Ivy League Blogging Lesson
I've learned a couple things in the last week. One, try not to blog late at night. Your judgment is impaired and you might just believe high tech spinmeisters.The other thing is never delete a post, no matter how much others - including Mayoral spokesmen, dedicated fans and your fellow bloggers - purty please you.
Yes this all goes back to the story of Mayoral son Antonio Villaraigosa, Jr. and his pre-freshman hijinks as he prepares to enter Princeton University.
You may remember on the heels of a number of a scandals involving his father (still under investigation by the way) that Antonio Vee (as he has referred to himself online) posted a series of comments on the social networking site Facebook referring to alleged drinking, partying, fake ID making and getting a pass from local law enforcement.
The posts created quite a stir - including getting the dum dums stirred up, a great time on the air for John and Ken (and by the way J&K did your producer ever tell you that I called and left my number?) and some late night spinmeistering from Tony Villar spokes-hole Matt Szabo.
And then I got clowned that I got clowned. That is someone sent me an email claiming that he was the author of the IvyGate blog piece that started it all and that the IvyGate is a fake news blog like The Onion.
Since then I think I've been re-convinced (I hope) that the IvyGate blog is legit. I was contacted by the real bloggers and that the stories about Antonio Vee were true (or at least not fake).
Upon some sage advice of blogger David Markland (yes, the one I called an idiot), I've also learned you never delete posts. Make a retraction, issue corrections, but never delete.
Yup, I goofed. I admit it.
So the real question is (after AVJR's behaivor and possible pass from local law enforcement) who is the bogus IvyGate blogger - the person who posed as writer Jacob Savage?
We don't know yet - but we're on their tail. The fake email has been traced to a computer somewhere in Thousand Oaks.
Inquiring minds want to know.
PS: On the other hand - maybe I've been clowned one more time - and IvyGate is fake. A comment on their blog says that like The Onion, IvyGate is "characterized by hard-hitting fact-based journalism." This sure is shaping up to be an insane summer.

Okay ... don't sweat it to death... the pics alone supported the story about Junior. Either way, it appears likely most, if not all, the story is correct - if you have some shred of doubt, then just add a comment or paragraph indicating that some aspects of the story MAY be in question ... further confirmation one way or another to come later when we are able ... probably sufficient. But I tend to think the original info on this one was pretty correct...
Transparency and accountability. The mayor could take some lessons from you.

Congratulations to Channel 4 and NBC - who owns Telemundo. Every media outlet gave Antonio a free pass for two years, but leave it up to this pervert to create a scandal were the inegrity of a media outlet comes into question. Now the floodgates are open.
Parke, you can't put this genie back in the bottle.
Every reporter out there will be on this new evidence that Thomas Saenz is withholding. Maybe even the L.A. Times wsill finally do some objective reporting - notice how they haven't run one story of this scandal on Sunday (70% of their readership is on Sunday).
The report didn't say that there were 47,000 messages, but rather that the Blueberry used 47,000 kilobytes. Some of that could have been used to send e-mails, and other kilobytes could have been used, for instance, to check sports scores on the Internet.

"I have no secrets," Schwarzenegger said in announcing last fall that he would release his calendar.

I haven't seen the story...can someone post more specifics....but from what i have just seen, so far, looks like NBC/Uni payback for the mayor's besmirching of Telemundo's credibility. And even if people say, "she stopped covering the mayor as soon as they heated up the relationship"...perception becomes the public reality, and so looks like NBC/Universal just pulled the plug on Antonio's machine.

Hahn may be a wimp - he proved that himself. But as far as being a crook, only a figment of Parke Skelton's imagination. Where are the charges? indictments? convictions? He certainly had a more transparent goverment than Antonio does right now.
Z is right about one thing: Ch 4 is especially tough because it's the Telemundo affiliate, and wants to show that it has "integrity" after all. Even though Telemundo made Salinas read the divorce announcement after she told them she didn't want to, and they knew about the affair.

