Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Tuesday

Rick Orlov reports that Mayor Villaraigosa's aides were on pins and needles waiting for Telemundo's decision regarding Mirthala Salinas. The Mayor and his staff hope the scandal will die down. It doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon following the manhandling of a Spanish language television reporter by LA Port Security last Friday at a Villaraigosa press event.

Mayor Villaraigosa dodged a bullet last Thursday when the City Ethics Commission fined him $5200 for numerous campaign law violations during his 2003 run for City Council (the one where he said he would serve his full term and not run for Mayor in 2005). The Mayor could have received fines of up to $150,000.

With respect to the Recall Jack Weiss Campaign, West LA Online asks the question wouldn't it better to elect the right people in the first place? Why sure, how do we do that?

The New York Times has a story and a video report on the now 27 year old Chelsea Clinton who is about to gear up to campaign for her mother for President. Chelsea could make history should her mother be successful and be the only person to serve twice as a first kid.

And finally, a group of left leaning bloggers want to form a union - in order to get health care, conduct collective bargaining and set "professional standards." Of course, usually to have a union you need management. Let me pick myself up off the floor right now.

West L A online's Jim Burch calls the recalljackweiss a bunch "reactionary whiners," without anything positive to put forth, which is right on.

Problem is, even with a positive new "vision" for the Westside, the city council and bureaucracy requires the most apt maneuvering to get anything or anything done.

Start with the demand for more cops; some groups say there are only 9-10 cops patrolling the westside at any given time, but meanwhile, the Valley reps are blasting the city and cops for not having enough out there, and some valley people are threatening to secede again. Then, the Hispanics from the East Side and East Valley claim they are underserved.

Meanwhile, there is not enough money to hire cops for any area, frustrating Bratton. It is a similar battle over every resource, and frankly, the Eastside reps constitute more of a faction.

It's all very frustrating. If the westside seceded, we'd be rich and able to have more cops and services.

Getting back to the hip check of the reporter at the Port ..... it's a continuing example of how inept the Mayor's press office and advance people are. They seem ill-prepared for crises.

One possibility is that the Mayor's office told the Port Police to keep the reporters away from the Mayor after the news conference -- a break from the way the Mayor normally does things. In that case, the Mayor's office lied when they said that they didn't issue such instructions.

The only other choice is the the Mayor's office failed to anticipate what eventually happened, and the Port Police, with little experience in such things, were left to try and figure out what to do on the spot. When the Mayor's office saw all those political reporters at the event, it should have been a clue that they weren't there to cover the news conference, and they should have developed a plan on the spot.

It's the problem that comes from hiring "yes people" instead of skilled professionals.

Uhm, Mayor Sam, right now the top ad in the sponsor column on the right says,

"Kegel Exercises for Women
Learn the Secret to Kegel Exercises and Regain your Vaginal Health..."

Is this a public service you're offering... or is that how you lost all the weight or....?

And what about my children? I can't have them reading this blog with ads like that! Please do something. Thank you.

People are now beginning to realize the Power of BLOGS. Because Chick got blasted she's decided NOT to hire Allen. LA Slimes story today.

I want to know if the city is collecting the trash fee that Antonio said would go for more cops what the hell are they doing with it? If its sitting in some general fund don't you think the common sense thing to do is give it to LAPD for overtime and put more cops on the street now? Oh excuse me, I forgot the clowncil members we have can't think in logical terms. They have a mental deficiency.

This is why Daily News is getting more readers and LA Slimes is losing them. Good for them having the guts to print what we all think.

Cops and mayors: Police aren't there to shield Villaraigosa from tough questions
Article Last Updated: 08/06/2007

IT'S understandable that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa would not want to talk anymore about his affair with reporter Mirthala Salinas. It's also understandable that he would try to dodge questions on the subject.

But it's unreasonable for the mayor to think he can call a press conference and then not get asked about it.

And it's inappropriate for Villaraigosa to use city police personnel as his own personal-scrutiny buffer, as he tried last week. When reporters at a press conference at the Port of Los Angeles started asking questions about you-know-who, a group or port officers tried to cordon them off.

Since when is it against the law to ask the mayor uncomfortable questions?

Worse yet, when one of the reporters got too close, a cop shoved her into a steel container.

Given fresh memories of the May Day melee, Villaraigosa hardly can afford to have police officers beating up on reporters - again. It's not only bad P.R.; it could also lead to an expensive lawsuit.

If the mayor wants to avoid the media, he ought to go into hiding, like Rocky Delgadillo. It's not the job of the police to protect him from unwanted questions

L.A. controller drops plans to hire advisor
By David Zahniser
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

August 7, 2007

Under fire for hiring a City Hall contractor with ties to lobbyists, Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick said Monday that she has abandoned plans for employing Marcus Allen, a onetime aide to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, as a consultant.

Chick said she would not proceed with the $85,000-a-year contract with Allen, who is a consultant to City Hall lobbyists Arnie Berghoff and Harvey Englander.

