Tony Villar Dumps Trash on You

Its getting to be a near annual event - where an LA Mayor decides to up the trash tax.

In 2005, Mayor Poopy was going to do it before Tony Villar booted him out of office. In 2006, when city revenues increased $700 million, the city came back to you charge you for more trash money. They told you it was for more cops - but Walter Moore found out that wasn't true.

In the last two years, trash fees for homeowners and renters have gone from $11 to $26 and now they may go to $38 per month.

Instead of raising trash fees, how about outsourcing the whole operation and saving even more money than you'd earn by raising taxes. Trash collecting is not supposed to be a union, career job. Its a low skilled job for people with low skills. If they want a career wage, go get some education.

The only thing about as regular as raising trash fees is raising the Mayor and Council's salaries. But you people sit back and do nothing, especially many of those clueless ninnies on Neighborhood Councils who say "Oh we can't challenge the city - they'll take away our funding to plant trees!"

They told they had to pass the illegal, shady phone tax which a bunch of clueless little old ladies voted for in droves - because they needed more money. You thought that would be it, but Tony Villar and the 15 Clowncil Members will be back for even more. Trash fees, other fees, hidden taxes, water increases, etc.

And the big kahuna is coming - as Zuma Dogg and I have both been telling you for months - the city personal income tax better known as the "occupational license fee." (Because when is a tax not a tax? When it's a fee.)

They can out with this article today:

LA Residents Ask Los Angeles City Council to RESPECT THE CHARTER Regarding DWP Rate Increases

You would have thought that Antonio Villaraigosa, of all people, would respect the City Charter. But unfortunately, the Mayor, along with DWP, is pressuring the City Council Members to approve the Power Reliability pass thru and the multi year Rate Increase without the benefit of the Charter mandated IEA Survey.

I gotta stop posting the same headline on my stories as Citywatch when I post something 2 days before they do. (What's wrong with me???)

Mayor Hahn only proposed one trash fee hike ($4 a month) in 2003 to hire 300 police officers. The City Council gratefully accepted the Mayor's suggestion, but instead of funding cops, found other ways to spend the money. Hahn did propose allowing the voters to approve a 1/2 cent sales tax to fund 1500 officers immediately, but fell one vote short of getting it on the ballot. Guess who voted against letting the voters decide? The same guy who keeps raising the trash fee every year without a vote. And he still can't balance the budget.

Let me give you a scenario and see what you think will happen. Imagine you have a large city and you allow millions of poor illegal aliens into the city. And many of these poor illegal aliens have many kids. And the kids of the very poor illegal aliens will need publicly funded services such as school and health care. Add to this welfare and other benefits for the children of the illegal aliens who are born here (anchor babies), who are now U.S. citizens. You now have millions of poor illegal aliens who have a minimum wage job, from which very little taxes is collected. Also a percentage of the illegal aliens may be working in a job which pays in cash and NO taxes are collected. But that is not all; many of the illegal aliens will join street gangs and cost us in police, court and jails.

Now also imagine the taxes that are colleted are managed by politicians who are most concerned with getting elected to their next job. And in case that was enough add city employee unions like the DWP and UTLA who don’t ever fire an incompetent employee. But wait there is more, leeching on the outside are blood sucking lawyers looking for city employees who want to sue the city for millions when the city employee wants to retire early and collect a big fat check.

Wow, what a surprise you have now have a city which is trying to over-tax anybody who actually has more than a minimum wage job

Also shocked and surprised,
Homer and Jethro

Will this extra trash tax have to be voted on? How else could it just be implemented?

Last time, although the trash fee was raised back in 06, just a couple of months ago Parks, Cardenas and some others on the Budget Committee tried very hard to swipe it toward managing the general fund. The Mayor and his allies barely defeated him.

Will this be an annual battle? Has Chick made sure the money is in fact going toward cops? It's not fair to raise trash fees that much over such a short amount of time.

The same deal with Prop S -- what cops and firefighters has this resulted in?

Why are buildings with more than 5 units exempt? Big buildings just recently got the "right" to recycle with separate bins. With that much stuff, are we subsidizing them too?

Big landlords and office buildings have to pay, too if anyone does. But there are so many homeowner taxes being piled up, it's just an oppressive amount of money in total. 30/month extra for trash is over $300/year, it's not peanuts.

That witch Janice Hahn wants to put the same amount of tax on homeowners for gangs, even though Laura Chick keeps telling her we're paying enough, just wasting it.

This is the sort of thing NC's and HOAs should be doing.

#1 There's no need to "imagine". It's happening right outside our doors.

#2 Who "allowed" any of them up here? I sure didn't. Did anyone but Don Quixote "allow" all this?

#3 Call them what they are , Illegal Invaders. When they apply and comply then they can be "immigrants". Til then they're INVADERS..

Do you really think I would lie about this? It is interesting that there are not many comments. Mayor Sam has been around for three years and there is a core of people who post here, that will only post here -- and may read my blog -- but save the posting for here. I agree too. When I was writing here at Mayor Sam -- and LA Daily Blog -- it was cause I had a lot to post (as you can see) and wanted to post off site (not to hog the blog) -- and leave the comments for here.

I think somehow, my blog got digged or delicioused or linked into some feed that is driving eyeballs.

So I'm sure you have some people who only read Mayor Sam. Some that read both..(but this jump from 200 to 5703 is about getting hooked into the right search engines, or something. I didn't do a thing differently. Well see how long the "bump" lasts. Today, so far, there are 1374 new unique views for the day with over 2000 page views.

Anyway...there is a "unique view" hit counter on the site to monitor for yourself. I remember I was all happy when it crossed 3000 earlier this week.

Have you idiots considered this:

Homeless Dave Elliott has no job. He has no responsibility. He has nothing to do.

He can sit there all day and all night and hit reload on his computer and push up his hits.

5000 sure but 5000 all Dave, all night and day long.

Sorry Dave. Looks like I won.

To 2:53pm, I changed the blog from displaying a month's worth of posts to a week's worth. Let me know if that helps, or not.

Homeless Dave there is no way in hell you are getting 5000 hits to your stupid blog.

Even if 1% commented you'd have 5 comments blogged. The blogging is zero.

Mayor Sam probably has a 20-30% blog rate.

If you are getting 5000 hits that means you are up there with LAObserved or LAist I bet.

No way.

Homeless Dave is the shady one.

No matter.

I won. I got Higby to get you off the blog. You lose. Bye!

The reason that apartments of over 5 units are exempt is that the City does not pick up their trash. They have to contract with a private company. So their trash fees can't be raised because they are not subsidized by the City.
