This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.
Looks like former LAPD Chief William Bratton got out of town just in time - an audit showing under his watch the LAPD mismanaged millions of dollars in purchasing and contracting. The violations include contracts being issued without going out for competitive bidding and purchases lacking receipts. The Daily News reports the fraud, waste and abuse potentially represents millions of taxpayer dollars. The audit was completed last summer however the details were held until after Bratton's exit.
Legendary pro-marijuana activist-attorney Bruce Margolin thinks that elected officials concerns about the practicality and expense of enforcing regulations on medical marijuana lead to an eventual mood to legalize the drug. In an op-ed piece in the Daily News Margolin, a local West Hollywood based attorney and real estate investor who literally wrote the book on marijuana laws, says beleagured state and local government could "benefit from the tax dollars brought in by above-board cannabis shops paying millions in sales tax, plus payroll and other taxes." Legal pot just might coming sooner than expected - activitsts are prepping a measure for the November 2010 ballot.
Good recap on the CD2 elections by Suzanne Lauer at the Village to Village Blog. Despite the fact that a well past his prime, former Mayoral candidate turned also ran blogger (no not that one, nor that one, yes THAT ONE) was urging people not to vote, more people turned out to vote, during the holidays and in awful weather for the run-off than during the primary. Lauer sees a positive and nascent movement locally against apathy that might have been further stoked by the hybrid grass roots victory of Paul Krekorian. Let's hope she turns out to be right!
Oh. There's an election in CD2 today. If you happen to see any voter intimidation or election irregularaties call (213) 978-0444.
Former CD5 candidate Adeena Bleich has a good commentary on the CD2 election in the Daily News. Bleich is yet the latest leader to condemn Chris Essel's controversial mailer using holocaust imagery to attack Paul Krekorian. Bleich writes "I know what anti-Semitism and sexism look like first hand, and if one is going to attack another person as such they'd better have a very good reason, with real evidence and solid proof to back it up. Wanting to win a campaign is not a good enough reason."
In all the nonsense going around town whether it's CD2, Trutanich or Villaraigosa off at the hooker I mean climate conference in Denmark there is one good thing we can always count on: The Los Angeles Fire Department and Brian Humphrey. An excellent tip from Brian at the LAFD blog for those of you who may be affected by this current storm: stay tuned to your radio for news and information, primarily KNX 1070 which features regular reports from the LAFD.
The folks at the Foothills Forum site have done an excellent job, using data from the City Clerk's office integrated with Google Maps to show how the candidates performed across CD2 yesterday.
Judging from the per precinct performance Essel captured most of Studio City and Sherman Oaks and split Sunland-Tujunga with Krekorian. Krekorian, as expected, captured the heart of the district in North Hollywood, Valley Glen, Valley Village, etc.
Most remarkable to this old, dead Republican Mayor is how well Essel performed in Sunland-Tujunga.
Galatzan took three precincts in Sherman Oaks, and one in her own Studio City but couldn't expand north of Magnolia Boulevard. Similiarly Krekorian did not do well in Studio City, something his team will need to address for the run-off.
Mary Benson was able to take two precincts in Sunland-Tujunga and one (preumably her own) in Sun Valley. Pete Sanchez as expected performed well in his native Valley Village capturing two precints there.
TAMAR GALATZAN 1,871 12.94 (3) JOZEF "JOE" THOMAS ESSAVI 306 2.12 (9) ** CHRISTINE ESSEL 4,104 28.39 (2) MICHAEL MC CUE 339 2.35 (8) PETE SANCHEZ 699 4.84 (5) DAVID "ZUMA DOGG" SALTSBURG 410 2.84 (7) FRANK SHEFTEL 441 3.05 (6) ** PAUL KREKORIAN 4,929 34.10 (1) MARY BENSON 1,198 8.29 (4) AUGUSTO BISANI 158 1.09 (10)
** denotes runoff candidates.
We now return you to your regular programming.
** The "Westside White Guy" states this in his rant about the CD 2 results. "The so-called community candidates? Couldn't break three figures". Hmmm., how many many numbers/figures are in Mary Benson's vote total?? 1-1-9-8 = four numbers/figures. Maybe his eyes are still adjusting after viewing "these"??
One of our readers says that the medical marijuana community is coming out strong for candidate Frank Sheftel. We've found at least some evidence of that at 420 Magazine where a commenter says the following:
