Great late morning to all after last night's CD 15 "Grass Roots Revival" and who do we find playing a prominent part in the Team Buscaino's festivities? None other than our old Mayor Sam  blogger and the "Driving Ms. Daisy of Los Angeles Politics" Michael "MEAT" Trujillo. We hope that Team Buscaino's fling with the consulting handy work of MEAT was only informal but by judging from the crowd buzz, Trujillo was a major player in Team Buscaino's victorious campaign. This morning, newly elected CD 15 City Councilman Joe Buscaino will announce his selection of Chief of Staff at City Hall. Look for someone from the previous council administration to be named to the position. After the jump, we have posted more photos from the Buscaino Victory Party. Never know who will turn up on film.

** Major buzz this morning over the indictments of former HACLA Official Victor Taracena and his brothers in the scheme to rig bidding on contracts back in 2007. How high will this scandal lead and the repercussions are cause for rampant speculation. But in the last few weeks, we here at Mayor Sam have come acoss information that inner connects the HACLA Scandal with those of other city departments. For now because of the sensitivity, we are not disclosing due to the potential for compromising on going investigations.

Live Blogging from Joe Buscaino's Victory Party

 Welcome and good evening from ground zero of the grass roots celebration of local kid Joe Buscaino goes to 200 N. Spring Street in the big city of Los Angeles. As the photos below will attest to, the LA Political Class has made their way south to welcome LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino to the City Council.  As of 9:30 P.M. Buiscaino has a 62-38% lead in the absentee ballots over Assemblyman Warren Furutani

** As of 9:45 P.M. with 7% of the precints reporting, Buscaino still leads 62-38%.

** 10:15 P.M. Sightings include former Mayor and now Judge Jim Hahn and Son of Mayor Amtonio Villar with the Young Democrats of Los Angeles County. Still no updated results. BTW, we have a Michael "MEAT" Trujillo sighting among Team Buscaino.

** 10:45 P.M. We have an update with 27% of the precincts reporting, Its 60-40% Buscaino. this blogger's favorite councilman from CD 14 just took the stage. THE HORROR!! That must be why staffer Daniel Andolon is here..Zine is also in the house with Chief of Staff Jimmy Blacjman> Zine has taken to the microphone offering up his son as a "ticket fiver". Buscaino is on the way down in 5-10 minutes.

** Its close to 11 P.M. and I should thank the members of the Buscaino Family for letting me share the fun of live blogging with them. With 50% of the precincts counted, Buscaino is above 60% and probaly won't dip below that percentage again.

Morning Briefs on the Los Angeles Political Machine for Tuesday

Who will replace now Congresswoman Janice Hahn in CD 15?

Great election morning to all in CD 15 as today heads towards the mid-day mark. A least 10-20% of the register voters will have the chance to send a resounding message to the operatives of the City of Los Angeles Political Machine by electing LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino to City Council. In actuality, the absentee ballots stored in boxes at the City Clerk may speak to that if they could, but rest assure that Team Buscaino and challenger Assemblyman Warren Furutani with his Mayor Villar/Labor allies will gather up all the register voters they can muster up to 7:59 P.M. Once the polls close, Team Buscaino will gather at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to await the election results which we will live blog here at Mayor Sam. ** Watch for results of absentees at about 8:45 P.M. If they break 60-40% for Buscaino, then say hello Councilman Buscaino.

** One contentious issue that the new CD 15 office holder will have to deal with is the LAPD policy on impounds of vehicles driven by non-license drivers. The Los Angeles Police Commission will meet this evening in Northridge and expect a big crowd thanks to the likes of KFI's Johns and Ken. If one cares, take the time to read the letter of Dan Rosenberg to Mayor Antonio Villar. Rosenberg lost his 25 year old son to an unlicensed driver and have not received any response from the Mayor's office.

