Live Blogging from The Neighborhood Council

Live in North Hollywood...

Public Comment
An artist who has started an artist group, mentions my name, says the Arts Festival has shrunk.
A longtime resident from North Hollywood celebrates various historic landmarks

Comment from Public Officials
Eric Mendevar - Wendy Greuel's office: Wants to give out free child car seats and have an event on how to report graffiti

President's Remarks - big joint NC town hall on development in North Hollywood went well

Board Member Remarks - The town hall showed how NCs can work together, Zero Waste event will be held April 3rd in NoHo, some guy says a website gives free parking passes? Big neighborhood council mixer at CBS Studios in Studio City

Planning Committee Report - Valley and Laurel Plaza was discussed but we have to talk about it later

Communications Committee - Web site delayed one month

Arts Committee - Lets put children's tiles in the park!

Beautification Committee - We want a Trader Joe's in North Hollywood!

Public safety report - Spike in violent crime in North Hollywood, five homicides so far this year, total of nine all of last year, need to seal tunnel under freeway at North Hollywood Park. Girls beating each other up at East Valley High.

The hosting school principal says hello. They're working on putting up a marquee, Board Member Julie Korenstein has matched $5000 contribution from NC.

Treasurer's Report - No bill from Wendy Greuel for her video cameras!

Weddington House - Council discusses placing this historic house in North Hollywood Park instead of moving it to East LA.

Discussion of putting chess tables in the park - well the chess tables are already there but they want $1200 to buy checkers and chess pieces and refreshments?

Lets plant trees with Tony Villar!

Discussion on the big time upcoming Neighborhood Council elections - the City Clerk is going to take over the elections!

New rule to be on the Neighborhood Council - you're a stakeholder if you say you are! Whether you live, work or have anything to do with the area or not.

Now, what day do we want to have the election on? Sunday, Monday, Happy Days, Tuesday, Wednesday, Happy Days, Thursday, Friday, Happy Days, Saturday, what a day!

Now we're on to picking board members for seats that haven't had people in them for months. But God bless them.

This is nonsense - I could be home watching TV. Should I resign? You vote!

Presentation of new big developments at Valley and Laurel Plazas - good ideas. But the NIMBYs want to redesign the project via the NC board. What a long list! But this are happy NIMBYs! They actually like the project overall!

Oh - Dale Thrush is here. Does he know Mayor Sam is 15 feet from him blogging? See you in Sunland-Tujunga Dale!

Alice Roth is here - can I get an autographed Tom LeBong calendar to send to Zuma Dogg?

Well everyone here is in favor of this development - so do we need to keep talking? :)

Dale Thursh: I've been working on this project for eight years, but we want to change a few things and get ready to go.

It's approved!

Meeting over!

Resign. The NC's are ahuge waste of time.

No one cares a whit about what they do or say.

It is all a hoax to mollify the activists.

As my civic duty, I must now step in and save my fellow Angelenos thousands of precious tax dollars in these challenging budget times.

Reporting graffiti can be accomplished in five simple steps. Grab a pencil and jot this down:

Step 1: Lift the telephone receiver to your ear.

Step 2: Dial 3-1-1.

Step 3: Press one for English o para EspaƱol, a prima dos.

Step 4: Report the graffiti incident to the friendly operator.

Step 5: Wait up to four business days for abatement services.

Say, there's a idea, CM Greuel--howsabout a couple extra graffiti cleanup crews?

Some time ago a friend said that this City's best days are behind it.

I believe that is probably true.

Be a leader. You know the political system. You know what makes politicians fold. When you don't have money for contributions, amass people. NC's have the people and the money to organize them. Teach the NC how to do it. Then teach the rest of the NC's.

This city killed the house moving business years ago like they are doing to many businesses.

To bad, it was a great way to recylce the old buildings and create affordable housing.

Now it costs twice as much to move a house as new construction.

I agree. You know how it works. NC's can be effective with good leadership. Why quit? Step up to the plate. Is it hard work? Yep, much like running a blog and trying to work a real job, I bet.

As for the Graffiti clean-up, if you call either the West Valley Alliance or the East Valley Alliance, you will get much faster service than if you call 311. My NC has tried both.. many times.

If NC's really had to give back money, that is one of the few organizations that I believe is worthy of getting huge donations from a NC.

I need to know who this is, we see comment after comment about the anony-mousa.

It would be very helpful to know who this is, after reading so many comments about anony-mousa it's a mystery which must be solved.

MS's NC summary sounds like 90% of all NC meetings in this City. Boring as freakin' hell.

NCs do have their uses. My current favorite is the "Community Impact Statement". These can be very powerful if they are used properly.

sharpei face,
Some nasty fascist shit is being summoned by the very un-organized dark magic sharpei cult. However, light magic of love will protect us. In the deepest depths all is love. The jellyfish are a powerful apparition, a distortion, and life goes much, much deeper than they do.

What the hell does that mean, give us names, dates and etc.

You just write innuendo like Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Either put up or shut up.

Yea I've thought to stay and fight but not sure its worth it.

Most of these people aren't there for a long range vision for the community. They either want to 1) fight to protect their own little piece of land 2) pursue some narrow agenda or 3) do nice things like plant trees or blow up balloons. Few "get it," they abhor anything that seems "hard" or "difficult" and they are dis-respectful of dissenting points of view. The President kind of does his own thing, not like Bradley of course and as a person he's a great guy. But he's a teacher and he runs the meetings like a teacher runs a class. The people from the city departments, council office, etc. come there and have little to offer and usually ask a lot and tell us we have no choice. Most of them are from somewhere else and know little about the community. And they organize everything not with the intent to make the community better first but to make it easy to do their job. That's fine but it doesn't really speak to the stated purpose.

And now this thing of "you're a stakeholder if you say you are" is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. And I can't believe 3/4th of our council resigned themselves to such foolishness (and lambasted those of us who had the nerve to question it).

There are good NCs that do real things: Westchester, Downtown, Eagle Rock. It's mostly a matter of speaking up when you don't like something; most of the time, we just roll our eyes, because that's a neighbor. But challenging what is going on is the better path.

Griffith Park's is boring too.

When NCs get too boring or too bluehaird, they should set up a task force to identify the single biggest problem in the neighborhood, and also identifing one thing about the neighborhood that they would like to maintain. Just working that one problem and working that one preservation issue would make NCs a lot more interesting.

You ought to come to Mid City West Community Council Board Meetings.. a 45 seat Board...

Sometimes our meetings get so heated and interesting I wish we could video them and put em on the internet on pay per view.

MCWCC had to pass that new stakeholder also...all NCs do.. It was passed by the City and is citywide policy now.

The meeting ran almost 4 1/2 hours..wild, absolutely wild.

Sunland-Tujunga's NC Elections are on April 5. Our stakeholders have to show stakeholder proof in order to be a candidate or to vote.

One of our Candidate Forums is March 24 at 8 pm at North Valley City Hall, after our 7 pm land use committee meeting. You are invited to check us out. We are proud of our NC. Our meetings are very seldom boring and we have great attendance. That's probably because we have so many major issues to deal with, including Home Depot. Everyone is encouraged to speak when they wish to and are treated with respect when they do so.
