Politicians, Media Suddenly Silent On Sanctuary City LA

By Daniel Guss
@TheGussReport on Twitter - We are 18 months from election day 2024 with a deafening silence from local politicians and media who spent years grandstanding about how California and the county and city of Los Angeles are sanctuary enclaves.
(Photo: Protestors at a 2017 rally where organizers called for a stop to deportations and to establish Los Angeles as a sanctuary city.  Photo: Ronen Tivony/NurPhoto via Getty Images via Vox.com)
Like their blue comrades in places like San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, New York, Boston, DC and Chicago, they finally got to be the cool kids in school, free to defy federal laws while grubbing for federal dollars to satisfy their political hard-ons for higher office and irrationally overpaid and unlikely employment for their families.
You're laughing or nodding because you know in your soul that this is true.
Oh, but the bills eventually come due.  Like Title 42, which ends at midnight tomorrow and even Joe Biden predicting "chaos."

In Thick Of Bribery Scheme, Mark Ridley-Thomas Gave This Richly Ironic Advice

By Daniel Guss

@TheGussReport on Twitter - An amusing part of watching wonky and tedious government meetings is when agitating gadflies such as Zuma Dogg, Wayne Spindler and the late John Walsh make, and sometimes sing, obnoxious public comments that get under the skin of tightly wrapped politicians.

For example, there's the nugget from 2018 that we're going to revisit today, when then-LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was convicted last week on seven federal corruption counts, interrupted Spindler's button-pushing for, what he described as, a "point of personal privilege."

If only Ridley-Thomas had followed his own advice.

If only all politicians did.

"Mike Bonin's Honesty and Intellectual Dishonesty" by Daniel Guss

@TheGussReport - On Wednesday, embattled LA City Councilmember Mike Bonin said he would not run for a third and final term on LA City Council, the City's legislative body, citing life-long mental health issues.

Mike Bonin

But we think something else might be at-play here, as evidenced by his boasting of endorsements from LA County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Holly Mitchell, Congressman Ted Lieu and the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters.

I explain what that other factors are in my new Substack.

LA Must Protect Itself From Itself

By Daniel Guss

@TheGussReport - It's 2022 and Los Angeles has a narrow, approaching window to start fixing its copious political challenges and corruption.

Having watched a few decades of local elections, here is what LA needs to do to save itself from itself.

  1. Stop electing candidates based on their last name, skin tone and if they sound like an echo chamber of each other and the media.

  2. Take everything the Los Angeles Times says or endorses with a grain of salt…and tequila. Stop relying on its endorsements since it almost entirely serves as a protective public relations unit for liberal and left politicians and their ideas to the total lack of balance of other sides, opinions and candidates. It is worth noting that the Times has endorsed, or even repeatedly endorsed, virtually every candidate currently or recently facing recall.

  3. Start electing people from outside of the local political ecosystem. Encourage and elect those who have built something significant in the private sector. People who know what it’s like to make payroll in the face of illogical, oppressive and un-scientific government mandates. Think engineers, teachers (not school board members), healthcare professionals, private sector attorneys and the like. Elect reluctant politicians, not career ones.

Let’s repeat that: elect reluctant politicians, not career ones.

***

All the commotion so far about who is running for Mayor of LA and other offices is just that: chatter. It means nothing until February 7, 2022, when the candidate filing window opens to file a Declaration Of Intention to Become a Candidate. That narrow window closes less than a week later, on February 12. That’ll be the entirety of our options. People who fail to file will not make it onto the primary ballot.

Then there’s the race to gather 500 valid signatures by March 9, a rigged process designed to favor monied candidates. Those who submit at least a thousand votes for verification do not have to pay the $300 fee.

Is LA Wave Newspaper "Soulvine Columnist" Betty Pleasant supporting Janice Hahn for Congress?

This being Thursday means its time for more South LA observations from the newly-visual repaired (at least one eye) Soulvine Columnist Betty Pleasant of the historic LA Wave Newspaper. And for those who wonder what African-American candidate Pleasant was endorsing in the 44th Congressional District, we cut and paste this for your review.
The California Supreme Court last week rejected two challenges to the new voting districts drawn by the citizens commission. The justices voted unanimously to reject the two lawsuits filed by Republicans to overturn the new congressional and state Senate boundaries and they chose to remain mum as to why they kept the new boundaries intact. One of the challenged districts was the newly configured 44th Congressional District where Rep. Janice Hahn is handling an empty suit (Assemblyman Isadore Hall) and an empty dress (Congresswoman Luara Richardson) who are seeking to claim that office as a “Black seat.” Hahn has already obtained the endorsement of the relevant Los Angeles city officials and now she’s picked up the support of the leaders of Long Beach, South Gate and Carson, as well as the support of more labor unions that you can shake a stick at. Oh, and the Soulvine, as well.

Los Angeles Politics for Tuesday

Lots of fun stuff in the race to succeed now Congresswoman Janice Hahn in her vacated CD15 seat. The latest is an unconfirmed report posted by one of our readers that the firefighters union executive board split 3-3 on an endorsement of their President, Pat McOsker, for the Council seat. With the panel deadlocked, McOsker claimed the right the cast the deciding vote. If true, this would be a shocking display of hubris by a wannabe elected official.

Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Wednesday

The Wisconsin Republican Party tried to play dirty by running 6 fake candidates in the Dem state primary as "Democrats". All 6 fake candidates had their asses handed to them by the voters yesterday. The general election that will decide if 6 Republican state senators will be recalled and replaced will be held in August. Dems need 3 seats to take back control of the Wisconsin Senate. Governor Scott Walker (R), who led the union busting charge in the state is expected to face a recall as soon as he becomes eligible next year.

Speaking of having your ass handed to you, right wing extremist Craig Huey never had a chance, real or imagined. Even after spending over $800,000 of his own money, Huey was soundly defeated by the LA City Councilwoman in yesterday's special election. Janice Hahn now will represent CA36, replacing Jane Harmon who resigned from office earlier this year.
UPDATE: Hahn's victory is the 200th consecutive House race in which Republicans have failed to pick up a seat in California.

Joseph Mailander-Pre Smear Merchant

And just speaking of an ass; Pity poor Joseph Mailander!  For weeks, he's been on an obsessive and fruitless quest to expose some sort of "organized conspiracy" in Sunland-Tujunga! He's harassed (some say stalked) local residents with phone calls and endless e-mails (even after many have firmly asked him to stop). He's rounded up a ridiculous group of highly questionable sources (including 2 convicted felons, and a squatter) that he has touted as "community leaders". And just yesterday he posts on his blog a letter from a local character named Terre Ashmore, who claims she was harassed and assaulted by attendees at a recent neighborhood council executive board meeting. The problem with Ms. Ashmore's story? Attendees at the meeting are stunned, and say that what she claims happened, never happened, not even close.  Keep up that ace reporting Joseph Mailander, you are making Glenn Beck so proud. Ciao!

Zuma Dogg Robocalls Against Janice Hahn

Is Janice Hahn trying to distance herself from Mayor Villaraigosa and the City Council?

Like him or not, Zuma Dogg is almost always right and ahead of the game.  LA's fighter of fraud, waste and abuse is robo-calling against Janice Hahn's campaign for Congress.

A Democrat Who Will Not Vote for Janice Hahn

By Alexandra Datig
It goes against my conscience and it is not in the best interest of our youth to elect Janice Hahn for Congress.  The people should not vote for someone who is riding on the message of breaking federal law to get elected to a federal post!

I have been acquainted with Janice Hahn since 2002.  I have campaigned for her brother James Hahn for Mayor of Los Angeles and always held her in high esteem.  But last year I learned something about Janice Hahn that has made me not want to support her in her effort to run for the 36th Congressional District.

In 2010, I launched my campaign to defeat Proposition 19, the measure that attempted to legalize marijuana for recreational use in the State of California.  This measure, had it won, would have made marijuana legal for taxable sale and consumption under state law ONLY, not federal law.  I remember visiting Janice Hahn in Pasadena at a fundraiser for her race for lieutenant governor and asking her about her position on Proposition 19. I explained to her that when I was a teenager at the age of 16, I was given marijuana and was raped. After telling her my story, Hahn still did not enthusiastically oppose Prop. 19. and danced around every question I had.  I found this not only hurtful, but also odd since the lieutenant governor of the state of California also sits on the Board of Regents making decisions in the best interest for students.  Drug legalization is not in the best interest of students.

Friday Free for All

California's landmark Parent Trigger Law, which allows students' parents to take control of failing schools, is currently before the State Board of Education which is crafting policies and regulations around the laws.  School teachers and administrators, of course no fan of the law, are seeking to direct how those rules are imposed.  Parent activists who worked to get the law passed, including Lydia Grant of Sunland-Tujunga, have filed an ethics complaint against board member Patricia Rucker, who is also a paid lobbyist for the California Teachers Association.  The parents are saying that Rucker's participation represents a conflict of interest and she should recuse herself from proceedings on the Parent Trigger Law.  Joining the parents is retired State Senator Gloria Romero, who authored the law, in calling on Rucker to step away.

Friday Free for All

A former aide to Janice Hahn is losing his cushy airport job after finding himself in an Anthony Weiner-like sexting scandal. Mike Molina, who had been serving as Deputy Executive Director of Los Angeles World Airports, quit when confronted by Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey over the allegations. Molina claims he is innocent but did admit to Lindsey that he used "bad judgment." Don't worry about Molina being homeless though, insiders are telling the Sister City that the skids are allegedly being greased for Molina to get a job with a major supporter of Hahn's.

Friday Free for All

You may remember a few years ago when we reported on KTTV reports that Councilwoman Janice Hahn funded active gang members with funds that were meant for gang suppression.  Now that Hahn is running for Congress, her opponents want you to remember that.

Betty Pleasant is having another cow about Councilman Bernard Parks. You may remember that Betty is a "scribe" for a local paper that makes money by selling legally required ads to business. Betty is upset that business people in the Valley are helping Parks pay off his campaign debt.  That might be because Parks is one of a few members who show some sympathy to business.

Citizen panels will work to draw the lines for School Board, City Council and County Supervisor districts but in the end the electeds will still have the final say.

Friday Free for All

Janice Hahn was able to bamboozle her Congressional primary opponent Debra Bowen with a challenge to sign a campaign pledge but could not do the same with her general election challenger, Craig Huey.  From Huey: Buzz off.

Here's another well meaning government program gone wrong. A federal program gives consumers who purchase the all green Chevy Volt a $7,500 credit.  However the popularity of the vehicle has led to shortages causing some dealers to raise the price up on the vehicle $20,000 or more.  Others are selling the cars as used and snaking the credit for themselves, something the Feds can't do anything about.

Dennis Zine is planing a Fourth of July extravaganza.
