Mayor Sam Gets Clowned By Fake Blog

NOTICE: Please click this link for an update to the following story. I am - for now - retracting this story and republishing the stories in question.

Why did I pull the two stories about Antonio Villaraigosa, Jr. It's quite simple. The story wasn't true. At least most of it wasn't.

I received the following late Wednesday night:

My name is Jacob Savage, and the original author of the post about antonio villaraigosa jr. It was a light-hearted jest at him because of his attendance at Princeton University. Because of my post, I have been asked to clear up any confusion regarding its intention. I've e-mailed gawker.com and other that have picked it up not to treat it like real news. We are an Ivy league version of the Onion, with sometimes real news to confuse.

A wannabe Phil Hendrie of blogs clowned the old, dead Republican mayor. Okay, I admit it. There certainly were elements of the story (primarily special treatment by law enforcement) that concerned me. It does bring up some good questions about how this and other blogs operate. However, perhaps not enough to change things as the good we get probably outweighs the occasional goof up like this.

As of this writing, Savage did not respond to my questions asking him to confirm if he was the person who posted the fake comments on Facebook posing as Antonio Villaraigosa, Jr.

Now it may be there are still elements of the story that are true. The only thing that would concern me is if AVJR got a pass from police for underage drinking. We have received conflicting emails from kids who said they were at the infamous beach party (which did occur as the photos show; the only thing in question is the availability of alcohol and the involvement of the police).

I still stand by the appropriateness of reporting a story like this. As I explained to Zuma Dogg on the phone and many of you on the blog its not unfair to expect that members of any elected official's family not get special treatment from the law. This applies to Michele Degladillo as much as it does to Antonio Villaraigosa, Jr. So even though yes, I was contacted by the Mayor's office, it was the email from Savage that prompted me to take it down - not the Mayor, not my buddy Zuma Dogg's brotherly attempts to counsel me or anything else.

We have enough trouble getting bad information organically we don't need it manufactured. Now lets get back to the real scandals and keep the heat on.

So, I'm ready for your slings and arrows.

I believe the post is real because I see responses to his post still in facebook. He's been posting there since April. The people at the party admitted to the party. In the photos you see the corona that he talks about. One of the partygoers said that police did show up. I think you've been had by the cover up story.

I, a merry prankster, sent you all that incorrect information about Mirthala Salinas. She didn't really have an affair with the Mayor. I made everything up, the Times articles, Daily News article. I even forced the Mayor to admit to the affair which never happened. You can take all that crap off your blog now. Sorry and thanks.

You know most of the stories in the National Enquirer are true because the maids, nannies, personal assistants, drivers etc. call in to the paper because their clients treat them horribly and its payback. So don't be so quick as to think there's no truth to some gossip. Besides there have been a lot of stories posted on this blog that were true but media didn't report til way after the fact. Disappointed LA Weekly is falling behind with the big stories and where is David Z?

I am sure there are elements of truth in all of this, but way too much "heresay" and college hi-jinks for MayorSam to thumb through.

The Daily News is not allowing comments on its articles anymore, as of just today, it seems. But they must have had a different reason, criticism of its writers and editors including one who admitted that she thinks all politicians are liars and crooks, and she is one of their main political reporters. Maybe. Seems odd, though, after a week of running anti-AV columns and stoking readers.

They are more than happy to make full use of them to propel their sorry selves into the spotlight and manufacture a career or persona and to continue to generate interest on the part of the drooling masses and to drain them of their money. Sorry, you bargained away your privacy, along with your soul, when you made your bargain with that particular devil and you don't get to cry "leave me alone" when it's convenient for you and you don't want that spotlight on you!

This 18 year old guy (NOT child) and his father are all too happy to pull all the strings they can and to make full use of every special deal Villar's current position can afford them and that does NOT include privacy, respect or NO scrutiny!

As for Daily News, yeah, they got more readers after breaking the story, mostly the Jerry Springer/ Jon and Ken fans who don't normally follow politics; and in the bargain, they've lost credibility and the respect of the people they cover.

The way Beth went after the 85-year-old mother of Corona, after following up leads at Salinas' dead mother's funeral home in Phoenix, was really classy. I'm sure a lot of the readers here would agree with their writer who tried to sound hip by calling all politicos slime, like many here do, but they did it at the cost of any credibility and limited future legit access and scoops. They are in crisis mode, like any tabloids who sink that low to nab readers.

Unlike personal interviews, Survey USA uses automated responses so there is no real guarantee its an actual person pushing the buttons and not a little kid, pet, etc. A lot of media firms like to use them and politicians like Antonio Villaraigosa do better in these polls than in more scientific surveys because of name recognition.

This type of questioning belies your own lowered expectations for people based on their race and/or ethnicity.

There is no indication that Antonio Villaraigosa Jr. is the beneficiary of any affirmative-action. Furthermore, in a city that is nearly 50% Latino, what type of boost would he expect?

Don't get me wrong. All politicians family members are subject to coddling by way of being children of pols. BUT there is no indication that AV Jr's would be based on his ethnic heritage.

It's the new white boogieman. I missed my opportunity for success because some minority took my place.

Here's a clue. I've studied at Cornell, USC, Vanderbilt and was accepted by many other top-flight schools. Good schools want good applicants. You can make a good applicant of yourself by working hard instead of whining.

It's not a matter of "fair game". Of course it's fair game, and ZD doesn't fall for the "boo hoo hoos" of the mayoral supporters saying, "Leave the poor guy out of it." (Even though ZD feels that way...these cold-hearted politicians don't care...if they did...why would they hack in and re-post it for further exposure???)

