Caruso Watch

The latest happenings as we await the word to come down on high from 101 The Grove Drive:

We broke the "news" that Rick Caruso is going to announce for Mayor. And that two very high profile local elected officials are prepared to endorse him. I can't say who but one might have a mustache.

Then we heard from some of the fine folks at Caruso's firm, Caruso Affiliated, to make sure we knew no decision has been made yet. But we would hear soon.

Later, one of our dum dums posted in comments what could be the starting lineup for Team Caruso. The people at CA said "Nothing has been announced."

Now the buzz is picking up beyond Mayor Sam. Dennis Zine was asked about a Caruso candidacy on talkradio today, based on our story. Westside White Guy approached the man himself at one of those shi-shi LA book premieres last night and it sounded a lot like a candidate telegraphing his intentions. And Curbed LA is notching it up with a post and reader comments that back Caruso, anyone but Villaraigosa, Ed Begley, Jr. and Larry David for Mayor.

Zine, a bitter and still angry over being defeated by Villar Hahn or two. As a Democrat I doubt Zev will endorse Caruso even though he's had his differences with Antonio. Of course the Antonovich/ Knabe Red, conservative, suburban, anti-metro-LA crowd is champing at the bit, along with their Cooley. Sure, just what we need, more fake mall-villages for Caruso's profit. Despite his empty talk about green this and that, he says he didn't find it "cost-effective" for his own malls and he doesn't care what his traffic does to the surrounding communities, leaving all the problems to the city.

The anti-development people who cry "anyone but Antonio" would be up in arms when Caruso's traffic magnets move to their hoods. Much as they would deserve Caruso and it would be amusing to watch them scream, the rest of us don't.

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen (removes hat and bows low with flourish):

Sots, if I were a betting men, which I am not, but rather, if you will, a man who likes hard liquor, I would put my money on the Robinson for we have been approached for and have already committed a size-able sum of money that was earmarked for He Who Thinks He Has It In The Bag but is now for the Robinson to run. (Winks) And run he will, savvy?

(Grins) And for that certain someone who will be understandably upset, we'll tell you up front that it was what you said to our Helmsman in person and what it was you said about the Helmsman behind his back that caused a shift in the wind. (Speaks confidentially) You see, nothing is for sure even if one pays $5,000 a plate for the opportunity to sit at table with pirates.

(Looks at He Who Thinks He Has It In The Bag and shakes head) Poor suffering sot. Pass over some of that pink bismuth and a bottle of gin. We've a feeling someone's going to need it. But in which particular order we're not sure, savvy?

Caruso is as good as in. I know of a city union that can help put him there. Antonio's made a lot of enemies.

I really hope Caruso jumps in, the city does need a new leader that stays focus on local issues. Villar has been by far worse mayor that James Hahn, I am sure Antonio is counting on latinos to come out in big numbers for him but I am predicting that he will not get over 50%.

For all you Antonio haters, here's some significant dates:

November 3 - First day to file inteniton to run for office (and econominc statements)

November 8, Last day for the above

October 3 - last day to have moved into district and established residency.

Not long to wait for Higby's dream to come true, or be greatly disapppointed.

GO RICK GO RICK GO RICK. Yup sure sounds like he's may be making that announcement next week. People are saying possibly Hertzberg and Riordan are the two who will endorse him. People are talking about this one and many are saying they will definitely support Caruso rather then Villaraigosa. What the hell has Antonio done but ruined this city?? He hasn't done shit and at least Caruso has a history of accomplishments. I will say he has a hell of a lot more community support then people think.

When Caruso says you can't solve traffic problems just by building living quarters on top of retail, as long as it's near public transit, he could be talking about his own Americana.

Except that he never even bothered himself with mass transit, figuring at the Grove it's a lot easier to charge people a min. of $2 bucks to park and get them to open their wallets every step they're there. As noted he didn't mitigate traffic like he promised, leaving neighbors angry, and for all his green talk that's all for someone else -- he didn't want to spend the extra money for it at his malls. More Money, money, money for me.

What has Hertzberg done for the City? What has Riordan done?

Both are yesterday's news; Obama and Hillery will endorse Antonio.

Caruso will lose and ruin his reputation, plus he will screw up his two current projects by devoting too much time and money to trying to beat a popular incumbent.

You guys must really think Caruso is as dumb as you are....
