This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

46% Garcetti, 46% Greuel, SurveyUSA finds in its latest KABC-TV pre-election tracking poll on the race for Mayor of Los Angeles. The sea-saw contest had Garcetti leading by 9 points 1 month ago, and Greuel leading by 3 points 2 weeks ago. But today, 05/10/13, the candidates are exactly even, with 8% of likely voters still undecided.Greuel and Garcetti are within 2 points of each other in every age group. Men tip slightly to Garcetti. Women tip slightly to Greuel. Whites and Latinos slightly favor Garcetti. African Americans by 2:1, and Asian Americans ever-so-slightly, favor Greuel. Garcetti leads among Republicans. Greuel leads among Democrats and Independents. Wealthier and well-educated voters favor Garcetti. Less affluent and less educated voters favor Greuel.
In the contest for City Attorney, incumbent Carmen Trutanich appears to have made inroads against challenger Mike Feuer. Feuer had led by 18 points in March, then led by 12, then led by 10, and today leads by just 6 points. Trutanich is making up ground among conservatives and among younger voters (..... and don't count out Latino support for Nuch).

Just when you thought you’d had heard the last about Mike Feuer’s ethics scandal, Mike Feuer gives the story new legs by admitting, in writing, that he broke the city’s campaign finance law. But Feuer only made that admission after he tricked the city into giving him another $350,000 of our tax money to fund his campaign.
Here’s the latest in this sad saga of Mike Feuer’s ethics scandal: During the primary election, Feuer promised the city he would not spend more than $1,259,000 (the so-called spending cap) on his campaign (Holding a Shallman Consulted Campaign to a spending cap, is like rationing Mayor Villar's access to "Telebimbos"). On April 11, Mike Feuer signed a document saying he spent $1,267,155 – or about $8,000 more than the spending cap. So, Feuer broke the law.
Now here’s the really sleazy part: On April 2 and April 4, Feuer obtained an additional $350,000 in city subsidies for his campaign from the city. On April 11, after obtaining the money, Feuer informed the city – under pain of committing perjury – that his funding exceeded the cap and that he broke the law.
It stands to reason that if Feuer had informed the city Ethics Commission that he violated the law before asking for the $350,000 the commission would not have released the money to him. The law is clear: you break the spending cap, you don’t get the city money. The city does NOT reward law-breakers. At least that’s the way it's supposed to work.
When Mike Feuer saw this problem (how could he acknowledge violating the cap and still get the $350,000?), he resolved it this way: he’d get the money first – then he’d acknowledge violating the law. And that’s exactly what he did.

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel's campaign organization has suspended her TV advertising two weeks before the election, a move that reflects her continuing struggle to raise enough money to compete head-to-head on the airwaves with her rival, Eric Garcetti.
Greuel’s cancellation of ad time reserved for Tuesday and Wednesday does not entirely remove her presence from local TV stations. Working Californians to Elect Wendy Greuel, an independent committee controlled by leaders of a union for Department of Water and Power workers, is still running a spot showing former President Bill Clinton talking up her candidacy.
But the cancellation, confirmed by multiple sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, reflects the challenges that Greuel faces in the run-up to the May 21 election as a consequence of raising less money than Garcetti, but spending at a faster pace.
Wendy Greuel is a decent woman; a feather dancer of sorts who always makes sure every part of her being is well-concealed. In a phrase, she is a butt-coverer who never takes a risk and so the rich and powerful and smart and caring – I mean those singular individuals of such great important who are at once richpowerfulsmartcaring and any other virtues applicable to the elite – know with certainty Wendy will do what she is told.Eric Garcetti is not like that.
“I think the AFT is sending a loud and clear message that the status quo — ensuring that the worst teachers are impacting students — is still the law of the land,” said political consultant Michael Trujillo, a strong (though unpaid) supporter of Garcetti’s opponent, Wendy Greuel. “And they’re gonna hold Eric Garcetti’s feet to the fire.”

Eric Garcetti was endorsed by the Los Angeles Business Journal, hurray! Until you read their endorsement: "We call on the next mayor to stop, and perhaps even reverse, the city’s union activism that has so marked recent years."
So now it is all making sense, while Wal-Mart and Big Oil are supporting one of Eric Garcetti's IE, the other one has a lot of "polluters" supporting Eric Garcetti now. #isthisprogress?

We think Garcetti is the most likely candidate to take advantage of what the city has to offer, and we expect he will balance his even-keeled nature with an appropriate scale of vision. The tenure of Villaraigosa demonstrated what can happen when a cocktail of massive vision and unbounded personal ambition exceed a leader’s focus and abilities. Garcetti doesn’t dream as big as Villaraigosa (nor does Greuel), and that’s probably a good thing. Garcetti’s vision is more focused and practical that the current mayor’s. We like his recognition of the need to seize on technology in the next four years — hiring a city technology czar is a wise move. His Great Streets program, an effort to improve 20 key corridors, is another good start. We expect more big ideas will develop and that they will complement the focus on nuts and bolts work.

