Showdown at the O.K. Corral

Home Depot Battle Comes Home To Sunland-Tujunga!

This Thursday, July 19, 4:30 PM, at Mt Gleason Middle School in Sunland, the Planning Commission will once again attempt to hear the appeal brought forth by Home Depot over the recent revocation of their building permits in Sunland-Tujunga, and the reclassification of their "project" as a "Project"
( yes, the capital "P" means all the difference in the world).

The Planning Commission tried to hear the appeal back in June in Van Nuys, but largely due to Home Depot bringing in 3 busloads of paid supporters, the Fire Marshall was forced to shut the Hearing down, and the Planning Commission was forced to reschedule the event at a larger venue.

The larger venue now happens to be a school auditorium in Sunland-Tujunga, the very community that the proposed Home Depot will affect!

How's that for a bit of irony?

Now for the burning questions..........

Will Home Depot repeat their same mistake and bus in more paid supporters, most of which,
have not a clue why they are there , except to pick up some cash?

Will Home Depot continue to try and play the race card against the community, simply because
local residents want the Specific Plan upheld, and need a general merchandise store, not a regional warehouse big box? Apparently, not wanting a Home Depot= Racist. Wanting good community planning=Racist. Upholding the Specific Plan=Racist.

Please visit www.stopracismca.com to see Home Depot's efforts in skewing the argument in this direction. This site was created by an "ex-employee" of Home Depot's PR firm, Dakota Communications, who left the company to fight alleged racism in S-T. Listen to my interview on John & Ken for the full story!

Oh the drama! Oh the astroturf!

Will the City enforce it's own laws? Will the Hearing be canceled again due to overcrowding?
Will the two lead attorneys for Home Depot ( who mysteriously left the Latham & Watkins law firm just recently) show up for the event?

Come watch a community, the City, and a very wealthy corporation in action on Thursday!

Believe me, it doesn't get better than this!

Joe sez:

Then stop posting here, Joe B. You only write about one issue. You have used this blog for propaganda and not once have you written anything relevant to L.A. politics. You are a leach on this blog.

Mayor Sam should have banished you when you had a "comment delete-a-thon" a few weeks ago, too bad he didn't have the guts. He was just "really upset."

Joe B. is a disgrace to No 2 Home Depot and the entire community of Sunland-Tujunga. He is responsible for the Do-It-Center scandal that caused Jim Alger to be banned from the Neighborhood Council system, he harassed and alienated Miner to the point where he shut down the old Foothills Forum, and he's now cussing at fellow community leaders and threatening them. Joe B. has less class than anyone at Home Depot, Dakota Communications, or Latham & Watkins.

Walter is getting so desperate that his last few radio commercials state "you don't have to live in L.A." to give him money.

We all know that OUT OF TOWN DEVELOPERS are the only people who care about the Mayoral race if they live outside L.A. Looks like Walter is courting their money. I wonder what he will have to give back in return, besides repealing rent control?

Walter, the "staffer" bit is getting old. Not everyone who disagrees with you on this blog works for the Mayor.

The "staffer" bit was discredited when you called "Ubrayj" a "staffer" after he opposed your views. Since Ubrayj02 is not anonymous and is the handle of Josef Bray-Ali, it was very easy to prove he is not a staffer. This is the thread in question.

Walter, please stop calling people "staffers" if they disagree with you here. The voters of Los Angeles expect a greater level of maturity in political debate.

Ah, the ignorance of the anonymous! Sunland-Tujunga is home to the Angeles National Forest, endangered species, native gardens and gardeners, remarkable air quality and the greatest percentage of open, undeveloped space of any L.A. community. It has embraced among its residents a Congressman and playwright, poets and artists, equestrians and naturalists, musicians, peacocks and llamas, and a famed grove of 700-year-old oaks. Its buildings include castles and whimsies, historic boulder structures and mid-century modern masterworks by a pantheon of architects. Sunland-Tujunga produced prize-winning peaches, citrus and grapes, and decades of Los Angeles' favorite olives, served as Hollywood playground and location, was the site of California's first gold strike and a few famous native Tongva archeological discoveries, and is famously associated with a poet laureate and a notorious thief. Founded as a utopian socialist colony, Tujunga is the birthplace of the historic preservation movement in Los Angeles, while Sunland harbored the significant counter-culture presence of the Hog Farm in the '60s. We are racially diverse and politically active; we have a history museum, an art center, a 4th of July parade, a watermelon festival; we name our landmarks after a nun who served the poor and orphaned, and a Mexican Jew who became patron saint of small houses. With a strong sense of our history, we head proudly into our future -- a future that doesn't include Home Depot.

So what, so-called M.Gandhi! All of LA is now a 3rd world toilet. Where are the nice areas? So, don't look down your snooty nose at another area that is trying to preserve some shreds of what was once a nice rural community. It's a losing battle with the likes of our sleazy mayor trying to crush in more development everywhere so we're all crammed in like sardines.

3rd world toilets need Home Depots for improvement! How else are the proles going to make their homes look less like shanties and more like super attenuated shanties with new paint!

Gandhi knows! He lived in a shanty! A Home Depot would have been a godsend during the Salt March! We could have taken carts instead of walking like dolts! Home Depot mobilizes! Then we could have painted instead of spinning thread!

The "artists" in their shanties in Sunland need it! They want to paint? Let them paint their shanties!

Namaste,
M. Gandhi.

From the la times 7/20/2007...

The meeting quickly turned incendiary after South Pasadena resident Dianna Perez, a supporter of the hardware mega-store, told the audience that the region had a history of racist acts, including cross burnings by the Ku Klux Klan. Perez accused one member of the audience of making comments about the immigration status of the largely Latino crowd who filed in wearing orange Home Depot T-shirts.

"The man next to me said, 'I should have brought my INS badge,' " Perez said.

The crowd erupted in fury over the Klan reference, with commission President Victor Sampson struggling to keep the meeting in order.

The new mail ads from Home Depot, someone needs to fire this up, the ad is lying and dishonest. They do not list the N. Hollywood Store and they do not list all of the hardware and lumber supply stores in this 6 mile Radius. Lies after lies. Why do you think Home Depot stock does fine? Cut, Cut, and more Cut backs, wages and staff. Also store cleaning and up keep (cut backs), all these will show a profit, but at the expense of there product and service.

If you see this mailer for home depot look at the circle and see how much mountains are the are and how much is actual residents. Now imagine this circle around the other home depots on the map and also on the bottom of the circle there is a home depot, now you can be assured that those residents will go to that home depot. This is leaving a small area that would go to this Home depot, Not worth it, actually we are doing home depots stockholders a favor by trying to stop them, this will save them a lot of money…

But when you have to lye like this mailer, something is wrong… (YES it is home depot)