** The City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department have set up a website to showcase the three options to replace the toxic brownfields creative by Occupy LA. at City Hall. The irony here is that the landscaping cost of either option will include paying the gardeners caretakers represented by SEIU 721, who were a big supporter of Occupy LA. 

** Nice tidbit from Simone Wilson aka "The Snarky One" at the LA Weekly on the Assembly voting record of CD 9 City Council aspirant Assemblyman Mike Davis. It seems that Assemblyman Davis will fit right in to the horseshoe as he only voted "no" 0.01% of the time in Sacramento.

Belated LA Times coverage of a political upset in South LA

San Pedro native and LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino will become the fresh face of Los Angeles Politics after his grass roots juggernault dispatches the Mayor Antonio Villar/Labor Machine on Tuesday.

 Current City Councilman Paul Koretz will not have his political identical twin Assemblyman Warren Furutani joining him on the City Council.

We want to take this brief moment on a NFL Playoff Sunday to note the appearance of the Los Angeles Times on the crossroads of the CD 15 Special Election coverage. With Election Day less than 48 hours away, the Old Gray Hag on Spring Street saddled up its "journalistic medicare scooter" to generate some last minute column inches of campaign coverage on the latest defeat that will beset the Mayor Antonio Villar Machine on Tuesday.

While the fresh face of the victor may surprise many, the fact that the mayor's hand-picked choice in this race is going down hard, should come as no surprise. CD 15 and its San Pedro base have never been fertile ground  for Mayor Villar's policy initiatives. Retired LAUSD Administrator and San Pedro resident Neil Kleiner in 2007 barely lost to the mayor's choice for LAUSD District 7 School Board Seat, Dr. Richard Vladovic 53%-47%, with merely five figures in campaign funding. 

Local leadership for years have come in the form of Hahns, whether it was the Pops, son or daughter and their edits had been carried out by loyal operatives, namely McOskers. Many assumed that someday, "a McOsker" would replace now Congresswoman Janice Hahn on the City Council 

But come Tuesday evening, it will not be a McOsker that replaces Congresswoman Janice Hahn on the horseshoe, but a "local hero" who never sway from serving with character or leaving the community of his birth, unlike Pat McOsker who rediscover home in time to run for office.

This campaign has shown that community roots and service are paramount in the minds of the local electorate. Thus, when presented with the chance to stand behind a home grown candidate who's "character of service to community" was unmatched by most, they created and sustain a grass roots campaign structure (with the excellent leadership of Campaign Consultant Eric Hogensen's team) that will be study by many political scientists for years to come.

Morning Briefs on the Los Angeles Political Machine for Monday

 City Controller Wendy "The Valley Greuel".

The "Valley Greuel" eyes no problem with Mayor Antonio Villar's $100 Million shell game.

Welcome to the second week of 2012 and as we look onwards to the 2013 Mayoral Elections, there is a small issue of $100 Million dollars in delay payments (ie. the cost of maintaining Mayor Villar's fiscal legacy) that may become an inconvenience for a certain "City Controller". While the likes of former Deputy Mayor  Austin "Mini-Riordan II" Beutner called this budgetary maneuver "Enron", the City Controller Wendy "The Valley Greuel" morphed into the "fiscal ostrich" that blends into the political landscape of denial, said nothing. 

As noted "Valley Greuel" observer Paul Hatfield opines in his blog post on the topic, this void of denial can have dire consequences. Complete disclosure of all material events and obligations is one of the fundamental responsibilities of a controller in private industry or government. Failure to disclose critical information could lead to criminal charges under certain circumstances. $100 million is material in all aspects to the city, especially if it could very well come due much sooner than later (see addendum below for the extent of the disclosure in the city’s financial statements). Thus, "delay and deny", may have a large cost for the mayoral aspirations of the "Valley Greuel".

