Hump Day Jumpstart

Carbon Neutral? Finding a convenient train stop can be a bitch—just ask New York City’s “Subway Mayor” Mike Bloomberg. He rides 22 blocks through Manhattan in a pair of hulking Suburbans in search of the perfect subway platform to kick off his morning commute.

Being driven to the 59th Street station [from Bloomberg’s residence on East 79th] shaves about a third off the mayor’s commuting time, based on a reporter’s test runs. It also saves him aggravations others cannot avoid, like taking the local and transferring to the express.

Those pesky transfers! Say, does this tour include Starbucks?

Asked why the mayor required two sport-utility vehicles, [his spokesman] declined to comment.

Pulling Teeth: Is anyone really investigating the Port incident? Janice, Bernie, Szabo, and the port police have all blamed the port police, but are we seriously to believe that the cops cooked up a multi-stage containment procedure—which allowed the mayor to escape a pack of rabid reporters—just for the Hell of it?

Sky’s the Limit: As you probably read yesterday, City Council has approved new zoning rules allowing denser, taller construction. Wanna see what’s in store? This thread has an exhaustive list of downtown projects, from proposed to recently completed.

did you ever use the subways, let alone in rush hour? not only crowded, but would be pretty hard for a public figure, any public figure, to ride on without getting hassled.

No, you don't know NY from squat.

What's the other crap...oh, yeah, let's blame the Port incident on anyone but the press, pressing forward dangerously into a secure area, and endangering a public figure... Gee, would Bloomberg or the residents of NY been stupid enough to say the press can ignore and aggressively violate laws? No, because they understand that their elected officials are between them and anarchy.

Hahn: the biggest leftie since... well, the rest of the Hahns. Tricked the CC into approving over 120K in "fee waivers" for HER sole district's obscure events, last Friday 8.3 alone. "Hahn the Embezzle" Jon and Ken/KFI call her; only question, which Hahn? They've used city money to pay for their districts' patronage foverve, just like the Corleone's in Godfather.

Bitter Bernie: you mean, the one who infamously can't get over being replaced by someone competent, so has to use his CM position to make his (Bratton's) life miserable and dispute every decision every chance he gets... What other misfits do you dig up, exactly?

Just about all the coucilmembers pass out fee waivers as part of buying loyalty. The only difference is that some do it more than others.

There really seems to be no reeling in of this function, and it looks like they are a done deal when proposed.

There doesn't seem to be real guidelines for the Council to follow in allowing waivers, but I would expect they would not create any limits on their own.

They all look to self-preservation in office as priority one, and all else is secondary, with the Villar contingent in the council as the biggest culprits.

I thought that Villar had routinely allowed the press to follow him to his "vehicle(s)", evidently to allow more photo ops. Whay did the rules suddenly change in this instance?

Hey 4:50 a.m
Embezzle?
Jim and Janice are both as honest as their dad was. Fee waivers are done in every single council district for neighborhood block parties, community events, etc. They are no big deal. How about the subsidies for LA Marathon, Grammys, Oscars, etc.? Those are a big deal.

4:50, either you didn't get enough sleep last night, or you are not a regular reader.

I've clearly stated my opinion that the press was out of control. However, as another reader pointed out, the police allowed them into the secure area in a controlled manner. The situation deteriorated when Unger decided to run. My question is, why is Szabo denying that the police were given instructions to block the press?

On your first point, you are wrong. Before Los Angeles, I lived in NYC and commuted every day during rush hour on the subways in Manhattan -- as do the folks who wrote the Times article. You need a sense of humor.

10:33: The Oscars and Grammys and Emmys (international events which give the city huge positive P R) are, in your mind, on the same level as all of Embezzle Hahn's throwing money around to block parties and festivals to celebrate nothing, in her district? You're either stupid or pathetic -- clearly, you work for her.

I don't dispute, though, your claim that is is an honest as Jim Hahn was! And that they learned this from their dad... HA, HA, HA!!!

And no, others don't do this in anything like the degree she does. As person said, check the list of her fraudulent waivers on 8/3 alone and that's one day.

Until the council decided during the recent retreat to cut down the endless presentations, it was the same JANICE HAHN who was responsible for about half of the really long, time-wasting ones, including marching bands, babble- babble - babble from her...

Loved the recent long presentation where she featured HERSELF of course as an "alligator wrangler" in a video about the capture of that alligator -- while the real wranglers were ignored, of course.

TG she'll have to cut that down so we don't see her ugly head and loud crude voice so much. Now, if they can only challenge and count up her fee waivers for irrelevant and self-serving items.

And she and Bitter Bernie do make a credible team when it comes to bashing Bratton and the cops again.

Not when you compare it to Zuma and Dowd, who hump each other every day.