Last week, City Councilman Dennis Zine questioned whether Allen would face a conflict of interest in his two jobs by working both for the city's auditor and for firms that might take on targets of audits as their clients.

Chick responded by saying Allen would establish a firewall between himself and his other bosses.

On Monday, Chick said she and Allen had changed course.

"In our enthusiasm to put his expert abilities to work again for the city of Los Angeles, we lost sight of how this contract would be perceived," she said in a statement.

Allen, who worked for Chick from 2001 to 2005, would have earned $250 an hour. If he had worked the $85,000 contract maximum, that would have amounted to eight and a half weeks' worth of billable hours.

That is twisted on so many levels.

First, it IS the job of law enforcement to protect anyone who is at risk from an unruly mob: whether a nitwit like Paris Hilton or any other celebrity, or the Mayor, who happens to have a responsibility to the citizens he is trying to serve. Sure, the cops should stand back and allow paparazzi to attack their victims: these slimy newshounds have become no better than the lowest paparazzi, as many blogs as well as MSM acknowledge.

Those hounddogs were preventing him from doinghis job and endangered his safety. They disobeyed police orders anyone without clearance is required to obey by law in a secure area, let alone anywhere. That Unger woman, a foreign national no less, behaved with a deliberate intent to disobey the laws of the U S and the State of California.

She should be arrested, and all the so-called "reporters" (not) should be given a warning and arrested the next time.

Nice try, Daily Snooze: NO, you don't get a free pass to harass public officials or persons, NOR to intentionally violate the laws of our city, state and country, just because you want to be the first to get your nobody names or ugly mugs in the news, for harassing someone.

All but the dumbest, most equally stupid and bloodthirsty bloggers, like this one, can see through your self-serving, desperate attempts to try to force the Mayor and police into letting you continue on your slimy ways. YOU ARE NOW EXPOSED.

Trying to spin that woman knowingly breaking the law, will never work.

The public sympathy is with the cop, and the law.

Jim Alger can go on about the Mayor all he wants, but what about Home Depot's stock? Next Tuesday the committee will meet and zoning in Reseda will be an issue of another time. I find it very interesting and as I was talking with Joy Newley, the community has seen nothing yet. Et tu Alger?

My sympathy is not with the cop, nor is it with Pollovillar who created the situation.

If the Mayor's staff is waiting for this to go away, they are in for a good long wait.

In my opinion, Bill Clinton was one of our better Presidents in recent years - remember the "surplus"? But he trashed his Presidency, and crippled his effectiveness, by his pathetic lack of judgment and self discipline in getting involved with "that woman".

Every time I see him, I can only think that, if not for his sophomoric behavior, Al Gore would be President, 3600+ U.S. soldiers would still be alive, and the economy would not be facing deficit induced doom.

Tony Villar is, alas, no Bill Clinton. But the memory of his childish behavior will never go away, any more than Bill Clinton's has.

If you really wanted to do something meaningful to help the world, ya all, follow Mia Farrow's example. Just think of the publicity you'd get.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (Associated Press) -- Mia Farrow has offered to give up her freedom so that an ailing Darfur rebel leader can get safe passage out of a hospital, according to a letter the actress wrote to Sudan's president and posted on her Web site.

Suleiman Jamous, a moderate who has been a key link between Darfur rebels and aid workers in the war-torn Sudanese region, needs to leave the country for further medical care, Farrow, 62, said in the letter to President Omar al-Bashir, dated Sunday.

Jamous, suffering from abdominal problems, has been at a U.N. hospital outside Darfur. The U.N. has said he is free to leave, but he fears arrest or government reprisals if he does.

"As you are undoubtedly aware, Mr. Jamous is in need of a medical procedure that cannot be carried out in Kadugli," wrote Farrow, who has traveled to Darfur as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and signed her letter with that title.

"I am therefore offering to take Mr. Jamous's place, to exchange my freedom for his in the knowledge of his importance to the civilians of Darfur and in the conviction that he will apply his energies toward creating the just and lasting peace that the Sudanese people deserve and hope for," she wrote.

This is great! ZD as a professional hostage. It think this is his true calling. He doesn't have a job now. He wouldn't be giving up great living conditions here. In between hostage stints I'm sure Oprah would want him on her show. And after about 5 or 6 of these, he could write a book. I mean have someone write it for him.

This was also the race in which Antonio made Nick Pacheco out to be a crook - nearly 30 pieces of mail were sent out to homes all bearing unfoudned allegations against Nick - and who ends up getting fined. All these pieces were emblazoned with Antonio's picture - right after he had spent nearly $5 million on name identification through the school bond and secession campaigns the year before. All this money and Parke still had to resort to lying. This is also the election in which Antonio's and Parke's lies spelled the end for one of East L.A.'s most successful community based organization, the Mothers of East L.A..

How much longer can L.A. put up with this hypcorisy?
