Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Wednesday

Reaction to our story that developer and civic leader Rick Caruso has decided to run for Mayor of Los Angeles.  A senior representative of Caruso's real estate development firm contacted us to say that no decision has been made yet.  However should Caruso get into the race, candidate Walter Moore says bring it on.   Moore told the Sister City "I don't think the people of Los Angeles are crying out for a billionaire Republican developer to become Mayor. If Caruso sincerely wants to replace Villaraigosa with someone who will make this city a great place to live and do business, then he should should support my campaign rather than start one of his own. His time would be better spent on his Miramar Hotel project in Montecito."

The Spanish language daily paper La Opinion has endorsed Mark Ridley-Thomas over Bernard Parks for County Supervisor. The paper said that the State Senator "has shown himself to be an inclusive leader, a bridge-builder on community issues, and a person who has a commitment to engaging with Latinos."

Following much debate and hand-wringing the Los Angeles City Council has voted to oppose Proposition 11, a measure on the state ballot to bring a sense of fairness to the drawing of legislative districts.  Of course they would.

Candidate for County Supervisor Bernard Parks held a voter registration event and registered over 400 people ages 18 to 97.  Parks wrote on his campaign blog “It’s important to clarify the myths that have sometimes been created to keep people away from the polls. There are only three circumstances that could legally prohibit people from voting.”

A survey of active duty military shows that America's troops support John McCain for President by nearly 3-1.   McCain, R-Ariz., handily defeated Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., 68 percent to 23 percent in a voluntary survey of 4,293 active-duty, National Guard and reserve subscribers and former subscribers to Army Times, Navy Times, Marine Corps Times and Air Force Times.

Democrats once again show their class.  At a business conference at Cambridge former Presidential nominee John Kerry implied that Republican Presidential candidate John McCain wears Depends adult diapers. But what do you expect from the haughty, French orange man who is a rich old bat's trophy husband.

Leftist wack-job Cindy Sheehan - who is running aginst fellow leftist wack-job House Speaker Nancy Pelosi - is paranoid that forces supporting Pelosi are out to silence her.  And among the culprits involved in the conspiracy against Cindy she counts our own Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Being blinded by hate of Mayor Villaraigosa has warped yuor mind, Higby.

Caruso would never take it on unless he thought he would be anointed, and that just isn't happening.

The Mayor has the money and the votes and Caruso has two projects that need his personal attention to get done. He has no time to stop and run a brutal campaign, much less take office if he won.

Why bother, when in four short years, he can run without having to face a well funded opponent?

Caruso didn't get rich being stupid. Even osme of the fools you keep around here could figure that one out if they could stop hating Antonio so much.

Let's go back to intelligent discussions and once again cancerl out that homeless vagrant moron so we don't all have to scroll through the long rambling Holden Caulfield wonderings of nothingless he insists upon posting.

Walter I appreciate all you have done speaking out on issues and support your cause. However, Caruso is a decent, well respected man who has many friends in very high places and in communities. Too bad I can't say the same for Villaraigosa about being welcomed in communities. He's laughed and mocked because of his inability to lead this city. His approval rating is lower then Bush. Many people already have had conversations at community meetings when the topic comes up and a lot of them will support Caruso. You have to give a man credit who has faced down hill battles consistently with his developments and ends up warming up to the people in those communities and winning them over because he cares what they think. He's a good man.

Interesting that Sheehan, who globbed onto the Democrats with Pelosi and Murtha ranting about the war are mow the ones she thinks are watching her. Logic on the left would lead one to imagine the right would watch her, but reality is probably on Sheehan's side, as that is the way the Demo machine works.

I don't know of ONE single person who would NOT vote for Caruso! I don't know of ONE single person who would re-elect Villar!

No one could be worse for this city than Villar...he thinks he's in Tijuana!

The most important qualification of Caruso is that he is AMERICAN! He loves AMERICA! He is a patriot!

WE LOVE YOU, RICK!!!!

