The Last Word on Antonio Villaraigosa

After Antonio Villaraigosa won the City election on March 3rd, I was a bit surprised that no media resources contacted me for a comment afterwards. I understand that the election wasn't all that exciting for them....a sitting Mayor with a 3 million dollar campaign war chest going up against nine other men who combined didn't have 10% of the Mayor's money, fame, or access to the media. Not much of a contest in their eyes, so they didn't bother to write about it. It was a sad commentary on the death of journalism in this country . In most stories about the election, the so-called "journalists" didn't even bother to mention the names of his opponents.

It's too bad they didn't call me after the campaign, because I had some choice comments for them. Words I had held back on and refrained from using during the campaign. They didn't bother to ask me, so I decided I will go the independent route and use what has become the REAL and most innovative media in this country... I will blog it myself!
Who could make a better comment on the race for Mayor? After all, I was one of the men running !

When I was being interviewed on the radio by Patt Morrison of KPCC, I called Villaraigosa "the most dangerous man in Southern California". I don't regret saying it, but I may have been inaccurate. He might not be number 1, but he's in the top 5. Patt Morrison stunned me for a moment when she asked if there was "anything the Mayor had done right ?". I have to admit I hadn't thought about the question a lot, but I quickly answered that I liked the Mayors strong support of Israel. However, I actually have doubts that the Mayors enthusiasm on the subject is genuine. When he was in the State legislature he represented a somewhat different area politically than he does now, and I am not convinced that Israel was ever high on his list of priorities. Me, on the other hand, I went to Israel long before I got involved in politics, and I even have an old photo of me with a full beard wearing an IDF t-shirt (and I'm not even Jewish) . I'm not sure I could say that Antonios support for Israel was ever legitimate and not politically motivated.

I'm not going to demonize the Mayor and call him "a traitor" like a certain candidate and some of his supporters continually did. Antonio Villaraigosa is a man like any other man. He has his good points and his bad points. He came from a very rough social background and overcame some physical ailments early in his life. He struggled in his pursuit of an education but eventually overcame that to became Mayor of Los Angeles. So I will give him a little credit for that. But allow me to repeat a quote of mine from the Sunland-Tujunga debates held by the Mayor Sam blog...

"I don't think the Mayor is smart. I don't think he is talented. But this man is crafty. He is a political animal. He is almost like an old-style mob boss."

That is how I see the Mayor. An untalented, but hard working overachiever.
A man who "worked" his union connections to eventually gain political control of a major city.
A man who knows the value of political favors and a man who knows how to collect from those in his debt.
However, I also see him as a man who could easily become a dictator if given half a chance. He has worked for organizations in the past like the ACLU, and the teachers unions, and the Democratic Party... all groups who say that they support freedom.....as long as you do exactly what THEY want you to do!

Most of my opposition to him has always been on a purely ideological basis.

His liberal policies of continually growing the government and finding new and creative ways to levy new taxes are ideologies that I find highly offensive. I feel that Antonio Villaraigosas "non-enforcement" policies towards illegal immigration only encourage more lawbreaking and make our City less safe for its citizens. His tireless support of illegal immigration often makes me question his loyalty to the United States. His membership in a racist organization called "MECHA" while a student in college says a great deal about his poor judgement and his lack of character. His choice to preside over a gay marriage ceremony (in order to gain political capital with the far left) offended me because, as a Catholic, our faith doesn't allow that, and he knows it. I will spare you the details about his personal life, but again, there he shows an almost pathological inability to be honest with anyone.

To many voters, he will always be known as the man who made the famous speech in 2006 where he said "We clean your toilets!!" These are not words I want any elected leader of mine saying at any time in his career. I want leaders I can be proud of...not ones that I am embarrassed of... (which is how I feel about the current Mayor).

In my opinion, Villaraigosa is only Mayor for one reason.

James Hahn fired Bernard Parks.

The African-American community (and many Parks supporters) turned on Hahn in the election and voted for the guy who finished as runner-up in 2001. Little did they know they were voting in a man with Socialist ideologies. An illegal immigration appeaser who would end up doing more damage to the African-American community than they could ever have imagined.