"What really catches my fancy is that Frank Sheftel has been a strong voice for services for the valley that benefit the people who live there AND he’s nbeen an educated advocate on the medical marijuana issues that LA County has faced for the past several years. We need someone who has this experience and viewpoint on the City Council. Because heck, as far as I can see, the City Council is slowly but surely eroding and crushing all the rights voters have endorsed to have safe access to medical marijuana dispensaries."
No stems or seeds!
I predict that Sheftel will be very strong in Valley Village and should hit 4th - 6th place depending how the rest of the chips fall.
Hundreds of police officers and federal law enforcement agents launched a major assault on the Avenues gang this morning, hoping to deal a blow to an elusive gang responsible for some of Los Angeles' most notorious street crime.
Under the cover of darkness around 3 a.m., roughly 1,200 heavily-armed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and several other agencies dispersed from a command post near the LAPD’s training academy in Elysian Park.
Warrants in hand, they descended on dozens of homes in search of 53 alleged members or associates of the Avenues gang wanted on an array of federal charges related to the gang's extensive drug dealing, unsolved murders and other crimes.
With 43 suspects already in custody on unrelated charges, the operation aimed to bring new charges against 88 Avenues members or associates, a significant share of a gang that is believed to have about 400 members.
Some suspects were sought elsewhere in the city, but the sweep focused on Glassell Park and other neighborhoods in the northeastern reaches of Los Angeles -- the center of Avenues territory since the gang first surfaced in the 1950s.
The ambush murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Juan Abel Escalante, brought renew scrutiny on the Avenues Gang who also had been convicted of hate crimes, in targeting blacks within Highland Park for attacks as a part of a campaign to rid the neighborhood of African Americans.
Rubin reports that the motivation for this morning's raids were made clear during a planning meeting last week.
With the auditorium at LAPD headquarters filled with a few hundred officers, a recording was played of the phone call Escalante’s hysterical wife made to a 911 dispatcher after discovering him in the street. “If anyone has any doubt about the rationale or reason behind this operation, it was this,” a detective said.
The Department of Water and Power's proposed 85-mile-long Green Path North transmission line has faced fierce opposition from more than a dozen community and environmental groups, creating a political chink in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's efforts to cast himself as the leader of the "cleanest, greenest big city in America."
Once again, the Oak Glen based "Wildlands Conservancy" stands fast in preserving open space from encroachment for dubious efforts.
The city plans to spend as much as $1.8 million on the election. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two candidates will face a runoff election Dec. 8. The winner will finish Greuel’s term, which ends in June 2011.
Officials at the Los Angeles city clerk’s office plan to begin posting results by 8:30 p.m. here. The first tallies will be from vote-by-mail ballots. As of Monday afternoon, the clerk’s office had received just 7,386 ballots by mail – a fraction of the 124,955 voters who live in the 2nd Council District.
No need to remind you what fellow Westside native they are endorsing in this election.
The mayor's former deputy chief of staff Dan Grunfeld stepped down from his post Friday. Today, the law firm of Kaye Scholer announced that Grunfeld, 49, will work in its Los Angeles office representing clients in such fields as green technology, alternative energy and compliance with environmental laws.
** Financial times must be bad when the Los Angeles Unified School District and its bus drivers have to agree on taking six furlough days.
** Los Angeles City Board of Harbor Commissioners "are considering a new plan for improving the San Pedro port, including revitalizing the once-thriving Port O'Call village shopping and dining area".
The Los Angeles County district attorney's office has searched two homes in a probe of whether Democratic state Sen. Roderick Wright lives in the district he represents, officials confirmed today.
