Ana Cubas "Endorsement Lump of Coal" via SEIU Local 99
Sternburger is reporting SEIU Local 99 members were recruited to attend the recent town hall endorsements who would tend to vote for the candidates the union wanted to endorse, the email from sternburger has been included below with additional highlighting. This would explain how the members choice Ana Cubas was not the endorsed winner, and members coaxed by executive board members and organizers in all the locals pushed hard for Curren Price the obvious push came when the members of Local 99 before announcing their choice walked out of the general meeting and did not participate, preventing an endorsement for Cubas. We have been told that their choice clearly was Ana Cubas the experienced former Chief of Staff for our friend Jose Huizar the honorable councilman from the 14th district. However they could not make that vote and were told they had to play politics and not cast that vote.
...... and judging from the email, Ana was the recipient of an endorsement lump of coal. So sad that Ana's quest for status will end in March (HaHa!!)

Christmas Getaway Briefs Dump on the Los Angeles Political Machine for Friday
TRUTANICH WITH 23 POINT LEAD December 20th, 2012 HAPPY HOLIDAYS!The clock is ticking - Christmas is just around the corner and so is New Year’s. Time to celebrate! And the reelection campaign for City Attorney Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich is doing just that – celebrating! A survey commissioned by the campaign, testing 500 likely voters citywide, shows Trutanich with a 42-19 percent lead over his rival, Assemblyman Michael Feuer. Two other candidates in the race get 8 percent each.Talk about a reason to celebrate! Rick Taylor, Trutanich’s chief reelection strategist, was beside himself. “This poll is great news,” said Taylor. “It shows Nuch has a clear path to victory. With the right amount of financial resources the city attorney is headed for the winner’s circle, and the residents of Los Angeles will be the real victors.”

Garcetti has slight lead in latest Mayoral Poll
Eric Garcetti 22 Wendy Greuel 19 Jan Perry 8 Kevin James 5 Emanuel Pleitez 1
Undecided 44
Margin of error: +/- 4 Sample size: 500 likely voters.
With 44% undecided and as the "Old Gray Collectivist Hag on Spring Street" highlights today in its print edition, all four of the major campaigns are "coalition builders in progress", as they seek to create the political formula that will garner a top-two finish in the March Election. For Councilman Garcetti, that effort took him into fellow candidate Emanuel Pleitez's El Sereno hood for a "meet and greet" at the Antigua Bread Store. Judging from the photographs below and from eyewitnesses accounts, the former City Council President was warmly received by prominent members of the largely-Latino community.

"MEAT" works "The City Maven" on the behalf of CD 13 Candidate John Choi

Its critical that many people (the right people) read this - since there are many political hurdles we have to navigate and getting this piece of critical information out - might slow some people down from even entering the race.
thanks!
Its nice to know that a supposed objective reporter, is allegedly an willing enabler of "MEAT's and his political bosses agenda. Plus, the fact that the story was intended to impact other candidates from entering the race, qualifies the missive as an example of bias agenda journalism. But then it was the "enabling Maven" who help spearhead the "MEAT political rehabilitation tour", after his infamous email and termination from the CD 14 City Councilman Jose Huizar reelection campaign.
But knowing MEAT's documented history of turning sure victories, into stunning defeats (think Measure B), then it should be no surprise that hardly anyone has dropped out, despite the strong arm tactics of the Choi Campaign.

Morning Briehs on the Los Angeles Political Machine for Tuesday
James told the Weekly the question shows that she thinks of him as a threat. "Her stretch to apply it in the debate showed desperation," he said.
The other candidates usually ignore James -- who routinely accuses them of being corrupt -- but Greuel decided it was high time to go after him.
"No one has been talking about the GOP elephant in the room," Shallman said. "Kevin James is a Tea Party, right-wing radical who is a shock-jock radio guy. The issue with Kevin James is his recklessness. If you're running for mayor, you want to know that the person who has his hand on the wheel is in firm control of the facts and can handle a crisis without doing crazy things."
Strange, the "Private Citizen/Political Consultant" handles alleged monetary crisis in his supposed two consultant household, by doing business (allegedly) with whom?