Yet somehow, the 15% of the people in this city who voted on March 3rd saw fit to return him to the Mayors Office. The only part of this I understand is that most voters didn't have any idea of who the other candidates were. If any of the other candidates had raised a million dollars to spend on their campaign, this election would have been very different.

Villaraigosa may not yet be finished doing damage to citizens here. He seeks to be elected Governor in 2010.
Laugh if you want, but it is a prospect that should frighten L.A. voters. He actually has a shot at winning.
Several Bay area politicians are going to splinter the vote there, and Villaraigosa may be the only big name in Southern California to seek the job. He could take the Democratic Party nomination with a small plurality. After that, the voters of The Peoples Republic of California will do as they are told and put him in Sacramento.

God help us all.

C'est la vie, Walter

Back in the day

Having lost for Mayor after running for the last five years, it appears that rumors that former candidate Walter Moore would move to France if he were not elected Mayor may very well be true. From Moore's website:

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate those of you who contributed your time and/or money to trying to save this City. We didn’t replace Villaraigosa, but we did defeat Measures B and E.
And if anyone wants to buy a nice house in Carthay Circle for $1.1 million, let me know, will you?

It's easy to say good riddance but I have made it clear why Walter - who had a lot of potential and did manage to catch the attention of a Dodger stadium size crowd of Angelenos - was not the candidate to upset Villaraigosa and right the course of LA government.

At an election night event I attended I spoke with someone who related to me that when Walter was shown phone bank calling sheets he was mystified and thought it might be something he could use. As far as we know, he didn't.

Walter ran a vanity campaign that ultimately gave a lot of good people false hope. He squandered his hard earned campaign funds on flyers printed at Kinkos, hats, bumper stickers and on radio ads on stations that were already giving him extensive free media. He never hired a consultant, someone who could run a further fundraising operation, phone banking efforts, precinct walking and all the things that would have earned Walter the extra 13,000 votes he would have needed to push Villaraigosa into a runoff. Worse, Walter allowed his campaign to dip into racially tinged rhetoric that pushes the envelope of division and which would never fly in multi-cultural Los Angeles. Everything else Walter was talking about could have sold and sold big.

With Walter out of the picture the challenge for Los Angeles is to identify who is that good government, politically moderate, dynamic leader focused on transparency, accountability and opportunity for all Angelenos - and who has a respect for the racial, ethnic, religous and socio-economic diversity of the city (maybe some neighborhoods want low rise but others want an urban landsacape - we can do this!). At this point, I have no idea.

But maybe soon that person will emerge.

Friends Don't Let Friends Vote for Walter Moore

It is with disappointment I write this but I can't vote for Walter Moore for Mayor.

And I would urge you not to do so either.

When Walter Moore first announced he would run again following his loss in 2005 I was enthusiastic about his campaign and chances and made a contribution to his campaign. However over time as I've gotten to know Moore better and watch his campaign I've found that he does not have the temperament nor personality to be in elected office and hence I can not support him.

Not that Antonio Villaraigosa or just about anyone else in politics do either, but as I've pointed out before the definition of insanity is repeating the same mistakes over and over again but expecting different results.

There are some very key reasons why I can not support Walter Moore, all of which lead to why I can not see him as being an effective Mayor. Some of them are based on personal experience and you will have to take it for what it's worth. Some it's based on the observations of others, which I can not guarantee are accurate or not, but I trust the individuals who have shared the information with me. The rest of it's based on items that have been reported on blogs or in the media.

Let us start.

First off I find Moore to be arrogant. Some have noted this in his performance in debates. He's been known to make snide remarks about his opponents while they were speaking. Snide remarks may be fine for bloggers but not for candidates seeking to curry favor. I can also speak to Moore's arrogance with at least one personal experience. You may remember back in August when I reported on a little seen City Council agenda item that had the City investing a few million dollars on a book fair in Mexico. My story caught the attention of talk radio and the ire of some Council members. Moore ran the story in his e-blast without attributing it to Mayor Sam. I approached Moore about this and he was not apologetic and his response was "Don't worry Doug (McIntyre) and Kevin (James) will give you credit." After a few more mails exchanged, Moore pathetically sent out another email blast and tried to kiss up. Whatever.