I saw the "Welcome to America" Posh Beckham show, and I almost liked her until she made a fool of herself at her son's Little League game. Take a look at that NBC video again. The beginning of the video shows two women on stage with Antonio - Cindy Montanez and Maria Elena Durazo - two other women that Antonio has had sexual relations with and subsequently appointed to high ranking commissions. How many other of his girlfriends have been appointed to commisions or received city contracts?
Allegations of “pay-to-play” and other improprieties made Hahn vulnerable, and the voters spoke loudly, saying they want City Hall to “clean up its act,” and giving Villaraigosa the go-ahead to do the job.
The bad news is that now he must deliver on his promises to “find at least $30 million in waste, fraud and inefficiencies to hire more police officers,” put “300 new officers on our streets now,” “make the Port of Los Angeles—which is responsible for 20 percent of the air pollution in the greater LA region—take every available step to reduce pollution,” “mandate that DWP clean up its natural gas-fired power plants in the LA Basin,” “completely convert our City’s vehicle fleet to clean fuels,” “use Carl Moyer funds to convert vehicles from diesel to clean fuels,” “increase…transit usage by expanding our bus and rail systems,” and “encourage construction along transit corridors so that we can reduce traffic congestion and pollution.” Villaraigosa has many more promises to make Los Angeles a “City of parks and greenway,” to increase “affordable workforce housing,” to “get traffic moving again,” to “clean…house at City Hall,” and “make LA animal friendly.”
A long list of good intentions, but time will tell whether Villaraigosa will confront the same brick walls Hahn faced now that the voters have put him in the Mayor’s office.

How ironic that in 1994 Victor Griego was crying all over the eastside because Antonio picked Parke SKelton as his consultant instead of Victor Griego, the most experienced Latino consultant in the eastside. This incident, BTW, was the premise for Ricardo Torres' "white consultant" piece that he put out in 2003.
Then Nick Pacheco hired Victor Griego to be his consultant in 1999 only to have Victor run against him. The whole eastside political establishment went on to support backstabbing Griego, but then Nick beat him. This was Miguel Contreras first "labor" loss and essentially spelled the end of Nick's career along with the end of progressive, grass root activism in the eastside.

Parke and the money behind Antonio knew that he was a liability. Huizar was chosen to be the back up in case anything went wrong. Well, somehting is going wrong. But Huizar, like Antonio, hasn't done anything in the eastside. No accomplishment to speak of but plenty of money and the consultant to sell his story. Was Huizar's dad also an alcoholic wife beater? At 34, Thomas Saenz is fast earning a reputation as one of the foremost civil rights attorneys in California. He has battled the state over the anti-immigrant Proposition 187 and challenged the Los Angeles Unified School District earlier this year over its school construction policies.
In recognition of his impressive record of fighting for Latino civil rights, Saenz last month received the Jack Berman Award of Achievement for Distinguished Service to the Profession and the Public. The award, given by the California Young Law-yers Association, honors the memory of a young pro bono attorney who was slain in the 101 California St. massacre in San Francisco and recognizes service to the legal profession and the public and dedication to issues of concern to attorneys.
A graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School, Saenz is regional counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in Los Angeles. He manages the office, which serves southern California, Nevada and Arizona, is its lead counsel in numerous federal court cases, and oversees a wide variety of litigation, appeals, consent decree monitoring, and public policy analysis in areas such as education, employment and immigrants’ rights.
Last year, MALDEF was instrumental in blocking the implementation of Prop. 187; when Saenz decided to cross-appeal the state’s desire to send the case to mediation, Gov. Davis dismissed the appeal. Prop. 187, approved by the voters in 1994, called for barring illegal immigrants from government services, including public education, welfare and non-emergency health care. Most of the major provisions of the measure were overturned by a federal district court judge, but the ruling was appealed by former Gov. Pete Wilson. Wilson left office before the case was argued, and Davis asked the court to submit the case to mediation.
This year, Saenz assisted in the filing of a major lawsuit to challenge the lack of school construction in overcrowded minority districts in urban Los Angeles. His strategy is to target the system under which bond monies are distributed on a first come, first serve basis rather than by need. “Thousands of Californians are both directly and indirectly affected by Tom’s work,” says Antonia Hernandez, MALDEF’s president and general counsel. “In particular, innumerable individuals are protected by the civil rights enforced through his litigation.”
In addition to his professional activities, Saenz is involved in numerous community groups, including the National Conference for Community and Justice and Califor-nia LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens).