** Desperate times call for ............ "Reggie the Alligator" as Parke Skelton attempts to garner votes for Assemblyman Warren Furutani, from the gentrified amphibian enclave of Machado Park in CD 15. One wonders if Parke would of gone to the "Chupacabras for Huizzy" if the 2011 CD 14 race had been closer?

** Surprise, surprise another Building and Safety Inspector accuse of misusing his position for personal gain. Ronald Diaz collected $5,500 dollars from Ana Perez to "resolve permit issues" on work for her day-care center but hey, Diaz offered to deduct $2,000 from the balance in exchange for photos of Perez's breast.

** Mayor Villar is ensconce in Sacramento among state legislaturers, attempting to delay the demise of CRA. After all, protecting the outreach proclivities of the likes of CASA 0101 should be of paramount concern.

The much anticipated political battle between Congressman Howard "of the Berman-Waxman Machine" Berman and Congressman Brad "Assemblyman Mike Gatto's Political Papi" Sherman, got underway with the first dialog/debate among the two congressman who would like to retain their government salary and two republicans Shelly Smith and Mark Reed, who seek to channel "David" in the battle with the democrat "Goliaths".

As hundreds looked on in Woodland Hills, Congressman Sherman wasted no time in morphing into the Parke Skelton crafted progressive counter to the pragmatic Berman. Meanwhile among the republicans, Reed was not afraid to draw the audience ire with his stance on illegal immigrants using public hospitals and extending unemployment benefits. Reed who ran against Sherman in the previous election cycle, could make the runoff if he is able to coalesce the support of the register republicans in the democratic-leaning district. but as illustrated in the print coverage above, the spotlight is on Jewish democrats.

Other news:

** City Attorney Carmen Trutanich staff are having some Sixth Amendment issues in its efforts to prosecute the member of the Flea Party/Red Rabble former occupiers of the now brownfields of City Hall.

** On the topics of the City Hall Brownfields, Recreation and Parks General Manager Jon Kirk Mukri and his staff will attend the Downtown LA Neighborhood Council meeting on Tuesday, January 10 to discuss options for revitalizing the "Red Rabble Watseland".

** The proposed $3 Billion NBCUniversal "Metro Studios@Lankershim Project, has gone up in the pipe smoke of those at MTA who sought to shill this massive project as a "net traffic reduser".

** The grass-roots CD 15 campaign juggernaut of San Pedro Native Son and LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino, continues to roll on and pick up support with the Daily Breeze Newspaper the latest to endorse the first time political aspirant.

** Lastly, as Buscaino's quest to represent CD 15 moves forward, his fellow "rank and file officers" are facing a more dangerous street, thanks to the California Prison Realignment that his challenger Assembly Warren Furutani supported. Thousands of "low level, non violent, non-revokeable parolees" are being release onto the streets and despite the spin from the LAPD brass, crime and attacks on peace officers will surely rise.

Buscaino leads the money race again in CD 15 Special Election

LAPD Senior Lead Officer and San Pedro Native Joe Buscaino, again leads in fundraising in quest to become next CD 15 City Councilperson.

As reported on the L.A. City Ethics website Joe Buscaino once again outraised his opponent Assemblymember Warren Furutani in his race for L.A. City Council. In the reporting period of December 5^th through December 31^st 2011, Joe Buscaino raised $60,466.50. Joe’s opponent during the same period raised $56,228, falling short by $4,238.50.

This is the second time since the November 8^th primary that Joe Buscaino has outraised his opponent, the first period bringing in $115,814.60, besting runner up Warren Furutani’s $70,823.50 by a total of $44,991.10. This brings the total amounts raised to $176,281.10 for Buscaino, to $127,051.10 for Furutani.

“I continue to be amazed by what we’ve accomplished through the power of a motivated grassroots effort,” Joe Buscaino stated, “With 12 days left in this race I’m very focused on finishing strong and taking our successes in fundraising, and turning that energy and focus into turning out the vote, and winning this race.”  