I also think that Moore is selfish. Now he wouldn't be the first nor last politician to grace that description but when you're an upstart, alternative politician seeking to build a movement you need all the friends you can get. Here's one example. Last summer I created a web page encouraging former Daily News editor Ron Kaye to run for City Controller. At the time Moore was working to encourage as many people as possible to run for city offices. I had asked Moore if he would be kind enough to mention my website in his next email blast. After all, I had given Moore hundreds of pages of digital ink here at Mayor Sam and even let him blog here, creating a forum for his views in the early days of his campaign. You would think a little reciprocity would be nice. Moore responded back to me "No can do," stating that his blasts were focused on him and him alone. That was one of the first times I began to suspect Moore was not creating a movement to take back the city but a movement based on Moore himself. How is that any alternative to Villaraigosa?

Moore is self-absorbed and petty. Back in January I had noticed that Moore had not been posting at his campaign blog for a few weeks and I had not received one of his campaign email blasts in some time. Somewhat concerned, I contacted Walter to see if he was okay and how the campaign was going. Walter replied back to me that because he had assumed I was supporting Zuma Dogg for Mayor (something that I had yet to announce one way or the other) he stopped sending me his email blast. I explained to Walter that candidates who I had actually already said I was not supporting - such as Wendy Greuel and Carmen Trutanich - regularly sent me campaign press releases, announcements, etc. I found Moore's actions and comments childish.

Moore appears to have a problem with the diversity of Los Angeles. Many of us who are closed border and immigration reform advocates don't fall into the anti-immigrant rhetoric of many of the supporters of Moore's. Blogger Debbie Lopez aptly notes her experience at a Moore campaign rally where she saw such fervor. It's easy to call a person racist and as one who has been the target of those charges myself, I don't toss that epithet lightly. I don't allege that Moore himself is a racist but his comments and actions are tinged with a lack of respect for LA's cultural cacophony. Advocating for reform to issues of illegal immigration does not mean we have to not take joy at the culture brought to our city by immigrants. On the other hand Moore finds trouble with Spanish radio stations. Even more troubling is his desire to make Los Angeles an "American city" that apparently means banning taco stands and TV novelas on Spanish language TV, something many gringos take a guilty pleasure in. Even when asked to offer a greeting to the Spanish speaking viewers of our internet debate, unlike all of the other candidates, Moore refused, offering instead to speak in French. Maybe a funny joke, but again, a sign of disrespect.

I find Moore to be a poor decision-maker. First lets start off with how, according to current LA City Ethics Commission records, he has spent the nearly $300,000 he collected in both private contributions and taxpayer funded public campaign financing.on things like campaign hats, bumper stickers, yard signs, fliers and radio advertising. For sure, these are all things typically associated with campaigns. But anyone who has worked on campaigns knows that getting elected requires getting out the vote. In his filings, I see nothing with respect to hiring a consultant to manage get out the vote efforts, setting up a phone banking operation or anything related to those mission critical campaign items. A campaign office, bumper stickers, rallies, radio and TV commercials are great things to stoke a candidate's ego but they are not the most important part of getting out the vote. We know Mayor Villaraigosa has troops out there this weekend. They may motivate Moore's base but his base isn't sufficient enough to get him elected. There is no indication on Moore's wesbite of phonebanking or precinct walking activities, indeed the only activity I see over the weekend was an hour and half long event at Moore's office where he handed out fliers to fans. All of this leads me to question if Moore is serious about winning. I believe he has wasted significant resources and significant opportunity. Radio talk show host Kevin James who I have great respect for makes the point that Walter is the only candidate who got out early raising money. Fair enough. But how Walter has spent the money raises serious concerns for this blogger and gives me pause as to what kind of manager Moore would be.