Most of the audience members who spoke with the Weekly afterward gave the nod to Garcetti, especially on style.
"I think his style is mayoral," said Fran Spitzer, of Encino, who said she voted for Greuel in the primary but is now leaning to Garcetti. "He seems like an honest kind of guy. After (Mayor Antonio) Villaraigosa, we really need a change."
Matt Rutta, also of Encino, said he will be voting for Garcetti because he seemed the more practical of the two.
"He was a lot more definitive. He said what he would do about it," Rutta said. "She said what she wanted to happen, but she didn't say how it would happen."

The school’s chief executive said she didn’t object but was disappointed when she later learned that Greuel had used the visit to attack Garcetti as a politician who would not be independent from the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), the union supporting his bid for mayor.
“Camino Nuevo should not be used for any negative campaigning,” Ponce said. “We worked really hard to get where we are, in partnership with a number of elected officials. It was disappointing to have Camino Nuevo used as a backdrop for negative campaigning.”
Ponce said that a $700,000 federal Community Development Block Grant — delivered after a council motion by Garcetti — was critical in the construction of the soccer field.
After opening in October 2010, she said, the field “really revived the community and brought together a whole bunch of stakeholder groups and constituents.”
Ponce said that she and other school officials are not officially supporting anyone in the mayor’s race.
Every city official has backed bad choices that have had deep and painful consequences for Los Angeles. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa acknowledged his bad decisions Tuesday during his last State of the City Address as mayor.A true leader is one who will own up to the mistakes, learn from them, and has the courage to go back and try to make things right, if not at least better.Asking your employees to make larger contributions toward some of their benefits is not a pleasant thing to do, but as president of the city council, Eric Garcetti asked the city’s police and fire employees to do just that, and they did. We know he did not do it alone, or maybe always as quickly or willingly as some would have liked. As council president there were many things he could have done to skirt the issues, but he recognized that we are all in this together and set an example for the rest of the city’s employees to follow. We are impressed that in the run up to the May 21 election, Eric Garcetti has for the most part remained unflappable and less strident than his opponent, a characteristic we believe will bode well for the city of Los Angeles.

TIT FOR TAT, AND THEN SOME — County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas — who is universally referred to in the community as “the only one we have,” (... or SEIU's Tyrone Freeman's "the only politico I bought with excessive dues money") wholeheartedly endorsed Wendy Greuel last week, thus nullifying the nods of the city’s two Black city council members who announced their support for Eric Garcetti. In addition, longtime Los Angeles Valley representatives Rep. Brad Sherman and former Rep. Howard Berman endorsed Greuel’s campaign for mayor Wednesday, blunting whatever effect Republican mayoral loser Kevin James’endorsement of Garetti is expected to have on Valley voters.
The committee is being organized by Brian Van Riper, the consultant who ran Joe Buscaino's San Pedro-area City Council campaign. So far the committee appears to draw from Buscaino's donor base.
"We're just big Eric Garcetti fans doing whatever we can to support him," Van Riper said.
Van Riper said the committee has modest fundraising goals. By midweek, it had reported raising $95,000. Another independent group, Lots of People Who Support Eric Garcetti for Mayor, began raising money in February. That group has reported raising $533,000 to date.

“Gil Cedillo is a proven local leader who knows how to bring people together to get things done,” Brown said in a statement from the campaign.“We need Gil Cedillo’s leadership, strength and passion on the Los Angeles City Council in order to create jobs, increase neighborhood safety, and expand after-school programs that keep our kids safe.”The nod from the governor is Cedillo’s second high-profile endorsement in the past week. L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa backed Cedillo in a City Hall news conference last Friday.
Los Angeles City Controller and Mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel has once again refused to comply with a public records request submitted by Los Cerritos Community Newspaper, it was reported on Tuesday. The requests were made back on January 22 and 23, 2013, from LCCN Publisher/Owner Brian Hews under the California Public Records Act (PRA).In the request, LCCN sought all emails and written correspondence between Greuel and Brian D’Arcy, Head of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #17, political consultant John Shallman, owner of Shallman Communications and consultant to Greuel’s Mayoral campaign, and Greuel for Mayor Campaign Manager Rose Kapolczynski..
GARCETTI TO HOLD IMMIGRATION REFORM PRESS CONFERENCE
Council to Vote Tomorrow on Garcetti Immigrant-Focused Legislation
LOS ANGELES -- Councilmember Eric Garcetti will lead a pressconference at City Hall on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. to lay out his locallegislative agenda to move Los Angeles immigrant residents to thefront of the line when it comes to citizenship and fully participatingin L.A. civic life, which would benefit the entire city and oureconomy.
Garcetti authored legislation to reestablish the city's Office ofImmigrant Affairs and to make it home to the nation's first initiativefocused on helping local immigrants through the new legal resident andcitizenship program announced by President Obama.
"Immigration reform is coming, but any federal program can be dauntingto navigate, particularly for immigrants," Garceti said. "This officewill help L.A. immigrants cut through the red tape so they are at thefront of the line when it comes to President Obama's new pathway tocitizenship. Helping deserving immigrants earn legal status will buildstronger L.A. communities and a stronger L.A. economy."