The Los Angeles Times recently did an analysis of the source of contributions, determining that Buscaino had raised 63% of his funds from within the district. The same report showed Furutani raising only 3% of his donations from within the district.

Somewhere the late LA County Labor Leader Miguel Contreras is shaking is head at what the likes of Mayor Antonio Villar and former Speaker Fabian Nunez have made of his once feared political machine.

City Councilman Eric Garcetti endorses Joe Buscaino in his own words

The grass-roots campaign that could is getting closer to making history in CD 15 and members of the ruling political community want to be a part of this historic event. LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino picked up the endorsement of former City Council President Eric Garcetti in his quest to become CD 15's next City Councilperson. Team Buscaino again highlighted their use of social media by uploading Garcetti's comments to You Tube after last night's GOTV campaign event. As Buscaino's momentum increases towards January 17 Election Day, the after campaign story will be the work of Campaign Consultant Eric Hogensen's team in crafting a campaign structure that combine the latest in social media with the grass-roots community support for its home grown (San Pedro) candidate.

First briefs on an aging Los Angeles Political Machine in 2012

City of Los Angeles politicos and insider elites bemoaning the demise of CRA LA.

Great New Year to all as we reassemble in the political cyber sphere for another year of blogging the exploits of the City of Los Angeles Political Community. As 2011 ended with the demise of the "Dear Leader Agency" of dispensing fiscal love and cut rate property to those with the elitist community of Los Angeles, what political dramas or events will transpire in 2012?

Foremost must be the evolving quest of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to craft a legacy of accomplishment as he nears his date with "last name reduction" ( ie. return of Villar) in 2013. With the likes of  "One Million Trees", "City-Wide Free Internet", "LAUSD Control" and "10,000 Police Officers" beyond his grasps, Mayor Villar has change tactics and pass on to the next mayor the task of paying the bills as not to taint his "current fiscal legacy". 

The first major political event of 2012 will take place two weeks from today in CD 15 as voters select the replacement to now Congresswoman and former Councilwoman Janice Hahn. If the flow of recent of recent endorsements is any indication, "the machine" led by Mayor Villar and LA County Labor Federation Leader Maria Elena Durazo is going to get its collectivist rear end kick by first-time political aspirant LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino. Buscaino picked up the endorsement of City Controller Wendy "The Valley Greuel". Thus, it looks that Assemblyman Warren Furutani may be the latest Antonio supporter to become a good-size speed bump for the mayor's bus to roll over.

The City Council gets ready to reconvene in the next few minutes, for its first meeting of the new year and right of the bat, the future of the Neighborhood Council system and its election process is on the agenda. CD 2 City Councilman Paul Krekorian is working with NCs to get elections funded and conducted in 2012.

LA Times endorses Joe Buscaino in CD 15

Score another major endorsement (if tepid) for San Pedro's LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino as the Los Angeles Times Editorial Board graced the first time political aspirant with its nod of approval to replace now Congresswoman Janice Hahn as CD 15's City Council rep. But lets make no false allusions about the insular elites that comprise the Old Gray Hag on Spring Street's Editorial Board, being enamour with Buscaino's grasps of the issues. Far from it, the Times scribes took both Buscaino and Assembly Warren Furutani to task for not being specific in regards to their stated questions. But in hindsight, the Times in endorsing Buscaino, with its journalistic story budget of dialog as documentation, can create a template that holds all officeholders accountable in the future, something that is six year and two mayoral elections overdue in Los Angeles print media.

 Is Parke Skelton getting gamed and sloppy in CD 15?

Does Joe Buscaino have "multiple personas" register to vote in CD 15?

Are we getting close to desperation time in the CD 15 Special Election?

It seems that the Warren Furutani Campaign is getting desperate in its search for absentee ballot voters as they arrive with Christmas stuff this week in CD 15 and Parke is leaving no voter untouched, including one "Joe Buscaino".