David Demerjian, who heads the DA's Public Integrity Division, told The Times that investigators searched two residences early Wednesday morning but he would not divulge exact addresses. One of the homes was in Wright's 25th District and the other was in the neighboring 26th District.
Interesting Financial Data from "Californians for Krekorian in 2010"
"I was hoping to speak from here more in the future"
CD 2 City Council Candidate Chris Essel, with John Shallman's "talking points" next to her, gave it her best shot in the KPCC "Air Talk" CD 2 Special Election Debate with the "Big Three Candidates", moderated by host Larry Mantle.
Essel for the most part, was the decisively lesser candidate in this three-way exchange. But she did awkwardly hit Paul Krekorian with the accusation that Krekorian had made payments to Campaign Consultant Eric Hacopian from his 2010 Assembly Campaign Fund, and guess what?? He did.
The payments listed below were made to Hacopian between January 1, 2009 and September 16, 2009 from the "Californians for Krekorian in 2010" account on file with the Secretary of State. One wonders if these are the debt payments Krekorian alluded to in the debate?? Yeah right!!
In retrospect, it is no wonder that Krekorian was befuddle and halting in responding to Essel's "desperation round house punch", attacking his use of campaign funds.
But this disclosure coming on the back of the "$15,000 Televised Appreciation Spot" courtesy of fellow Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes-Handel, makes you wonder if Krekorian and Hacopian are playing "games" with campaign finance laws.
** One can review Krekorian's 460 forms and try to find where the word "loan" is use in describing the above payments.
KPCC "Air Talk with Larry Mantle" to Moderate Debate with the "Big Three" in CD 2 Special Election
KPCC 89.3 FM "Air Talk" Host Larry Mantle will moderate a debate with the "Big Three", Chris Essel, Paul Krekorian, and Tamar Galatzan at 10:30 AM, as one day remains before tomorrow's Special CD 2 Council Election.
This may be worth a listen.
Your thoughts..........
** Paul Krekorian: "I have said no more times than yes to Organize Labor in my time in Sacramento". Link here to view his voting record regarding labor issues. Hint, alot of "yes" votes.
** Chris Essel gets hit on AB 1818 support during her time at Central City Association.
** Paul Krekorian: "Proud of his association with Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes-Handel." Thankful for Fuentes "television tribute to him".
** Tamar Galatzan defends the use of LAUSD funds for her "timely questionaire".
** Chris Essel attacks Krekorian and Galatzan on payments to consultants from other funds. Krekorian seem befuddle when responding to Essel's charge that he was paying Consultant Eric Hacopian from his Assembly funds. ** Link here to "Cal Access" data for expendtures from "Californians for Krekorian in 2010"
** Now I know what a "empty vessel" sounds like on the radio. Kevin James would of had to invoke the "Talk Radio Mercy Rule" if she dare appear on his program.
Several Studio City NC members, neighborhood activists endorse Paul K
A group identified as Concerned Citizens of Studio City is expressing support for Paul Krekorian, adapting language from a recent Valley Glen group’s endorsement. The undersigned include ten members of the Studio City Neighborhood Council. Click here for the full statement.
Will Kevin James’ Endorsement of Benson Have Impact? Paul Hatfield - Village to Village Blog Agree with Paul that James' endorsement came too late and was riddled with apologies as if Kevin really wanted to endorse someone else. Disagree with most of the rest of Paul's analysis.
Haley Green is has been paid $2,000 to date for consulting work by the then Galatzan. Previously Green was on the payroll of Villaraigosa's Partnership for Better Schools, the Mayor's political committee that helped to elect Galatzan to the School Board with a $2 million boost.
Galatzan's day to day aide Devin Orisri is a former employee of the Mayor's Partnership for Better schools. Her Policy Director Pamela Burga is another former employee of the Mayor.
Though Galatzan and others claim she and the Mayor have had a parting of ways - primarily pointing to a vote against benefits for part time LAUSD cafeteria workers - Galatzan has supported nearly every other initiative of the Mayor including his takeover of select local schools as well as plans to offer a significant number of LAUSD campuses to private operators. As a veteran campaign consultant recently told me "There is no falling out. Tamar's campaign is being advised and run by loyalists to Villaraigosa."

