A Morning Brief on Biological (and Political) Inbreeding via Steve "Mini Riordan I" Soboroff

The failed Political Replication of former Mayor Richard Riordan, now Police Commissioner Steve "Mini Riordan I" Soboroff, again highlights his Political DNA Linkage to LA's former top officeholder, by inserting "Foot in Mouth" while describing the alleged biological similarities of a Donald Trump Rally attendees.

** Blogger's Note: The following is a quick bloggin dissertation on the follies of Political Replications as exampled, again, by former failed Mayoral Candidate, now LAPD Commissioner Steve "Mini Riordan I" Soboroff. Longtime political observers will remember that the noted Frontperson of the Playa Vista Development, was former Mayor Richard Riordan's choice to succeed him upon completing his Second Term in 2001, but fail to make the Runoff where James Hahn defeated the then Antonio Villaraigosa. The similarities between Riordan and Soboroff in community endeavors, political philosophy, and mannerisms, has garnered the current Police Commissioner the bloggin moniker of "Mini Riordan I", especially when he inserts "foot in mouth, via tweets", just as the former Mayor did on multiple occasions before the Era of Social Media. Judging from the tweet below, "Mini Riordan I" was channeling the mindset of the late (and disgraced) former CBS Football Commentator (and Gambler) Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder, in giving his thoughts on the alleged biological linkage of those who attended a recent Donald Trump Rally in Indiana. Its apparent via the silence from Mayor Eric Garcetti, that racial stereotyping/commentary regarding alleged inbreeding practices involving White People, is acceptable speech for his Mayoral Appointees. But we bloggin DARE note that if the rally attendees were Black, Asian, Latino, Indigenous or Female .........., then at this moment, there would be one less "Mini Riordan" serving in any official capacity within the City of LA----Scott Johnson.

Playa Vista Developer/ Political Insider/ Former Mayoral Candidate Steve Soboroff will never be the politico poster child of understating a given cause or policy position.

Beginning his Recreation and Parks Commission days in the 1990's, mixed with a fail mayoral campaign, a successful effort to develop the massive Playa Vista Project and a disjointed stint as the "Foot in Mouthpiece" for reviled, former LA Dodgers Owner Frank McCourt, "Mini-Riordan I" Soboroff has never been accuse of an understatement (maybe with bombast for added affect).

Witness the very first moments yesterday after his selection by Police Commission peers as its new Chairperson. "Mini-Riordan I" emulated his fellow RINO Republican mentor ( by taking a hasty policy position) in pontificating on his desire that all LAPD field officers be equip with uniform-fitting video cameras.

On the surface, the idea has merit and should undergo further vetting, but just espousing a new policy position for the sake of garnering column inches in the "Old Gray Collectivist Hag on Spring Street" ( BTW, just think of the coverage "Min-Riordan I" would be receiving today in a Dick Riordan owned fishwrap, but I digress), does not gloss over "big picture" policy issues that are of more paramount concern.

For example, now LAPD Commission President "Mini-Riordan I" Soboroff needs to reform the politically-corrupt "Com-Stat Crime Reporting System" that has seen LAPD Senior Lead Officers become political shills for Police Chief Charlie Beck's cover-up on the true levels of violent crimes in LA.

But even of more paramount concern, is the impact of AB-109 Prison Realignment on an already, overextended LAPD. "Mini-Riordan I" Soboroff should ponder what good video-equipping LAPD patrol officers will do when close to 300 Blue Liners are being redeploy from street duties, to deal with the ramifications of now City Attorney Mike Feuer's Legislative Co-authored "Non Revocable Parolee/ Non-Violent Offender" debacle.

We wish "Mini-Riordan I" the best in his new public calling, but as in the case of his former Mayor/ Mentor, putting thought before espousing, is better than swallowing foot.

In a move truly reminiscent of shutting the barn door after the horse has left, CM and possible Controller candidate, Dennis Zine, has called for reforms at the Department of Building and Safety.