I think that quote from Walter is the funniest thing I have ever seen. Yeah, if Rick Caruso cares about the city, he should support Walter instead of running himself. I don't think it comes off as arrogant, at all.

One Who Knows, usually you're right and for our country's sake I hope you're right that McCain wins.

This time you may know but you may not be sure.

It is on the table. Unless Caruso is just playing a game which I doubt considering what I know.

And it's not hate of Antonio, it's disgust. Disgust that not only has he accomplished nada but that he's spent most of his time fundraising, glad handing, junketting, Mirthaling, etc. when we needed him most.

Lead or get out of the way.

What one insider told me is that when Caruso jumps some other folks will jump to see other spots. Everyone is just waiting for that first match to be lit.

Love those mavericks!

According to the Associated Press, Palin charged the state of Alaska $21,000 for her children to travel with her, including events to which they were not invited, and later amended the reports to say they were for Official business.

One "official business" trip was to watch their father in a snowmobile race.

Palin already receives $17,000 in per diem payments.

Imagine how this blog would be burning up if Villagraiso did the same thing.

I guess that for some people there is a different set of rules for the people they like.

In Alaska, there is the collective ownership of valuable natural resources that generates lots of revenue for the state, and then the government spreads the wealth around through the Permanent Fund, etc.

somewhat special case in which socialism is a good idea.

Wait a minute! Isn't that socialism?

And let's not even get into what it's called when the federal government seizes and nationalizes large banks in order to recapitalize them.

Higby, I sure hope Caruso is the October surprise we have been waiting for! I hope your sources aren't playing a cruel joke!

Look at it this way...everyone was ready to vote for Walter because we are THAT FED UP with Villar!

Now that there is hope (Caruso)...I don't even care who wins the Federal election! All politics is local...and, IMO, getting rid of Villar is more important than who is President!

As soon as Caruso confirms his run...I will do ANYTHING to get him elected! I will work from now until March 4th registering every citizen in the county!

I hope that Walter puts the interest of the city before his own personal gain...and drops out if Caruso jumps in!

WE HAVE HOPE NOW...WE CAN HAVE CHANGE!!!

The Mexican mafia must be quaking under their sombreros today! Villar must be crapping in his pants!

"Wacko Walter" has gone back to being "Moore is Bitter" - the retreat position that inched him down from singles digit to -- LOWER single digits in the last mayor's race.

As David Spade used to say in the airline skits on SNL, even arrogant, self-deluded Moore knows that if Caruso enters the race, he can just say "BUH-BYE" any chance of being recognized as even a dark horse, second-tier candidate for mayor.

Blah, blah, blah - BUH BYE, Wacko. Don't go away bitter, just GO AWAY. Your prattling, whiney radio spots have almost completely soured me on conservative talk radio in L.A. and I'm a rabid Reaganite.

Hell, the other day I found myself switching to KPFK, fer gawds sake, JUST to get away from Kevin James droning on about how Nobody Walter was the ONLY salvation for L.A.

PUHLEESE. There are 4 million people in this city, and about 3 million would do a better job of running it than the guy THIS VERY BLOG nicknamed "WACKO WALTER"!

John McCain says he's amazed at the number of respected conservatives who have been criticizing his selection of Palin.

He also got cranky about the "gotcha" questions that she got hit with during some national interviews.

Isn't the ability to handle all questions one way of testing whether or not some would make a good VP? Including being asked to name a single newspaper that she reads?

In the current issue of New Yorker, which includes a detailed accounting of the events to led to the selection of Palin, a high-ranking Republican is quoted as saying that McCain is angry about the fact that she is the VP, but he knows that he can't say anything because it was his decision (after meeting with her once for three hours in Sedona).

Interesting!

In Minnesota, commedian and Democrat Al Franken has now pulled ahead of Republican Norm Coleman with 54% according to FiveThirtyEight.com which combines the results of many survey groups.