There are a number of disturbing things many have told me with respect to their interaction with Walter. But because these are sometimes third party accounts and their side of the story I won't go into them specifically here. I feel my own experiences and that which is already documented are sufficient cause to not give Walter Moore my vote.

I know there are many people who have strong convictions as to many of the issues Walter Moore has discussed during the campaign. I would suggest you review the record and philosophy of candidates such as Zuma Dogg, David Hernandez and Phil Jennerjahn who all express similar viewpoints to Moore on the important issues but bring different qualities to the race.

It's not easy to have to admit I was wrong about Walter and I know that many who support me will be upset. That being said I had to speak my mind. The most important thing is that everyone vote!

Of Dying Fishwraps and the Future

The Former Fishwrap of Record AKA THE OLD GRAY HAG ON SPRING STREET thinks Joseph Mailander of Street Hassle is laughing when he takes them to task for their abyssmal election coverage this season.  In reality, Joseph is crying.for the Times that was and the Times that could have been.  In the meantime, like Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, the Times is waiting for it's close up that will never ever come again.

Speaking of the Times that could have been and speaking of Joseph Mailander, check out an excellent op-ed piece that could have been, In LA Mayor's Race, Democracy Lost.  It pretty much sums up why people are simultaneously turned off to politics and local fishwraps.

Still speaking of dying fishwraps, tech writer Leo Laporte on his radio show this morning discussed the rapid termination of local newspapers.  A huge shot across their bows was the debut of Craig's List, an online source for classified ads that are free or nearly free, and which made the wants pretty much go the way of the phone book.  Couple that major loss of revenue with slanted coverage and the wraps are soon toast.  One option - Leo suggests that the New York Times save itself from certain death by cutting the print edition and giving a free Kindle to paying digitial subcribers.  The Kindle is the quarter inch thick "e-paper" wireless internet device produced by Amazon.com that allows users to read digital content without a computer.

Saltsburg Responds to Moore and Rubin Debate Threats

BREAKING NEWS: We have received word that mayoral candidates Walter Moore and Craig X Rubin have allegedly joined together to ask that fellow candidate David "Zuma Dogg" Saltsburg be barred from a candidates forum held this afternoon at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. This is in response to allegations from Rubin that Saltsburg made death threats against Rubin; allegations that Saltsburg has denied.

Via a third party, we received the following email sent by Rubin:

"I would appreciate you all helping me to make sure that Zuma, who is no longer a viable candidate (not that you all ever thought he was to begin with), stays out of the remaining debates by unanimous consent rather than me alone. I think Walter will be on this, but if not I will do it alone."

We then contacted Saltsburg for his reaction, contained in the clip below. Speaking directly from the Fonda a few moments ago, Saltsburg says he intends to participate in the forum and that he "does not answer" to Moore nor Rubin.

The Anyone But Antonio Meme

The Mayor and his minions have launched a "campaign" that is almost comical in it's lies, distortions and mistruths when it comes to representing his record over the last four years (or would that be acutally the 161 days he actually worked on City business?).

If you've read this blog you're familiar with all his mis-doings from Mirthala to toilets to more serious matters like the fiscal health of the city.  You know how big of a kleptocracy Los Angeles has become. So its not a surprise that blogs beyond this one are starting to call for rejection of this 11% mayor.

Not known for being a radical MetBlogs' David Markland gets the ball rolling asking voters to "head to the polls March 3rd and vote for anyone BUT Antonio."  Next Joseph Mailander at Street Hassle picks it up hat tipping to Markland and saying that the Mayor and his handlers have "denied democracy to Los Angeles" this election season.  Fishbowl LA is next to chime in offering that Markland's "reasoning is sound."

So who's next?

Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Sunday

The LA Times has given a half-hearted endorsment of Mayor Villaraigosa.  Of course, no one is surprised by this.  In the meantime Villaraigosa's strategy is as if there is no election, telling Rick Orlov
"I don't take umbrage that people want me to debate," Villaraigosa said. "What I say is judge me by what I've done. I'm going to knock on doors and talk to voters."