Villaraigosa Schedules Gun Buyback: But They Don't Work
Mine is this big! |
In the wake of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, as those impacted mourn and experience incredible pain, and the rest of the nation weeps with them, leave it to glad handing politicians try to exploit the issue for the latest gain.
Locally, we hear word that our own Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, is moving up a planned gun buyback program to the day after Christmas.
We all know about these programs. Those with guns are encouraged to bring them to some location in exchange for cash, Nikes, movie tickets, lap dances, whatever is enticing to the gun owning public.
The problem is, like gun control, they don't work to reduce gun violence. We have seen hundreds of these events around the country and the level of violence has yet to reduce
From Wikipedia:
Gun "buy-back" programs are a strategy aimed at influencing the firearms market by taking guns "off the streets". Gun "buy-back" programs have been shown to be ineffective, with the National Academy of Sciences citing theory underlying these programs as "badly flawed." Guns surrendered tend to be those least likely to be involved in crime, such as old, malfunctioning guns with little resale value, muzzleloading or other blackpowder guns, antiques chambered for obsolete cartridges that are no longer commercially manufactured or sold, or guns that individuals inherit but have little value in possessing. Other limitations of gun "buy-back" programs include the fact that it is relatively easy to obtain gun replacements, often of better guns than were relinquished in the "buy-back." Also, the number of handguns used in crime (approximately 7,500 per year) is very small compared to the approximately 70 million handguns in the United States (i.e., 0.011%).

In the wake of her "groundbreaking endorsements" from the likes of Senator Barbara Boxer, Assembly Speaker John Perez, CD 14 City Councilman Jose Huizar and fundraisers hosted by the connected wind energy speculator Ari Swiller, we are honor to bestow the moniker of “Villar Greuel” on the formerly known “Valley Greuel”.
In Saturday’s debate, the newly bestowed “Villar Greuel”, showed that she shares the same opportunist proclivities as the former Tony Villar of City Terrace, by her attack on supposed “Radical Right-Wing Radio Host” and fellow mayoral candidate Kevin James.
The “Villar Greuel’s” planned attack on James may prove costly in more way than one. First, when your campaign consultant is none other than “Private Citizen/ Political Consultant" Johns Shallman, the cost of planning an attack on your debate opponent, is likely to be way above the market rate. Second, unlike other consultants who are true to their political beliefs, Shallman (or was it his wife?) is not above making seven-figures bank, from the likes of I.E. group “ED Voice”, who had connections with the supposed “Radical Right Wing” Walton Family and the Tea Party.
The “Villar Greuel” should also remember that many in the San Fernando Valley’s CD 2 will remember her attempt to carpetbag Chris Essel into her former City Council seat. CD 2 constituents may also remember who appointed Chris Essel to the head of the defunct CRA LA. None other than the “Villar Greuel‘s” namesake and out-going Mayor Antonio Villar.

** What would a Monday be without the Daily News Rick Orlov's "Tipoff Column", where you can find out what side the various Los Angeles politicos will take, in regards to the proposed sale tax hike?

Morning Briefs on the Los Angeles Political Machine for Wednesday
On the subject of numbers (with decimal point) and the looming end (politically), Mayor Antonio Villar’s “alleged past Getty House guest”/ Board of Public Works President Andrea AlarCON, has been offered a Plea Deal by the San Bernardino County District Attorney.
The daughter of indicted CD 7/2 City Councilman Richard “Zorro Marxist” AlarCON, can avoid jail time in exchange for pleading guilty to one count each of DUI and Child Endangerment. If she chooses to go to trial, chances are good that jail time would result from multiple guilty verdicts. The fact that she was driving down treacherous Hwy.18 while impaired, with a child in the car, will not go ever well with a local jury (plus being a Los Angeles public official won’t help either).
Then considering that the hard-partying Georgetown Grad’s blood alcohol content came in at .18, this would be the right time for AlarCON to act contrite, take full accountability for her actions (in both the San Bernardino and City Hall episodes) and resign.
** City of Los Angeles CAO Miguel Santana may want to update his resume. Judging from the comments of various union heads, Santana may be the first casualty of a union-back candidate win the 2013 Mayoral Contest.
** One must wonder if Mayor Antonio Villar is still a proud progressive considering that thousands of his former fellow-traveling brothers and sisters, have signed a petition requesting the City Terrace native resign from the “Fix this Debt Organization”
** Surprise, surprise City Councilman Jose Huizar is fined again by the Ethics Commission ($10,000) for campaign violations from his 2011 Re-election Campaign. As Attorney Stephen Kaufman prepares the invoice for setting up another legal defense fund to pay off this latest ethical breach. We suggest that the Princeton Graduate set up an old city parking meter in front of his each district office for donations ( to later spend on fine dining).
** As the mayoral candidates prep for a Thursday night candidate forum where gangs issues will be discussed, Mayor Sam will post an exclusive on an alleged cover-up from this summer’s Summer Night Lights Program with embarrassing implications for Mayor Villar’s GRYD Program