I am adding my name to the Mary Benson endorsements because she is the kind of non-political, no nonsense individual that we desperately need in the City Council. Her experience in several Neighborhood Councils for years with many volunteer hours of research into City procedures, environmental concerns and remedies as well as City Planning issues and improvements makes her much more qualified to serve CD2 than any of the 'polished' politicians with professional big bucks backing. Her interest has been to serve the community not play political musical chairs.

You're the BEST candidate for CD-2. You know that one of the TOP priorities for all our CD-2 communities is LAND USE and making sure that the 11933 Magnolia Blvd. SB1818 project is NEVER approved.
We need a GRASS ROOTS CANDIDATE that is ETHICAL, SMART, KNOWLEDGABLE and not owned by special interests like the big three money candidates in this race. I only wish I could give more.

Mary Benson is a citizen like us who for many, many years has been a driving force keeping our community in one piece and heading in a direction that the citizenry relish. As a great and often-GENIUS leader with unparalleled knowledge of the workings of government, she's chosen to intentionally stay behind the scenes on many occasions, in an effort to assign causes to others, guiding and supporting them to get more people involved and making us stronger as a group. I know this, because I was one of them, working with her and alongside of her on the Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council and during my tenure as President of the La Tuna Canyon Community Association, but the drawback is that because of her humble and wise leadership, her name may not be as prominent as other candidates and most voters make their choices as if an election is a popularity contest. Right now, we have 15 city council members and only 2 appear to be working for the people rather than their own careers or at the behest of big money interests, and the corruptible things I've seen and videotaped at City Council meetings and hearings sickens me to my core, but Mary Benson will definitely be a refreshing 3rd councilperson in support of the citizens that she will serve, and will lend some sanity to the way that the City Council goes about its business! A vote for Mary Benson for CD2 is a vote for OURSELVES!

"I strongly support Mary Benson for City Council. The entire city would benefit from the election of Mary Benson to the City Council for District 2. I've known Mary Benson for over a decade. She's level-headed; she cares deeply about the quality of life for LA. and its citizens; and she's got integrity, integrity, integrity. The last thing this city needs is another career politician jumping from one office to the next, or politicians who rent apartments in an area to qualify for the ballot. Mary Benson has lived in Council District 2 forever. She's running for office not because she wants a career in politics, but because she cares about her city, which is our city. If you want someone honest, dedicated and qualified on the City Council, someone who will fight for the public interest instead of special interests, Mary Benson is your candidate."

MARY BENSON is our only hope, and, i firmly believe, our last hope for our horse communities in the valley. I have lived in Shadow HIlls since 1973/74. Depending on who was representing us on the council, we have either lost so much in our animal keeping areas or been able to hold on to the trails, scenic hwys, the feel of horse country.....this is darn close to our LAST HURRAH and we can't afford a "mistake" on the city council!!
I haven't been able to ride for 13 years now. So when I have the time to drive through our wonderful community and see the lack of respect for our rural atmosphere (paved streets with no side trails along the streets, easements and trail accesses closed off) I am very saddened and frustrated that I can no longer ride and "chat" with the new property owners in our area so they can see how friendly and willing our equestrians are to communicate what the area means to us with critters.....that's part of riding the trails, too! From the looks of our community now, I wonder how many riders are taking the time to do that?
Please vote for Mary.....she will take the time to research every need and project. She truly loves this area and wants what is best for it! And that includes the other parts of the SFV which used to be rich farm land until the greedy politicians sold out to the developers/contractors!