Apparently there is a identical twin to the "candidate Joe Buscaino" that shares the same address but not the same choice to replace Congresswoman Janice Hahn on the City Council as noted in the campaign letter above.

While "Candidate Joe" knows of no other sibling that shares his name and household, we wonder if at some point during his adult life, whether some incident cause "part of Candidate Joe" to leave his "current state of being" and assume a more progressive persona judging by his most recent voting record?

But then just maybe, we stumble upon a Parke Skelton strategy to register all eligible personas that are eighteen and over and judging from the growing momentum for Buscaino, he made need the "Roseanne Barrs of the world" and some multiple Evergreen Cemetery size precincts of new voters to offset Buscaino's growing support.

TGIF Afternoon Political News Dump 12-16-11: Saying Goodbye to Council President Eric "Tender Lover" Garcetti

 City Council President Eric Garcetti's Flea Party friends in better times

Garcetti willing to lower himself for his brother and sisters in the city family.

The who's who of the City of Los Angeles Insider Community gather at City Hall today to say goodbye to the  "tender lover" of the city's family. Whether it was union leaders, fellow politicos, business leaders, Hollywood developers, gadflys or assorted hanger ons, everyone in the insider community wanted to be on record saying good things about the "son of Gil" (** especially if somehow this kid becomes mayor in 2013). But the best tribute came from comedian Jimmy Kimmel as reported by the insider blogger of City Hall, Alice Walton.

“It really impressed me that everyone seems to like this guy and it’s easy to understand why everyone likes him — because he cares, he’s a wonderful piano player, he’s a very tender lover. Was I not suppose to mention that?,” Kimmel said, setting the tone for the speeches.

** Former CD 15 City Councilwoman now Congresswoman Janice Hahn, just does not have the heart to choose between LAPD Lead Officer Joe Buscaino or Assemblyman Warrren Furutani, to replace her at City Hall. But we should note Hahn visited Buscaino's Campaign Party on the night of the primary and said he could go all the way. On the other hand, Hahn needs all the union money she can get to win her current congressional campaign. Thus, no endorsement with Furutani the loser.

 Mayor Sam has just learned that incoming City Council President Herb Wesson has endorsed Joe Buscaino to replace Congresswoman Janice Hahn as CD 15's City Councilperson. Press release will be posted shortly.Via Councilman Herb Wesson,

Joe Buscaino reports $115,000+ in contributions for CD 15 Runoff, Assemblyman Warren Furutani ?? ** $70,000

 The grass-roots coalition that could, continues to support with cash LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino's quest to replace now Congresswoman Janice Hahn as CD 15 City Councilman. At the close of business today the City Ethics Commission reported that the Buscaino Campaign has raised an additional $115,000 for the runoff election on January 17, 2012. This on top of $75,000 in Independent Expenditure money from the Police Protective League is just the start of the expensives ahead for Team Buscaino.

Meanwhile Assembly Warren Furutani has only noted that his campaign has raised $50,000 with no current monetary specifics yet on file with the Ethics Commission. ** Late P.M. update via "The City Maven" that the Furutani Campaign reported $70,000 in contributions.

Late Morning Briefs on the crumbling Los Angeles Political Machine for Thursday

Assemblyman Warren "Raging Potato Head" Furutani.

Great morning after another stimulating LA-32 Neighborhood Council Meeting where the "politics of wind", "a MIA LAPD" and a "absentee council office" was all the rage on a Wednesday evening. But not to retrograde into a LA-32 rant, lets focus on issues outside the "Fiefdom of the Huevon". ** BTW, the "Fiefdom of the Huevon" does not believe in celebrating the holidays with its constituents. Maybe this has to do with the transferring of $1.245 Million dollars from the CLARTS Fund into the "One Percent Staffer Fund"?

** Today is the latest financial reporting deadline for the candidates in the CD 15 Special Election Runoff between LAPD Lead Officer Joe Buscaino and Assemblyman Warren Furutani. Don't be surprise to see a Furutani edge in money considering his recent endorsement from the Los Angeles County Labor Federation, but don't under estimate the Buscaino Campaign's ability to surprise.

