L.A. Crime Stats: A-Murder-A-Day Plus 74 Violent Crimes

Walter Moore, Candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles, MooreIsBetter.com

I read a news story about how “gang murders” were supposedly down 32%, which sounded pretty good.

Then I went to the LAPD’s website, and looked at the latest crime statistics.

It turns out that, from January 1 to May 26, 2007, we had 10,833 violent crimes, including 144 murders. That doesn’t sound so great. In fact, that’s terrible. Those numbers work out to one murder per day, and 74 violent crimes per day.

If I’m elected Mayor, the budget process will BEGIN with doing whatever it takes to hire enough police to make EVERY neighborhood safe. If that’s the kind of Mayor you want, don’t count on others to get me elected: contribute yourself, right now, at MooreIsBetter.com. It’s really up to you.

But, oh sweet sweet, hopeful mayor, what will you do about traffic deaths?

Lots of people die in car crashes every year in L.A.

Bicyclists and pedestrians get mowed down by speeding and reckless drivers all the time.

Why are these deaths less important? Aren't they just as prolific? Aren't they just as awful?

It's 1950 on the phone, they want their paranoid midwestern "public safety" rhetoric back.

I guess if there aren't minorities to be suppressed, then your quivering republican heart isn't interested.

I see. Wanting to reduce the number of murders and violent crime now constitutes suppression of minorities. Yeah, that makes sense. (Care to guess which ethnic group in L.A. gets murdered per capita far more than any other? Or would wanting to reduce the number of murders clash too much with your attempt to make it "racist" to want safe streets?)

As for bicyclists and pedestrians getting mowed down, which do you think will reduce that more: i) plowing more money into "Homeboy Industries" and "No Gun," or ii) having more patrol cars on the streets ticketing people who blast through stop signs, without looking, while chatting on their cell phones.

Hey, Line 2 is calling: the Mayor wants a breath stip. Chop chop, lil' staffer.

P.P.S. If you really care about bicyclists, I suggest you read my platform regarding the creation of "two-wheel only" lanes. Oh wait, I forgot! My proposals to make it safer and easier to ride bikes are part of a racist 50's plot, too!

Walter, will the patrol cars on the streets be focused on gangs and serious crime or on people who run stop signs? Can they really do it all?

You can't promise everything to everybody. That hasn't worked for our current Mayor.

Rule of law means rule of law. Period. You do not let people ignore stop signs. You do not let them ignore immigration laws.

Can 100% of the laws be enforced 100% of the time in 100% of the City's area? That should be the goal.

I don't promise everyone everything. But I do promise that budgeting will involve STARTING with hiring enough police. Public safety is the No. 1 priority. It has to be.

Deming warns to beware of numbers.

These numbers are always apple and oranges. It is a mistake of public perception to think you can convince the people that crime is down, by quoting your own numbers.

Part of the statistical dip may have something to do with the way crime reports are now inputted into the LAPD computer. They had a "software change" and now, if you have a crime with multiple violations, only the biggest one is entered into the main input field.

For example, if you break down a door, steal someone's ipod off their head, then shoot them dead; only the part about shooting them dead will be inputted into the computer data entry field that is used for this statistic.

This hurts crime, because money is allocated based on these figures, and I know domestic violence is now under-reported under this new system.

Besides the validity of the numbers, themself -- and the PR mistake to think you can convince people crime is under control with these stats;

HOW ABOUT THE TIMING, Y'ALL..

Yes, I accept Hillary Clinton's appointment as her Campaign Co-Chair and I am will now quote statistics to show how as mayor, I reduced crime.

(I bet Bratton would say you were more of a barrier to any actual success, than a help. Re: Villar/ACLU/Meth Heads vs LAPD. Kevin James and Doug McIntyre have a few reasons, too.)

So again, if it doesn't fool ZD, it doesn't fool the informed voters who are paying attention to his comments.

Sorry...You lose, Carl Miller.

I wish the rest of City Hall was a transparent as your timing and bogus stats.

Sad but minorities are killing each other. What they should do is try and figure out how many violent crimes are committed by illegal immigrants? 70% of county jail houses illegal criminals. The stats on crime are done exactly how the FBI tracks their numbers and the way the state says it should be done. Zuma don't listen to Bitter Bernie who is once again acting like a crybaby and whining.