Look for a a serikous fight - and plenty of press coverage - for those records that he is withholding.

I'm sure the Mayor just deleted them. The only way anyone can get public info act requests from the City is by suing them. I had to show them a completed motion to compel to get my first request. They've just stonewalled me on my last requests. The fine is $100 a day. Is there an attorney out there who'd like to help me collect this fine? I'll give you 33%. NBC 4 led tonight's late newscast with a five-minute piece by Ana Garcia reporting that Mirthala Salinas got the only one-on-one interview with Mayor Villaraigosa during a trip to New York in March 2006. She was there reporting for Telemundo 52, apparently after their affair had begun. Garcia also said the November 2005 evening when Villaraigosa was famously spotted with a bottle of wine at her Valley apartment was the same night of his controversial flight to the Rosa Parks funeral on the Ameriquest corporate jet. According to Garcia, he had been at the Telemundo studios in Burbank until 6:15 pm, then was with Salinas until catching the flight — undercutting his claim that taking a donor's jet was necessary because of timing. (The mayor later reimbursed Ameriquest, a campaign contributor and his former employer, for the cost of a commercial flight, but not the company's true cost of providing the plane.) In the Channel 4 piece, Garcia said the mayor's office first refused a demand for all of his emails to staff, but later clarified that he text messages but only receives email on his Blackberry.

Just some clarification. Corina was undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer, not breast cancer. And when Antonio first approached Pat Bond (Gloria Molina's late consultant) about being his consultant, she denied the request. Pat Bond didn't take the job because she told Antonio that cancer affects the whole family, not just one person and that a campaign would bring undue stress that will hurt with the recovery process. Pat should have known, she had been suffering from breast cancer and eventually succumbed to the illness.
But this didn't stop Antonio. He thought only of himself, as usual, and went on with the campaign and subsequent affiar with his law school buddie's wife - his comadre. Almost like having an affiar with a relative. Think Corina was exposed to any undue stress? Parke Skelton was more than willing to do the dirty deed and walla - we have Antonio the mayor now. Just an insight into the type of scumbag this asshole really is. Tonito, do you know this story?

12:02: If Villar was so selfish, as you see it, for running for office even while he wife was battling cancer, then what about Edwards? His wife is very visibly battling cancer, racking up a hectic schedule. People seem to be supportive, because it is her apparently sincere decision that he be able to get his message out there.
Corina admitted she never had a taste for the political life, being a political wife, and although she turned up for her husband now and then, and make a speech now and then, certainly didn't relish the "job" of political wife or believe in her husband the way Elizabeth does. So it's really a personal decision. Did Corina ask Villar not to campaign, or did she want him to go on anyway? And shouldn't he make up his own mind, too? It's always personal and sad when there is an illness like cancer, but if a person like Villar or Edwards feels it's his life mission to go "out" there, is staying home necessarily the right thing to do? Would such a frustrated person really be the emotional anchor his wife needs?
There are too many variables on both sides of that failed marriage to keep harping on the simplistic, "he left his wife."

I'm no fan of John Edwards, he looks like a prick just like Antonio and there's probably some truth to those Ann Coulter rumors. But Antonio campaigned as a family man while boinking his comadre and leaving his wife to fend for herself while he went forth with his personal agenda. Until death do us part, in sickness an din health - if he really were a man and had an ounce of integrity, he would have waited until his wife recuperated, which whe did. What's two years? But that didn't fit into Parke's grand plan of Latino manipulation in the eastside.
The best scenario would have been for Antonio never to get married - he acted like he wasn't anyway - and nobody would be questioning anything about his morals now. But he and Parke were so accustomed to lying, it was just second nature.