Mary Benson is who everyone in CD2 needs as their council member. She is not a politician, yet she know the in's and out's of politics. Mary has lived in CD2 all her life and has worked hard for our community. She has been an activist and has accomplished so much, for our community and city, too much to list. A few are, the Tujunga watershed, Neighborhood Councils, Rim of the Valley Trail, multipurpose trails, the historical site of Stonehurst and many, many more important endeavors for CD2. Vote for Mary, she will represent, you and me, in supporting our community.

I personally endorse Mary Benson for Council District 2. Mary has been a longtime friend to our community and will represent the people of this district. Ms. Benson serves on, and/or is president of several boards and non-profits as a dedicated citizen volunteer, and is a long time resident in CD2 (her home town), and she is NOT a Politician.
Ms. Benson will provide critical leadership now sadly lacking on council (and at the Mayor’s office), as Mary is not beholden to big money donors nor entrenched special interests who are always opposed to communities demands, developers who's project(s) preclude good planning, always at the expense of public health, recreation, watershed and the environment's due consideration. I predict Ms. Benson will bring fresh ideas and beneficial changes for the people that will not be detrimental to doing good business, with reasonable, though long overdue policy and process changes, and deep cultural, and priority changes throughout our city departments.

After careful thought and mustering as much awareness as I can, I have decided to publicize my candidate support... Who of all these candidates has so much as begun to do for this community that which Mary Benson has done for years? Who? Who was here in person working tirelessly on behalf of our community during the Station Fire? Who has lived her whole life here amongst us? Who has fought so consistently for trails, for the Rim of the Valley, for historical status for Stonehurst, for the equestrian community, for the watershed? Who has come to all those meetings in Sunland Tujunga for all those years? Who has worked to preserve our open space and rural lifestyle? Who helped to write the grant for the 4 3/4 acres on Oro Vista? Who fought to stop Home Depot? Who is fighting to save the Verdugo Hills Golf Course? Mary Benson that's who!

The first time I saw Mary Benson she was on a committee trying to improve relations between LA Rec. and Parks and the horse community demanding, not unreasonably, some trail maintenance. This was about 15 years ago and I actually turned to Marc after listening to Mary and said "Wow". I remember that meeting because Mary's brain was so sharp and so focused on getting the task at hand done. Unlike most of our City Council and candidate professional politicians who will "fit in", I believe absolutely that Mary Benson will focus on problems plaguing CD2 and its people, and as 15 years ago, do what it takes to make things right for CD2 and its people. I am the daughter of an actor and the wife of a retired SAG stunt pilot. I have watched the struggle in LA as various City Councils give lip service to helping the industry while adding ever more fees, taxes. permits and restrictions connected with filming. We even have the California Film Council whose job it is to encourage filming in the State. They have not been able to break the stranglehold on movie money that the City demands and so our movies are leaving. Mary Benson is not a professional politician looking for another fat check, but she is a professional thinker and doer and achiever whose name is well known in equestrian circles because she has always been our neighbor and, therefore, our defender. Mary is not a polished politician who knows how to go with the flow, make the right speeches to look good and then follow whatever is the candidate’s personal agenda. Nope, Mary is someone who will kick up enough dust in City Council that she will be heard, maybe not liked very much, but heard and supported when she is right because the press covers those who dare to make a fuss in the best interests of the City. Mary is also no fool. She knows how much most horse people appreciate her. She also knows the very large percentage of people who earn or earned their livings in the motion picture business and she is one person who truly will be responsible and responsive to the needs of her constituents. It goes without saying and personally delights me to know that Mary Benson will interfere with non-productive and/or inappropriate development, not only in the horse communities, but also in Studio City that has been plagued by high rise profiteers for the last 10 or so years. I'm going to pray to the grass roots god and then vote for Mary Benson. I truly believe if we stick together she has a chance to beat the pros and wouldn't it be dandy to have REAL representation at City Hall??!!!!
