“The ‘tough on crime’ posture of many city leaders is fostering right wing, anti-immigrant forces in the region. It’s twisting the tragedy of violence in the streets and advancing policies that will weaken civil liberties and give the LAPD carte blanche to racially profile Chicanos, Latinos, immigrants and young people of color.
“I join others in calling upon Mayor Villaraigosa, the L.A. City Council and Chief Bratton to not only maintain Special Order 40 as written, but also to expand it. Los Angeles should be made to be a Sanctuary City for immigrants. While Mayor Villaraigosa’s 27 March letter to ICE concerning workplace raids is an important statement, we strongly oppose any open-ended invitation for ICE to crack down on so-called ‘immigrant criminals.’ It has been well documented that during the mass ‘anti-immigrant crime’ sweeps led by ICE last October, scores of people taken into custody were collateral arrests of immigrants innocent of any offense. As such, we collectively urge an unequivocal and sound rejection of the Zine/Smith motion, to assure all immigrants that they will not be targeted but rather protected inside the borders of the City of Los Angeles."
(Full Disclosure - I consult for both MAPA and HML.)

KTLA's Frank Buckley has an interesting post on his blog about Jamiel's Law. Buckley talks about the Shaw's 18 year plan for Jamiel - which was on track remarkably until he was shot as part of an alleged Latino gang hit on a Black youth - the Shaws had for their son. He calls on law enforcement and elected officials to look at the issue of gang violence and the part that illegal immigration plays in it.Labels: chief william bratton, frank buckley, Jamiel Shaw, Jamiel's Law, special order 40
Crime is down in the Valley but still up overall citywide. Despite a "moratorium" on murder called for by members of the City Council, a significant wave of murder and violence swept across LA this weekend. One thing city leaders could to make a big dent in gang violence is to support Jamiel's Law and at least give the Police the opportunity to thin out criminal illegal aliens from Los Angeles. The parents of Jamiel Shaw II - a young, innocent high school student allegedly shot by an illegal alien who had been released from jail hours before - are going to City Hall Tuesday morning to support the overturning of Special Order 40 for criminal illegal alien gangs.Labels: britney spears, charter schools, city nerd, crime, foothill cities blog, Jamiel's Law, Jerry Brown, lausd, mayor antonio villaraigosa, pulitzer prize, special order 40
When Walter Moore first introduced Jamiel's Law, the usual third and fourth floor spin chamber (and their wannabe friends) dum dums put keyboards in motion to make the racist claim that there was no way that an African-American family who lost their teenage son to a criminal illegal alien gang banger was going to join with a White man to oppose the City's controversial Special Order40 policy at least against criminal illegal aliens, most of whom prey on black and brown neighborhoods. Please help us change the law. As you know, our son, Jamiel A. Shaw,II was murdered on March 2, 2008. Now we are trying to fight back, but we need your help!
On April 8, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., The Shaw Family will be going to City Hall to speak to the Council Members about 'JamielsLaw'. We are asking you to please visit the website, 'JamielsLaw.com'. If you agree with JamielsLaw, we are asking you to support us and join us!!

The announcement is actually Wednesday morning, not Tuesday morning. Jamiel's Law applies ONLY to gang members. We should all be able to agree that gang members -- like the one who murdered Jamiel Shaw -- do NOT deserve "sanctuary city" protection.