But most interesting is that Coleman refused to attend a McCain a few days ago. Republicans, concerned about their campaigns, are starting to distance themselves from McCain as they did with Bush from the start of the election season.

The great thing about Caruso is yes, he's filthy rich but unlike arrogant rich people he believes in giving back. He's taught his children to volunteer in communities that need the help and donates so much of his money to the less fortunate. He's not two faced like the Mayor or corrupt. Miniority communities support him because while Caruso was a police commissioner he would visit those communities to talk about issues. Villaraigosa has lost tons of his Latino base support because he's done nothing for his people and ruined our city to the illegals. There's a big difference between the Latinos who SPEAK ENGLISH AND ILLEGALS. Please don't get us confused.

Even the Weekly, whose anti-Villar editor Jill Stewart is pushing Caruso and features a glowing story about him with no substance (in stark contrast to the hit pieces they're running against Antonio), notes that it's too late for Caruso to throw his hat into the ring this year. He's just forming a task force for next time, with no strong Dem challenger on the horizon. (Eric, anyone? Wendy Greuel? Will Zev finally take a stab?)

I sure hope a shining knight emerges by then. Caruso has said in so many words that he's prepared to develop the entire city into fake mall/"communities" for his and his developer friends' profit.

Like even his butt-kissing Weekly story notes, he'd have to build up some support in minority communities first, which he's ignored in his building frenzy. He'd have to go into South LA and the Latino areas to throw up a mall and show he's not just going to run Westwood and Woodland Hills.

Here's some good news for McCain:

The AP/Gfk poll shows the Obama lead to be 5% among regisitered voters and just 1% among likely voters.

The bad news for McCain is that among the 7 other leading pollsters, Obama's lead ranging from 9% to 14% among registered voters, and 5% to 14% among most likely voters.

The differences are explained by the way that each pollster assumes turnout.

In 2004, Republicans turned out in greater numbers. This year it will clearly be Democrats.

But among those Democrats will be young and minority voters who aren't in the category of "most likely."

So, if you believe that Obama supporters will turn out in droves, and that will include new voters and ones who don't regularly vote, you looked at the regisitered voter results more than the most likely results.

It's the assumptions as to turnout that cause the disparity in the various polls.

The other bad news for McCain is that we don't elect the president using a popular vote.

According to Reporters Without Borders for Press Freedom (Paris) the United States ranks 36th in the world for press freedom.

And that's the good news because it has risen from 48th place last year.

That still puts us behind Estonia, Lativa, Finland (Haikula-land), Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ghana. We're tied with Bosnia, South Africa, and and few few others.

Don't know whether to cheer or cry.

ABC news reports that in new voters preferred John Kerry by 7%. This year, Obama's edge is 47%.

Among those who have previouly voted, the ABC News/Washington Post poll shows Obama leading 50-47%.

Obama leads 53-44% among most likely voters.

But among first-time voters, Obama leads 73-26%.

And this is what makes it so different to rely upon just one poll and the weightening that it uses.

Villaraigosa Joins Zuma Dogg in Calling For "Special Event Fee Waiver" MORATORIUM

In a "Belt-tightening" memo to City Council, City Controller, City Attorney and City Department heads, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is finally on the same page as Zuma Dogg when it comes to a moratorium on "Special Event Fee Waivers." Can't wait until I can use the two minutes of public comment on something else!

Guess who said this yesterday?: "Granting fee waivers for special events and/or not seeking reimbursement of staff cost related to special events continues to be a drain on limited City resources. I urge the City Council to implement a temporary moratorium on Special Event Fee waivers. I am also directing the CAO to draft a policy to reduce or eliminate the City subsidy for services at special events and for-profit venues."

Not Zuma Dogg...but Mayor Antonio Villagrosa. Man, with a comment like that, he must be running for mayor, or something.

I can save the city in excess of $250,000,000.00 - that's over one-quarter of a billion dollars, for you LAUSD dropouts who might be dollar-value challenged.