A Mayor Sam PSA on Proper Reporting Protocols when involved in crash with a City Councilman
Once the two men got out of their cars, Huizar hailed a passing ambulance and offered to pay for the damage but insisted that there was no need for police to be involved, the attorney said.Guizar said Ceja pointed out to Huizar that a government vehicle was involved. Huizar then said he would call a friend at the LAPD's Hollenbeck Division station, according to the attorney. Soon afterward, Huizar told Ceja that police had informed him that the matter could be handled without a report, Guizar said."My client said, 'No I insist. I have injuries and I insist on a police report,'" Guizar said.Ceja then called the LAPD himself, Guizar said, telling an officer at Hollenbeck that he wanted both an accident report and a sobriety test for Huizar. When officers showed up, they said they did not have the equipment to administer the test, the attorney said. Huizar sat in a police car at the accident scene until after 9 p.m. and was not tested until he was taken to a police station, Guizar said.
That's strange, number one on the Accident Reporting Instructions, states that you are to notify LAPD regarding ALL cases involving damage to a city vehicle. If the information from Mr. Ceja is true, Councilman Huizar and the unidentified Hollenbeck LAPD officer reference by the councilman, were in major violation of city policy and for what reason? Krekorian and Historic Tacos
You may remember the controversy where Krekorian's regular column in hyper-local news blog, Studio City Patch, was demoted from featured status because of revelations that the question and answer format feature (ghostwritten by Krekorian Communications Director Jeremy Oberstein) had created fake constituents who were submitting comments to the Councilman to respond too.
Later, we reported on a sinkhole in the NoHo Arts District in CD2 that was left to sit simply guarded by pylons and repairs were not arranged until I had to be really annoying and cause a stink about it.
Now, the closure of a beloved community icon, Henry's Tacos, may be partially blamed on Krekorian.
The Studio City taco stand has operated on the corner of Moorpark and Tujunga for 51 years. In fact, I remember passing by there every day as my mother drove me to my nursery school on Moorpark and Colfax. The third generation owner has been locked in a struggle with the landowner who reportedly has some development plans for the site. Unable to secure a long term lease, she turned to the community to seek designation of the 1960s style roadside stand as a cultural-historic landmark.
The City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission did indeed, by a unanimous vote, find the business and structure to be historic and recommended to the full City Council that such status be conferred. Next step would be that Krekorian, as the Council Member for the location where the business sits, would shepherd the Commission's recommendation through Council.
According to Oberstein, and other press reports, the application was heard before the Council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee. Krekorian asked the PLUM Committee to postpone the application pending the land owner and Henry's owner working out a reasonable lease arrangement. That was earlier this year and from that point, no further action was taken by Krekorian nor PLUM.
Lacking the Cultural Landmark designation, and following the land owner not coming to terms with Henry's or potential buyers (some of whom who reportedly agreed to all of the landlord's conditions), the owner of Henry's, Janis Hood (granddaughter of the founder), opted to shutter the business.
Once that went public, the ire of some segments of the community turned to Krekorian for the failure of the stand to gain the monument status. A remark one reader made to me was that it was a "pocket veto" by Krekorian of the status.
We spoke with Oberstein who said much of what had been written or said was "misinformation." "The challenge that Henry’s has faced is due to a private business relationship; it is not at all due to the status of the City’s historical designation process," Oberstein wrote me.
Following this, Oberstein released a statement from Council Member Krekorian, which basically reiterated his view that this was a private matter and that Krekorian was waiting on the two parties to reach agreement. Krekorian stated that he never heard back from either party and that he first learned of the closing from a Facebook post.
I asked Oberstein what would the normal procedure be in handling a matter like this. If indeed the Council Office had not heard from the parties would Krekorian's staff reach out to them for an update? I didn't so much get a direct answer as a repeat of their position that they had never heard from either party.
At the same time, Krekorian may have felt sensitivity that some were going to accuse him of doing the developer's bidding. Krekorian's statement included "I also feel that I must make clear that suggestions by some that I have “other plans” for the property are simply false." The Council Member states he is not aware of any plans for the property and that the owner has not sough any zoning changes, building permits, etc.
In the meantime, a number of Hollywood celebrities are ralliyng to try and save Henry's.
Bottom line: While the issues here are complex, and Krekorian is likely correct that the cultural status alone would not save Henry's, it does appear that a good amount of internal bungling may have led to perceptions of Krekorian's intent for the property and perceptions he and his staff will need to spend quite a bit of precious time reversing. Perhaps an initial follow up call to the parties early on would have saved the Council Member quite a bit of trouble.