** Ron Kaye has his thoughts on the "2nd Most Powerful Person at City Hall" newly elected City Council President Herb Wesson, incorporated into the latest missive from Neon Tommy Alumnist now LA Weekly Scribe Hillel Aron. Lets not forget that Wesson's power is derive mainly from the backroom arm-twisting from the likes of staffer Andrew Westall.

** CD 2 City Council Paul Krekorian is seeking relief from the City of Los Angeles Ethics Commission to offset the looting of $50,000+ by indicted Democratic Campaign Treasurer Kinde Durkee from his campaign account. As reported by the LA Weekly, Krekorian's campaign consultant Eric Hacopian is the largest outstanding creditor at $67,000 which has led to speculation from the likes of Dario Frommer, Assemblyman Mike Gatto and assorted Gatto Truthers, that Hacopian would have to part with his ownership shares of Mayor Sam to offset the Krekorian revenue loss. We have no comment ; ).

** What former SEIU 6434 Strongman Tyrone Freeman could not purchase for LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas the Coliseum Commission could, as the SEIU supported politico is implicated in using commission funds to purchase Carolina Panthers football tickets and not reporting to purchase on the pertinent reporting forms.

Another City of Los Angeles Employee Union endorses LAPD Senior Lead Officer Joe Buscaino for City Council District 15. From the Buscaino Campaign.

(San Pedro) – This morning AFSCME District Council 36 announced their endorsement of Joe Buscaino, candidate for the L.A. City Council, District 15. “I am proud to announce our endorsement of Joe Buscaino for L.A. City Council,” said Alice Goff, President of AFSCME District Council 36. “We are excited about this race and his campaign.” “As a union member myself, it means so much to garner the support of AFSCME District Council 36 and their membership” commented Buscaino. “There is so much at stake for city employees, and I will make sure they are heard when I am elected to City Hall. As the next Councilmember for District 15, I will work hard to represent my union brothers and sisters.” AFSCME District Council 36 consists of nearly 50 member Locals with almost 25,000 individual members in Southern California.

Afternoon Briefs on the "newest pieces" of the Los Angeles Political Machine for Tuesday

Little did Paris Hilton know in 2007 at the Grammy's after party that she would be posing with two generations of Villar/raigosa politicos. Mayor Antonoi Villar's Princeton educated son Antonio Villaraigosa Jr.   was just elected to the Executive Board of the Los Angeles County Young Democrats. No word whether Parke Skelton had a role in the election of "Lil Tony" Villaraigosa to his first political position (** irony here is if the rumors are true in 2013, the younger Tony will retain the "Villaraigosa Brand" while Papi reverts to Villar via divorce settlement).

** We are seriously considering the creation of the "media enabling award" for a local journalist who strays from the principles of non-bias reporting and engages in PR musings on the behalf of a local political entity. So far we have two nominations with "LA Antonio Times" Columnist Jim Newton's missive promoting a DWP rate increase on the behalf of Clean Water and the City Maven's Alice Walton who's question to Mayor Villar on why the "Health Department" did not shut down Occupy LA, enable the Mayor to momentarily put the blame on someone else for his lack of leadership regarding the "Flea Party Poopout".  

Buscaino leads Furutani 59%-29% in latest CD 15 Poll

Blogger's Notes: In the most recent CD 15 Special Election Poll released today, Joe Buscaino has an overwhelming 59% to 29% lead over Assemblyman Warren Furutani with 11% undecided. The poll conducted by The Feldman Group. Further, the poll shows the growing entrenchment of Buscaino support with 53 percent certainly to vote for Buscaino while only 20% are certain in their voting support for Furutani. The poll shows Buscaino leading in most demographics and areas with 71%-20% margin in San Pedro.