Point is, again...he's fair game, so what? Is that why the city is tanking? Is that why LAUSD is failing? Is that why he didn't hire the 1000 new cops, even though he's bragging in the media that he raised the money. How he is milking the coffers with all his non-profit bamboozles and conflict of interest appointments like the fashion designing planning commissioner. Hate to break it to you Antonio, that's kind of a specific knowlege (planning)...and you are throwing these positions away to non-qualified people.

Antonio Jr got into Princeton because of affirmative action. Not because he's Mexican but because he's privileged.

And that's been going on for centuries.

We all know that affirmative action exists. That is nothing new. It's been going on as long as their have been legacy admmissions and membership in exclusive "community service organizations."

Many minorities benefit from affirmative action. Many whites benefit from a broad range of unwritten privileges. There are clubs I can join based on my income and profession which give me access to a broad range of policy makers and influential people.

Those facts do not preclude any minority from getting ahead based on their own merits. If you believe that every minority you encounter is of lesser qualifications than you....you sir/madam are a racist.

Here's some irony. I mentored a young African-American student recently. She carried a 4.24 gpa at prestigious high school. She was in the top 2% of SAT test takers. She was editor of the school paper. She lettered in two varsity sports. On top of that she gave up about 10 hours a week as a volunteer.

She was looked over at UCLA because of their holistic admissions process. She was not "black" enough.

I also have a family friend with a name that carries a lot of weight throughout LA. His son carried a 3.7 gpa. His SAT was unremarkable. He's a great kid, but did not do much extra curricular activity in high school.

He got into UCLA. He is white. Both kids are going far in life. Both families are upstanding. One family has a name that goes back locally for 3 generations of wealth and status. The other has nothing more than hard work and persistence on their side.

Affirmative action takes many forms. Try getting a city contract. I don't care what your last name is, you'd better know somebody downtown.

It's not a perfect world. But your presumptions of privilege are not founded until you can prove otherwise.

AV Jr. may well turn out to be a beneficiary of his family name or he could turn out to be Madam Curie. Who knows?

But to burden some 18 with the weight of your own inadequate efforts and/or achievements just is not fair.

Here's a fork. You're done.

And about the so called poll helllooooo remember the LA Slimes did a poll saying the majority of americans were for illegal immigration. Hey, if Matt Szabo and Parke, Ace or whoever really want to know what the people of LA think call around like I did and you will find people are pissed because not only did Antonio embarrass LA to the nation but it showed his lack of maturity and desperation to get laid with a woman who has been with his friends. That goes to bad judgement having an affair while being married and choice of who to have it with. I think it was all EGO. Lil Fabian needed to be put in his place. HELLO! They have just instituted censorship after this series of bash pieces. CENSORSHIP, do you get it?

People don't do that when they are getting articulately supportive comments. Sure, they got support from the angry Latinas, right wing Catholics, some who opined that the whole problem stems with "the Jews" somehow == as have anti-semites in this blog -- but real journalists cringe at the lack of integrity.
And the more cogent comments were very critical of them. You don't institute CENSORSHIP of praise!

And you're saying that some hostile backbiting politos/staffers (Pacheco still turning in his grave and other such lofty personages) dishing dirt, makes up for their loss of access to most?

This whole sleazy turn in level of tabloidism, holding even old and dead ladies and kids fair game, worst in blogs like this (and weirdly, scholarly, anti- semitic Luke Ford, who is naturally revered by the ignoramuses here), ensures that people who go into "public service" will say, no way, yuk, and leave you with the officials you DESERVE; the worst egotists, in a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Curious, not one of the attack dogs without a brain in this blog could or would ever get elected -- funny how it's always the most pathetic who are the most critical.

of course, you rabid haters don't care about stupidity and self- servingly illogical and snotty comments from a Garza, even censorship, you're so desperate to find anything that goes low enough.

How did Antonio Jr. get into Princeton? I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it:

Jose Huizar, the mayor's clone, sits on the board at Princeton.

The bigger question is how the hell did Huizar get on the board at Princeton?

Remeber, Affirmative Action, where you were allowed to enter a school if you met the requirements or not. In addition, 'anchor babies" ar eligible for free educations, especially if funded by La Raza or Mecha. Hiter said "give me a child from seven years and he is mine for life"; thats why LAUSD and "Charter Schools' are funded by our goverment, not acknoweging that they are breeding a whole class of communists, socialists, etc.

hey 6:04(Parke)- survey usa is the most unreliable poll out there. there is no verification that the person responding by touch tone is an adult or a citizen, its just whoever answers the phone.

"Why would any official/staff go to them with a story ever again?"

Journalist should not be at official/staff's disposal. That would be special treatment.

10:34: You make no sense at all. The point is, "political" journalists should be objective and fair, focused on "politics" not tabloid slime. It is THEY and a lower form of readers like you guys, who want to put our officials at YOUR disposal. Electing someone does NOT mean you own and control them, as many of these biting fireants are now claiming re: AV AND others they dislike. Constituents have a right to express their views and criticize, but if they don't do it w/ civility and logic, the officials needn't listen. In fact, shouldn't listen: We should elect people based on a platform and let them use their own minds and judgments; if at the end of term we don't approve, vote them out.

But if a politician DOES blow with every public wind, that is when you have to worry. Every illiterate janitor and receptionist and doorman does NOT have a right to demand details of personal lives and boss their officials around; their "power" as always, is the ballot box, based on results/ agreement with the elected's views.

Well, absolutely correct! But, uh, what does being a janitor have to do with it? Did someone say all janitors love Villar??

I don't recall the LA Times ever apologizing for their decades of sloppy biased reporting. Kudos to you on your retraction.
