Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Tuesday

Cleaning up the CD2 Snow Job

UPDATE: Griffith Park Wayist blog endorses Paul Krekorian for CD2. That pretty much means all of the major political bloggers in LA that have endorsed, have rejected Chris Essel.

And the Village to Village Blog comes about as close as one can without endorsing to endorse Krekorian.

---

Big battle in City Hall over ever getting a reimbursement for the expenses the City incurred during Michael Jackson's gala funeral at the Staples Center. Council Members tend to concur with Hamburger Jan Perry that it will difficult to get payment from the owners of Staples and the producer of the funeral, AEG as long as City Attorney Carmen Trutanich continues to hold the threat of criminal prosecution over the matter. As AEG President Tim Liewickie has said its time for Trutanich to put up or shut up.

Oh. There's an election in CD2 today. If you happen to see any voter intimidation or election irregularaties call (213) 978-0444.

Former CD5 candidate Adeena Bleich has a good commentary on the CD2 election in the Daily News. Bleich is yet the latest leader to condemn Chris Essel's controversial mailer using holocaust imagery to attack Paul Krekorian. Bleich writes "I know what anti-Semitism and sexism look like first hand, and if one is going to attack another person as such they'd better have a very good reason, with real evidence and solid proof to back it up. Wanting to win a campaign is not a good enough reason."

For some reason the Los Angeles Times is continually posting their endorsement of Chris Essel. They have a lot of stake in her victory.

In all the nonsense going around town whether it's CD2, Trutanich or Villaraigosa off at the hooker I mean climate conference in Denmark there is one good thing we can always count on: The Los Angeles Fire Department and Brian Humphrey. An excellent tip from Brian at the LAFD blog for those of you who may be affected by this current storm: stay tuned to your radio for news and information, primarily KNX 1070 which features regular reports from the LAFD.

If Paul wins, he can become a hero by drawing a line in the sand with his fellow Council Members. I know that he values his negotiating skills, but there is little time to negotiate change regarding the direction of the city. We are bleeding cash reserves at a rate of a million dollars each day. We are going down.

The Council needs an intervention session and Paul has the skills to handle the challenge.

Um. When did Assistant to Speaker Bass, bankrupter of California, Paul Krekorian become our final hope for fiscal responsibility?

You don't need Essel to lose to see he-who-shall-not-be-named go ballistic; it is his static situation.

I'd rather see Higby go ballistic; now that would be a feat to observe.

Maybe Hiby and the owner of this blog, Hacopian, can give a "Welcome Back Paul" party in Sacramento for their loser candidate.

Paul only has to hold onto his existing base and only capture 20% of those who didn't vote for him last time. That's less than half of the people who voted for Mary Benson, Tamar and Pete Sanchez all of whom have been actively campaigning got.

If Paul kept up his GOTV operation and put the bulk of his money into AV as he did last time, he wins.

My observation on the CD-2 election is as follows.. When you look at who is endorsing the candidates, Essel has way more politician wannabes on her team. People that ran for Mayor, City Council, City Attorney, etc. SO. The question is why? Could it be these wannabe politicians see Essel as a meal ticket? Did she cut a bunch of deals? Promises? Employment, positive treatment? Contracts & goodies? Or in the case of one guy, sandwiches, a used mattress & shaving cream? I'm more than a little suspicious.

Paul Krekorian has continuously pledge to stand in between developers and the community of Sunland Tujunga. Chris Essel has continued her silence regarding big development in Sunland Tujunga.

Sometimes, being a career politician is an advantage to the community. Paul's reversals on some positions indicates he knows which way the political winds are blowing, and like a politician, he's adjusting accordingly. Essel cannot--she is not running to shut out development, but to push development through. She can't say anything that could come back to haunt her--so she says nothing.

NoHo is another story. Development and even density makes sense in NoHo, a place with little geographical character. Krekorian has not pledged anything regarding development to NoHo, and that's the sensible position. Essel couldn't even identify a single school in NoHo early in the campaign.

Of all the councilmembers I've watched over the past decade, Wendy Greuel was probably the most constantly disingenuous. Whenever she stepped outside her district (which was quite often), she complained about her own constituents. She cut a few deals in the interest of the community but largely she was there to ride Villaraigosa's coattails, and Villaraigosa has absolutely no passion for the legacy of any non-Latino neighborhood in the City (nor does Garcetti, for that matter). If a developer wanted to plunk a fifty-story condo in , and they gave either of these two sluts $100,000 through various friends and relatives, that is what Villaraigosa/Greuel/Garcetti would stand for.

Paul Krekorian will stand up to the neighborhood legacy-trashing development machine. Chris Essel will not. Shallman, the dirtiest man in LA politics, is trying to win this election the way he usually wins elections: by squeaking through by obscuring the issues rather than by facing them directly.

Is it any wonder why Essel is supported by Sheftel, Hernandez, and Jennerjahn? Plain and simple: they're all pro-free market and therefore pro any development, regardless of how it affects the present community. With no training as economists, they haven't the intellectual acumen to understand that a City's zoning plan is actually the execution of the will of private property owners.

The facile free-market crooners who back Essel think that the will of out-of-town developers is just as legitimate in a community as the will of property owners in the community itself. Most everyone with actual economic training, however, knows that the will of the community is the best expression of free market economics of all.

Smart Republicans naturally invest the most hope for local rule and community self-government. But these three Essel endorsements think that "free market" means ignoring local private property owners if any farflung developer may also have a stake in a community in which they don't reside.

In this way, the less-gifted Republicans conflate and confuse the mechanics of the stock market (in which people can buy the same commodity from anywhere) with the mechanics of real estate (in which your property value is determined by your community first and foremost).

I'm for Krekorian, who also understands local rule. Like Wendy Greuel, Chris Essel only has disdain for the very people she would represent on City Council.

Wendy was not the only one badmouthing her own constituents. That is a specialty of both Pat Davenport and Dale Thrush.

Amazingly, Pat is so tone-deaf to the community that she does not hesitate to trash neighbors while talking to other neighbors. That was my first heads-up that something was seriously wrong with Ms. D.

Her M.O.: She sidles up to you with a little hug, tells you how smart you are (and therefore how different you are than other S-T residents) and gives you an earful about the stupidity of Sunland-Tujunga residents, all the while seemingly unaware that the particular Sunland-Tujunga resident she is talking to at the moment might take offense!

When she played the above scenario with me, she was trashing the folks organizing the No Home Depot campaign. People I knew, and some were both neighbors and friends. And yet Pat did not realize that spouting off her mouth this way was an offensive and stupid thing to do. Her position as a CD2 staffer made it unethical, too, IMHO.

Arrogance or cluelessness? both?

PS -- no fear that Pat or Dale can identify me from this little story. Not when she's done it to so many people.

Nuch vs. AEG. Who is going to win that one? The joke of it is that Jan Perry is doing everything she possibly can to create public opinion pressure on Nuch to make him drop the case so that AEG can "make a contribution."
Bullshit. Perry knows that when the City Attorney goes public with the investigation, she's going to look even more stupid than she does now.
Any hope Perry ever had of running for mayor will vanish when she is seen to be the stupid puppet of special interests that she is.
