This is the city: Los Angeles, California. I work here. I'm an ex-mayor. Los Angeles is a magnet for people from all over the world. Some of them run for public office. Inevitably some of them stray from the golden rule and rule for those that have the gold. That's when I go to work. My name is Yorty. I'm a dead pol.

It reminded me of the first time I saw Antonio. It was 1978 on the UCLA campus, and he was a speaker at a Chicano protest rally at the university. His look was appropriate for the time: Long, wavy hair and mustache that made him look a lot like Geraldo Rivera.“Who’s he?” I remember a striking blonde student asking.“That’s Tony Villar,” someone told her. She smiled and kept looking at him. She didn’t care about Chicano rights, the movement or the cause. She was focused on the messenger. And that’s been Villaraigosa — he added his ex-wife’s name to his when they married — his entire public life. He’s been a messenger and when the message hasn’t registered, he’s been smart enough to change it, the way populists have long done it, regardless of whether it’s the personal biographical narrative or a position on policy. This is the politics Antonio has always understood and practiced — and which few like to talk about. We like to envelop our politics in professional discourse about policy, polls, opinion and it’s-the-economy-stupid-BS. But the politics of charisma that has always defined Villaraigosa and that now so heavily sways America is more visceral. It’s about feel and touch. It’s about how a candidate looks and talks, dresses and walks.

Nick Pacheco How in the hell does the building owner get permits to convert the building to lofts and no one at City Hall or Councilman Huizar protect the mural.... tragic!!! I can't stay quiet on this one!! I love George Yepes' work.... too bad I can't afford it.

Councilman Jose Huizais heading back to Princeton this week to talk about education issues.(no plans to party or visit certain friends?)"I think they think I'm still on the Board of Education," Huizar joked last week. (some wish that was still reality)Huizar has been on the City Council for six years and, after next year's elections, will be one of the senior members. (moment of silence for CD 14)There has been speculation that he will run for city attorney, but he said he has no interest in that job. (.... and Marcos Aguilar is a stellar educator)"I like what I'm doing here in the City Council, and I can serve another six years," Huizar said. "I have no plans on leaving before I serve all my time on the council." (Huizzy the Nuch!)
The Times first detailed the scheme in 2007, reporting that Taracena oversaw the award of more than 150 contracts to companies his brothers created. The article found that seven other contracts worth $289,000 were awarded to politically connected firms that had ties to current or former Los Angeles City Council members from the Eastside.
Grande Vista is headed by political consultant Gustavo Valdivia, a former member of Councilman Jose Huizar's staff. It landed a $98,895 contract.
A year later, (Samuel) In was listed in state records as chief executive officer of Grande Vista Associates, a consulting firm that had previously been linked to a scandal at the city's Housing Authority. A Times investigation in 2007 found that Victor Taracena, a construction manager for the authority, steered contracts to politically connected firms, including Grande Vista, without competitive bidding or after rigged contests. One bidder told The Times that he tapped Gustavo Valdivia, a former aide to Councilman Jose Huizar who was Grande Vista's lead consultant, to help him compete for the work — and found out that Grande Vista had secretly submitted its own lower bid. The housing authority paid Grande Vista nearly $99,000 to prepare schematic drawings of restrooms, parking stalls and ramps and other areas.
(Samuel) In said he received no income from Grande Vista and got involved with the firm as a volunteer only to learn more about public outreach, one of the services the firm provides. In also said Valdivia asked him to be an officer."I'm a very simple person. If I can help people, I will help. It's all a positive thing for me," he said.
I have seen him in action. And, he is an arrogrant person. He has run an incompetent department. DONE can not even get bills paid that neighborhood councils submit to them. DONE does not help with disputes either. Kim has done a horrible job running the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE).
But it is his attitude that is the worst. He is just plain arrogant. Those that want him elected will make this another race issue to try to get him elected.
Kim should quit now. If he goes on he is looking at some very bad interviews and debates when people hit him with negitative comments..
Coming from a person who has no axe to grind and has not seen him in action..> > He reminds me of a typical bureaucrat who see's how people fawn over him and hang onto his words and now he craves something more. He is going to have a huge disadvantage in that a ton of people know him and already dislike him. Touting him as this great new Asian-American symbol is going to be a non-starter, as very few Korean-Americans live in his district. It seems he is not known for his district work at all, but for administering the disasterous NC system which has gone really badly in many areas.> > Local residents need only remember one word and one name to know why Kim has no chance. Here's a hint. The best mayor LA has had in the past 50 years. Yes, Tom Bradley changed LA. But Glassell Park's "Bradley" will be the 5000 lb anchor that sends Kim to the bottom of Echo Park Lake...
