I Am Not A Number

Number Six is finally a free man.

Patrick McGoohan, the classy, intense British actor who wrote, produced and starred in The Prisoner has passed away yesterday at age 80. McGoohan's last high-profile role was as King Edward I in Braveheart, although things would have been very different if he hadn't turned down originating the role of James Bond on the big screen. And he would have been absolutely magnificent at it. In his review of Braveheart in The Los Angeles Times, reviewer Peter Rainer noted that: "Patrick McGoohan is in possession of perhaps the most villainous enunciation in the history of acting." Missing out on the Bond bandwagon never seemed to bother McGoohan as it did other actors.

Most of us remember probably McGoohan as Agent John Drake from the popular CBS series Danger Man/Secret Agent Man first, then as The Prisoner. Speculation continues today whether the Village's most famous guest was indeed John Drake. McGoohan had recently been developing a Prisioner feature film and new series. Now with his's passing, we may never know the real identity of Number Six.