Look at this another gang banger who the city gave money to arrested. How many of these ex-cons is the city paying?
FOUNDER OF ANTI-GANG GROUP ARRESSTED
The founder of an anti-gang organization known as No Guns, once funded by the city of Los Angeles, was arrested Thursday and charged with selling firearms to federal undercover officers.

Hector "Big Weasel" Marroquin, 51, was arrested at his home in the 8000 block of 6th Street in Downey, said Susan Raichel, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

He was charged with the sale of an assault rifle, a machine gun, two pistols and two silencers, Raichel said... The city eventually added No Guns to its L.A. Bridges anti-gang program. No Guns received $1.5 million from the city before its subcontract was canceled last year...The action came after revelations that Marroquin hired many of his relatives at No Guns — including his son, Hector "Little Weasel" Marroquin — followed by his arrest last year in Hawthorne on weapons charges

When I was in college, I took a class in Statistical Analysis. The instructor taught a very valuable lesson at the beginning of the course which somehow stuck with me.

She said, "There is one important statement to be made concerning statistics. Statistics can be compared to a woman wearing a very brief bikini: What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital!"

With regard to Zuma's statement regarding LAPD's crime analysis software change, her lesson to my Statistical Analysis class retains its validity.

ubrajy02's name is Josef Bray-Ali. He is not a member of the Mayor's staff. Please acknowledge that you were incorrect to call him a "lil' staffer" in your comment at 11:58 a.m. today.

Perhaps you should show some respect to those who comment on this blog by not labelling all of them Mayoral staffers? Believe it or not, people who are not Mayoral staffers may want to comment on your policies.

Thank you for your cooperation. The voters are watching.

What comes around goes around. I don't know or care who you are "UbrayJ02" are or pretend to be. For all I know, you're one and the same, and you're on Villaraigosa's staff.

Whoever you are, if you make idiotic comments -- e.g., equating public safety with "suppression" of "minorities" -- don't expect to be treated with respect. Life is short. If you're an idiot, I'm not going to pretend you're anything else. I'm not one of those "all points of view, regardless of whether they have any basis in reality, are very important and deserve equal treatment" politicians.

The goal of this blog, from my perspective, is serious discussion of public policy issues. When some staffer with an 80 IQ starts calling everyone racist, well, he makes himself what you call a "verbal pinata." You don't like it, start your own blog. Call it "Ubray explains why everyone's a racist."

Walter, if you click on ubrayj02's name, you can go to his blog. On his blog, you will see that he is a member of the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council. If you go to the website of the Arroyo Seco NC, you see that a Mr. Josef Bray-Ali is a member. Ubrayj02 is the handle for Mr. Bray-Ali. Mr. Bray-Ali is not on the Mayor's staff, as anyone who knows local politics can tell you.

Please acknowledge that you were incorrect to call Mr. Bray-Ali a "lil' staffer" in your comment at 11:58 a.m. yesterday. Thank you for your cooperation. The voters are watching.

Wow - two anonymous posters linking my name to my online name. I feel so special. My cover is blown!!1

I wrote what I wrote to show how cynical and stale Walter's rhetoric is. The only crimes that matter to the white-boys who occupied this great city, are the violent ones. They are fascinated with the idea of wild minority groups raping and pillaging, and they want to raise an army of uniformed men to protect their lilly white asses. A lot of people die every year in L.A., a lot of them from car-related crashes. You'll never hear one of these dust-bowl era dopes talking about that. They are more interested in whipping people into a frenzy about violent crime and how fearful they should be. If you've ever tried to make your neighborhood safer, cops are only part of the solution (LAPD officers will admit as much - and they have said as much for decades).

Here is what I wanted to say back when I wrote my original post:

It is every L.A. politicians wet dream to come to their voters with the achievement of increasing the numbers of police on the streets. Most of them commit a lot of time and attention to doing so.

You've got nothing but copied and pasted rhetoric, Walter.

I could copy and paste Walter Moore's post, slap any politicians name on it, and no one would be the wiser. It is, almost word for word, the same rhetoric that politicians have used since the 1950's (or earllier) in Los Angeles.

Wendy Gruel passed a bill that would allow any councilmember who is able to find a way to reduce the budget of some other city department or program to put that money into a police hiring fund. The General Services cops have recently been brought under one command structure - and represent about 1,000 extra police officers on the city pay roll.

Everyone and their mother is trying to increase the number of LAPD officers on the force. Unless you've got something specific to say about the topic, STFU dude.