Assemblyman Mike Gatto has reversed course and issued an apology for his rant about not getting paid when Controller John Chiang followed the law and refused to pay lawmakers who did not turn in a balanced state budget on time.  Blogger Paul Hatfield correctly notes that Gatto's apology is appropriate however the issue of the budget mess remains. Gatto, who received tough treatment from KFI's John and Ken last week, can be relieved the shock jocks are reportedly on vacation this week.

"We need more people like Frank McCourt". the LA Times comment section that follows the report of your Papi Riordan like gaff, is going viral with irate readers taking umbrage at your myopic comment (Times just turn off comments, Papi Riordan and Broad must of complain to the editor). ** Comments still going strong and Mini-Riordan is getting bashed.

Recalling his abuelito and hoping for sunny days ahead Mayor Villaraigosa laid out massive jobs and budget cuts for the City in his annual State of the City address.  The event was indeed somber; the Mayor only drawing applause when he made reference to historically low crime rates in the City.  Villaraigosa also lambasted critics as "clucking pundits" who were proven wrong by voters who approved the controversial phone tax, Measure S. However Clucker-in-Chief Mulholland Terrace recalls a 2008 op-ed piece he authored for the Los Angeles Times clearly outlining the fraud that Measure S was and how the voters were duped by the grandson of Pedro Acosta.

What was promised to be a big kick-off to Phil Jennerjahn's attempt to recall Mayor Villaraigosa turned out to be a big thud.  Phil reported earlier Tuesday evening to have completed one petition which if the version we have access to online is correct, the two page document only has space for five signatures. Among the latest questions about this effort - which could distract from other efforts to bring about reform in Los Angeles - are 1) if this is not about anyone's ego why is Walter Moore being touted as the first signer of the petition and 2) If Phil's strategy for victory includes pulling in disgruntled City workers why does he post commentary that "public employees are killing this country?"

When you're a carpetbagger running for a statewide seat in a state you didn't grow up in what do you? Bring in your former boss who happens to be a former President of the United States.  Andrei Cherny, formerly of AD40 here in the Valley is running for State Treasurer of Arizona is hosting a big campaign event featuring President Bill Clinton, for whom Cherny was once a wonderkind speechwriter for.  And to prove he's a man of the people, if you can't afford the $840 to meet the former philanderer-in-chief in person all you po' folks can ante up $25 for the chance to win a raffle to get into the party.  An insider recently told me that Cherny has little chance to win the race for Treasurer, an insignificant position in Arizona state government, but he's setting himself up for a Congressional race in 2012.

Now that he has succeeded in getting the final phase of the controversial Playa Vista development approved, CEO Steve Soboroff is stepping down.  The LA Times reports that the move appears to be voluntary and quotes the former Riordan administration insider as wanting to move on to his next big challenge.

Ron Galperin, runing for Weiss's Council District 5 spot, leads former Assemblyman Paul Koretz by over two-to-one in fundraising to-date. There's only a year to go in this election...

When downtown LA pols talk affordable housing, they generally talk about slush funds for developers and contractors. They don't talk so much the simple math of Section 8 and conversion, which costs the taxpayers far less. And then there's developer Greg Pearlman, who Westside Today featured last week. Pearlman's company has 12,000 Section 8 units, and hopes to go to 20,000. The taxpayer's bang-to-buck ratio looks pretty good on Pearlman projects, unlike the ratios that come out of the Mayor's office's projects.

And watch the Westside Today family for increasing expressions of disenchantment with the Mayor. They were recently given a big boost by a group that included Steve Soboroff. When Dick Riordan went on KFI last night, broadsiding the Mayor, it wasn't just the usual Riordan open-mouth-insert-foot performance. It was more calculated than that, and there are rumbles that Riordan, Soboroff, Wardlow, and Broad are all ditching the Mayor and looking for a new, er, white knight who can restore some reality to the City and local politics. Match that with Soboroff's investment in Westside Today and you're watching early 2009 unfold in early 2008.

Postscript: Coming home from the Westside, 3:30 p.m.---I don't know how you people put up with that. Venice is now the worst coordinated east-west street in LA, and that is saying very much. Trying to book north, I guess Rimpau is the new Highland---but only up to 3rd. Thanks, Steve, thanks Dick, thanks Tony, thanks Gloria!