Nearly $3 million in special interest money has gone to the campaigns of City Controller candidate Wendy Greuel and City Attorney hopeful Jack Weiss.  On the other hand, Greuel's nearest competitor Nick Patsaouras has raised just over $100,000. Better walk those precincts and make those calls Nick.

MetBlogs notes that Mayor Villaraigosa, Tom LeBong and Richard AlarcCON all seem to be inspired by rock legend Huey Lewis in photos on their websites.

Measure B is getting most of the attention this election season but Measure E is yet another scam by the politicians to divert your money to people who can do something for them.  Claiming that LA needs to bring business to the City - which it does - LA's leaders want to direct big chunks of your tax money to certain businesses who agree to locate here.  Council Member Wendy "I never saw a giveaway I didn't like" Greuel is of course supporting this measure and once again spouting mistruths claiming that nearby cities like Burbank do this and gave big bucks to Yahoo to locate in that city.  Not true says Burbank City Manager Michael Flad who said not one dime was given to Yahoo, "We don't try to bribe people to come to Burbank . We find ways to encourage businesses, not buy them off."  It's not a lack of corporate welfare that drives business out of LA, its the City's business unfriendly regulatory environment, high crime and high taxes - as well as a well developed NIMBY contigent.

The Daily News has come out against both Measures B and E.  In their editorial the paper points out that both shady propositions would despite their best intentions "unnecessarily change the City Charter with vague and restrictive requirements that could saddle Angelenos with bad policy for decades to come."

Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Friday

The candidates for Mayor were asked if they support the vision for a "subway to the sea."  Candidate Carlos Alvarez does as well as subways to everywhere else.  Because he rode the subway in London, Phil Jennerjahn is surprisingly for this boondoggle as - no surprise - is Mayor Villaraigosa.  Walter Moore and David Hernandez correctly note the fiscal irresponsibility of the project and David "Zuma Dogg" Saltsburg drives it home saying the project consumes "a lot of money, time and hope tied up for something that may or may not even happen for 30 years."

The Planning Commission has delayed plans to re-write the City's billboard laws, changes that could have a chilling effect on free speech in Los Angeles.  In the meantime while billboard hysteria reaches a fever pitch during the City's primary elections, a recent poll bears out what I suspected - that most folks don't care and aren't even aware of the fight with 47% of Angelenos saying the advertisments are attractive.  Among Hispanics, the fastest growing segment of LA residents there is a near total lack of interest in the issue, with only three percent of that demographic saying the issue had any relevancy to their lives. That being said the billboard NIMBYS are loud and wicked - and voter apathy concentrates their venom - so local politicians cross them at their own peril.

How many DWP employees does it take to pass out a lightbulb? About $3 million worth.  Each of you will get free energy-saving CFL lightbulbs and the DWP will personally deliver them to your home.  I guess some genius at the DWP didn't figure out it would be far more cost effective to include a coupon in ratepayers' bills.  Question: Will they deliver light bulbs to the homeless? Yet another reason - DWP poor decisions - Vote No on B!

Saying that he is "a fiscal reformer with the energy and know how to clean up the financial mismanagement at City Hall, cut government waste and bring more accountability to city departments," former Los Angeles City Controller Rick Tuttle endorsed Fifth District Council Candidate Ron Galperin

About 400 entertainment industry jobs in the Los Angeles area will be lost in 2009 according to a research report released by the he Los Angeles Economic Development Corp.  The LAEDC's Jack Kyser - Walter Moore's second favorite economist - said the industry "faces challenges on many fronts."

Is David Saltsburg The Next Mayor?

I have to say an excellent interview on Good Day LA of  Zuma Dogg - well it was actually David Saltsburg who showed up - but it was still Zuma.

You can't buy coverage this valuable.  This is significant for Zuma's campaign.  Check out the two reports at Fox 11's Website or Zuma's site.

Walter Moore isn't going to like this.