BIG BROTHER FOR BLOGGERS?: Some of the keyboardists who weigh in with political postings on local blogs could be getting more attention than they’ve bargained for. Word on the street says that a local political pro (Uli ?) with sufficient technical training to have hacker skills regularly plumbs cyberspace for clues on who’s posting what on which blogs…SATURDAYS IN CD 14: There seems to be more than one way to hunt a blogger. Reliable sources say that Ana Cubas, chief of staff for City Councilmember Jose Huizar, spent a recent Saturday morning calling around the 14th District to accuse constituents of posting items from this column in the blogosphere. Memo to Cubas: Feel free to give a call if you have anything to say about reports in this space—you’ll find contact information at the end of column. Meanwhile, it’s been several weeks and still no word back on calls seeking comment about the item that started this whole go-round—a report from reliable sources that Internal Revenue Service (IRS) investigators are looking into Huizar’s spending habits…
Seems like two days ago Ana.
** We hear a hot rumor that CD 4 City Councilman Tom LaBonge was up to his old buffoonery ways this past Saturday at LAPD Hollywood Division's toy giveaway. The kids and parents in line were force to wait as the "reigning clowncil buffoon" demanded that all the officers present, gather with him for a photo op. Then the CD 4 Buffoon had the gall to accuse Mayoral Candidate Kevin James of electioneering for the mere act of partaking in an event, that he was part of last year. (** eyewitness account on LaBonge's action in the comment section).
** Its a Monday and time for another "Tipoff Column" from the elder City Hall Beat Writer Rick Orlov. The trio of topics this week include the new mane/look of Mayoral Candidate Wendy "The Valley Greuel", the departure of Pat McOsker as President of UFLAC (will Mayor Villar send his best wishes?) and Mayor Villar's symbolic, excellent South American Trade Trip Adventures.
** Lets give credit for the Old Gray Collectivist Hag on Spring Street roaming (the increasing deserted halls of the former fishwrap of record) local political columnist Jim Newton, for stumbling into the issue of Mayor Antonio Villar's looming and growing LAPD overtime debt, that will be past on to the next mayor.

