Does 99% Of LA Have Any Rights Remaining? (Asking For 4 Million Friends)

I found myself unexpectedly redirecting traffic in the middle of Ventura Boulevard last week after slamming my brakes to avoid driving over a deeply disturbed young man whose life had become so unraveled that he was rolling on the pavement and speaking incoherently in the middle of the bustling intersection.

Beyond risking his own safety, being so low to the ground, he also risked the safety of everyone else in the area, such as another driver who did not see him when quickly changing lanes to avoid the jam he had caused...once again.

I write "once again" because the man's situation became clearer when the first LAPD patrol car and LAFD ambulance rolled up.

Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Friday

Repercussions continue from the cancelled City Council meeting due to a lack of quorum caused by tardy Clowncil members.  The Daily News takes the Clowncil to the woodshed for showing "an implicit disrespect for the people the City Council is supposed to serve." Of course in a few short months the Daily News will endorse all these same incumbents.

The City reports that its new credit card parking meters are raking in the dough. Remember if a parking meter doesn't work it's no longer a free parking pass. You have to actually move your car elsewhere. Non-totalitarian cities in LA County such as Burbank don't hold you up for parking and don't even have meters.

Losing Our History

As the Mom of a 3rd Generation Valley Girl, it made me more than a little sad to read Connie Llanos’ piece in the DN today about development superseding the historical preservation of some of the Valley’s most important homes and landmarks.

"In an attempt to revitalize an area, the history and quality of life suffer from overdevelopment," said Richard Hilton, a Valley historian.

Hilton cites the Josef von Sternberg House in Northridge. Designed in 1935, it was regarded as one of the finest pieces of work from modernist architect Richard Neutra. But it was torn down in 1972.

There was also the Valley Music Theater, the area's first performing arts center, which hosted Bob Hope, Jim Morrison and other celebrities. It was demolished to make room for condominiums in 2004.

The Getty Museum has stepped in to help with a $2.5 million grant to undertake a citywide survey on historic sites. An assessment of LA’s preservation work (a Getty-sponsored report) puts the percentage of the city’s geography overlooked by preservationists at roughly 85%.
