"Are you 'For' or 'Against' using "un-documented" consturuction workers building luxury condos in Downtown Los Angeles (and Citywide)?"
People "For" allowing these non-union, un-documented workers to take jobs from documented/union workers is cheaper labor.
People "Against" this concept remind you that at the same time City Council adds new fees and tax hikes (bulky item, trash collection, solid waste, so much more) on these union/documented workers...the un-docs are taking their jobs, there is no accountability for their work/training/safety...and no way of assuring they are not a terrorist who just flew off a plane to sabatoge the project.
ZD IS: "AGAINST".
CITY COUNCIL IS: "FOR". (Since they know about it, and allow it, and don't take saftety precautions to prevent it.)
POST YOUR VOTE UNDER COMMENT SECTION.
AND WHILE YOU ARE AT IT...Please post a comment to City Council asking them to please try and "tighten up" the meetings. They waste hours each week on duplicative grandstanding and ass-kissing. Tell the eighth CM to press the button to speak, they don't have to stand up on camera to say, "I absolutley agree with the first seven CMs who said the same meaningless PR fluff. I WILL BE HIGHLIGHTING ALL THE FRIVOLOUS, TIME-WASTING THAT THESE CMs ARE USING THE PEOPLE'S TIME AND MONEY OVER.
And Council, maybe you should get some leverage on the shady (Valley) Jaycees operator who is using it to gather names and addresses for his future Council run, while posting on this blog from City Hall on City time...cause he keeps reminding me of things to mention. Like un-documented construction workers and how much time they waste each meeting with duplicative grandstanding, ass-kissing, marching bands, accolaids and raising all the problems -- then voting "yes" anyway. And to City Council...however miserable the past year and whatever has been fighting and waiting...It was almost worth it during ZD's triumphant stroll down Ocean Front Walk, yesterday...where the rastas and others who used to "battle" and "curse" me for space, were jumping out to give me a hand shake, heart pound, and "bless, bless".
And let me tell you City Council, I'm amazed and shocked how many people throughout the day at Venice recognized ZD from TV 35. (I mean, these are rastas, and hippies, and artists and kids and skateboarders...you wouldn't think they would be watching a City Council meeting.
AND EVEN THOUGH THIS TELLING OF THIS STORY IS GONNA MAKE THE HATERS HEAD EXPLODE...the smart people should be aware, it's good for ZD to get out of the batcave and experience the feedback. I think I've reached the level where I have some serious folks attention (on MY side of the ropes, not yours) who are WAY EXCITED that ZD no longer feels comfortable being "combative" with Eric over first amendment stuff. Hopefully, we are past that...and hopefully, I wouldn't respond as loudly (although still legally) if the issue arises "on the spot" while the clock is ticking. I want to start walking up to the podium and be your "two minute mandated retreat leader"...trying to inspire people on the "common ground" issues that even two respectful opponents can agree needs attention.
HOWEVER, ZD WOULD LIKE TO NOTE THAT HIS "VENICE BEACH ITEM 60" THE DAY HE TOOK OFF HIS HAT AND GLASSES AND WALKED OFF INTO THE SUNSET AND BACK ONTO VENICE WAS HOPEFULLY IT FOR A WHILE. WE'LL SEE...not making any hard promises, one way or the other...but I do feel like I have burned my share of rubber, for now...and some other folks can start showing up a little bit...And after my LAUSD and "Selling Out the Pueblos" articles from this week...those my friend, are my "graduation thesises", as well, and please make sure to check them out.
I'll continue to blog as well, but I gotta get back to some of the other aspects of "ZD" besides 100% "City Hall". (Wish me luck!)

If I were a small construction comapny working under a large engineering/construction firm. I would follow the lead of the city awarding the large building contracts and the large construction companies buying them.
Do everthing to my advantage, if I can hire cheap mexicans to do sloppy work at a reduced cost, then that is what I will do. Why would a sub-contractors hire only union workers at a higher cost.

We've heard about cases that have been referred to the District Attorney's office recently for review and wanted to hear some of the steps the commision is taking, or have taken, to insure that some of these allegations regarding "fraud" or self-dealing at the Housing Authority are being investigated and that policies are being put in place to insure adaquate supervision and protocals that those days are behind us and we are moving toward something that is more accountable because i think the public trust is the most important thing we have and obviously this cuts to the heart of that.

10:40: Our highschools need more apprenticeship programs for these sorts of trades -- Americans are not learning them, either. Instead of valuing apprenticeship and quality of workmanship as we used to and they still do in many other countries, we are setting unrealistic expectations for all kids to aspire to 4-yr- colleges, wasteful all around.

Meanwhile, Weinkopf says he has three kids under the age of 5 he's flying with on vacation soon -- beware -- and since he doesn't believe in the evils of birth control, there will be more of them trotting along soon. But he feels empowered by God Himself to pass judgments on the rest of us.

No - not. The catholic church is a cult, it is the largest representative of false christianity there is.
What other church in world history has been forced to pay anything like half a billion dollars (or the equivalent) as punishment for harming the very people it was supposed to be serving?

Mahoney just apologized, calling the whole thing "a terrible sin and a crime." Well, yeah, but at its core is the refusal to deal honestly with human sexuality. Now allowing priests and nuns to marry because "they're married to God" doesn't enable them to even understand their parishioners' problems, let alone give them counsel or, really, harsh judgments and penances. Denial of people in their fullness, faults and all, and (oops! no!) as sexual beings, leaves them with abstinance, anti- abortion and even contraception... just what the impoverished Mexican masses they serve need to hear.
Hiding under those long robes and high collars is not the solution.
Until the Church grows up, I'm not interested in any of their views or judgments, from the man/Latina in the street, to Chris Weinkopf or Mahoney or the Pope themselves.
As long as there is a fresh stream of illegal alien workers, willing to under-cut not only American union workers but also other illegal aliens the small and large business will continue to break the law. Combine that with a local government publicly ignoring federal law or even sanctioning shielding orders (#40) basically with a wink and full pockets of campaign donation cash will stick it to the American worker union and non-union.
As for the church, when will the followers denounce this behavior of cover-up and seek the removal of all those who have kept the truth from being told. And demand new leadership. I the case of the City of Los Angeles, at least we can vote them out!

BUT I am concerned that the lenient attitude towards illegals will allow anyone to infiltrate our city. Even the Bush admin. finally acknowledged the obvious: that Al Qaeda is coming across the border, disguised as Mexicans. And where will they go?

Hate to break it to you, zuma, but you're not the first to want to cut down on presentation time; one or two CM's hardly ever do it cuz they are too distracting from business (yes, as you and certain others are), but, since there is always backlash for being different/thinking on your own, taking up too little time has been frowned upon. If they can contain a few worst offenders, like Hahn of the big bands etc., and a couple of the Hispanics and Zine, they should be able to trim a lot of dead weight. Especially on days when the agenda is full and there are speakers waiting.

Their presentations (with some exceptions) are actually to honor other people. Who have done something USEFUL.

I'd like to see Italians do all the construction, because they will attract really good, cheap restaurants just like on the Sopranos -- otherwise, where can you get a really good canneloni outside of Little Italy? -- and also, for a bonus, they will sing operettas like the gondoliers and wear striped shirts and big hats.
Of course, they are temperamental and never finish a job, get to work at ten and take three-hour lunches, and if you criticize them they will scream at you and walk off the job, just like in Italy, but they are fun to be around.