Outtakes from CD 14 Special Report: "Huizzy's $500,000+ Driving Misadventure"
BOYLE HEIGHTS, Calif. (KTLA) -- L.A. City Councilman Jose Huizar was given a sobriety test -- which he passed -- after being involved in a three-car crash Thursday night.
Sky5 was overhead after the crash was reported around 7 p.m. at 1st Street and Boyle Avenue, near his home in Boyle Heights.
"I can confirm that three cars were involved and the Councilmember was given a breathalyzer test, which registered a zero," Huizar spokesman Rick Coca said in a statement.
At the scene, Huizar's Toyota Highlander was parked behind a Saturn, which had major damage on the trunk.
One person at the scene complained of injuries and was examined by paramedics, but not taken to a hospital.
From "The City Maven" at KPCC ...............
The LAPD could not provide any immediate details on the vehicles, but both the Los Angeles Times and KTLA reported that a Saturn was struck from behind by a Toyota Highland hybrid, which was registered to the councilman’s office. A spokesman for Huizar could not immediately confirm whether the Toyota was a city-owned vehicle.
Aggregating the information from the two media stories above, we can surmise that the Princeton Graduate whacked the Saturn at a high rate of speed, alcohol was not supposedly a contributing factor and for some reason, CD 14 staff were being coy on whether the Highlander was city-owned, why? As in most CD 14 political dramas, there is always sub plots to every novella. Follow along our bloggin timeline.
From our Mayor Sam Exclusive ................
Mayor Sam has obtain this email that invites various city council staffers to a Happy Hour Birthday Party for CD 14 City Council Jose Huizar Staffer Erick Martell ( started at 5:30 P.M.), yesterday evening at the The Edison. It is very conceivable that Councilman Huizar would of attended this Birthday Party for one of his longer serving staffers, then upon leaving, make his way eastbound on First Street, homeward bound, where he was later involved in a three car accident near First and Boyle. We should note again that Councilman Huizar was not supposedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, according to his spokesperson Rick Coca
LA Times David Zahniser picks up the details from his exclusive report on the $500,000 Claim, which broke in Saturday's print edition ...........
A former Huntington Park police officer has filed a $500,000 legal claim against the city of Los Angeles, saying he suffered "serious multiple physical injuries" after his car was hit from behind by a city-owned SUV driven by City Councilman Jose Huizar.David Ceja, 49, said his 2002 Saturn was struck by Huizar's 2008 Toyota Highlander on 1st Street in Boyle Heights in October. Humberto Guizar, Ceja's attorney, said that in the minutes after the accident, Huizar repeatedly asked that the matter be handled without alerting the Los Angeles Police Department.Once officers showed up, they waited at least two and a half hours to give Huizar a blood-alcohol test, Guizar said. Huizar, 44, was detained that night and blew a zero on his breathalyzer test, according to police and the councilman's office.
David Ceja describing the specifics of the accident via his attorney Humberto Guizar .............
According to Guizar, the crash occurred at around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 near the 101 Freeway onramp.
Holy CLARTSgate! Where do we start with the questions? Lets try by following a timeline.
** First, did Councilman Huizar attend the Happy Hour Birthday Party for staffer Erick Martell prior to driving home?
** Second, if Councilman Huizar attended the party, did he have a drink or drinks before leaving?
** Third, if Councilman Huizar did have a drink or drinks, why did his "supposed designated driver" staffer George Esparza (who's name is on email invite), not drive him home? Maybe the councilman should keep Michael "MEAT" Trujillo on standby, considering his past driving chores for Mayor Antonio Villar?
** Fourth, why did Councilman Huizar not want to follow city protocols for accidents in city-owned vehicles, that all employees must follow? ** Did Huizar's city-owned Highlander carry an accident report package in its glove compartment?
** Fifth, why did Councilman Huizar not want LAPD (or especially Hollenbeck officers) notify of the accident (maybe this past episode may still influence Hollenbeck officer's opinion of the CD 14 rep)?
** Sixth, why was Councilman Huizar allowed to sit for two-plus hours before being given a sobriety test? When responding officers realized that they did not have the proper equipment, how come they did not make the less than a mile drive to the station promptly?
** Seventh, why was CD 14 staff coy in disclosing whether the vehicle that Councilman Huizar was driving, was city-owned?
** Eighth, will the Hollenbeck Community Police Advisory Board (CPAB) question Hollenbeck and top LAPD brass on whether Councilman Huizar was given special treatment? Considering all the new liquor licenses that the Princeton Graduate has approved in recent years and the subsequent number of DUIs associated with them, the handling of the Huizar accident merits review by an outside, objective entity (LAPD Inspector General?).
** Ninth, will the City Attorney and LAPD review the reporting protocols for elected officials involved in accidents with city-owned vehicles?
** Lastly, if Councilman Huizar is found to have attempted to cover up an episode of nefarious behavior involving this likely costly crash, will CD 14 voters hold him accountable in 2015?
