Thursday Hotsheet at 3 a.m.

Gorillas are back in Griffith Park today.

The primates' new habitat for not-quite-humanity cost $19 million. You get the feeling, when it would have cost less to build each ape a westside condo apiece, and they already had the land, that someone was run up a tree on this one---and it wasn't any ape.

The great apes were furloughed to Denver while their digs were being upgraded. It was a good thing for them that they already owned.

If you were wondering what the Former Fishwrap of Record also known as the Los Angeles Times might look like with an out-of-town mobile home merchant at the helm---your terrifying future has already arrived.

I have no idea what kind of editorial board vote went down to put this left rail ed on growth at the top of the column a couple of days ago, but here's the conclusion:

"In the rest of the city too, it's time to figure out how to make room for more.
"

Los Angeles is already more dense than New York City---and we mean that in a couple of ways. Editorials that call for more growth in every corner of the city are completely irresponsible.

Must be the only way the Times has left to hope for new subscribers.

Providence Holy Cross gets more beds and an ICU. The bigger news, however, is that the vote marked a defeat for Alarcon, who had tried to stop the project. But the better news is that actual politicking was seen in Council Chamber. The people who voted against Alarcon were actually in the minority, but you need ten votes to overturn a Planning Commission action.

° ° ° ° °

In my estimation, the weekly Downtown News keeps shaming the quotidien fishwraps on downtown news---this story on the way the homeless are gamed to sign ballot petitions was a good example. Tonight, the DN's Jon Regardie moderates a good panel for the LA Press Club on how small newspapers are eating larger fishwrap's lunch. It's $10 if you're not a member; hope to see some of you there. There's a networking session too; I know, big deal, but...sometimes it pays to meet scribes before they meet you.

I am participating in the Run for Her run and walk at Cedars Sinai this Sunday. You are invited to contribute or participate as well.

Run for Her is one of the most important charity events that hits the streets of Los Angeles; so many women get diagnosed with ovarian cancer at a late stage, because there is no good early detection mechanism yet. Also, someday try this: go to a public library and try to find a book on ovarian cancer---they may have one, but typically they have none. Please help our local researchers.

A little paraphrase from today's L.A. Times:

The other bad news for the man once dubbed "America's Latino" is that the government tends to take its sweet time putting corruption cases together, especially in high-profile prosecutions...

Word is getting out that it is a doozy, Parke. This time you are even involved.

Notice how nobody is gearing up to run for City Attorney, but people are gearing up for mayor?

And the story is it started with Vignali. Oh oh!!

The idiot council members didn't think LA was ever in danger of a terrorist attack. In fact, they bulked at giving LAPD 30 officers they needed in the Homeland Security unit. Even Bitter Bernie said they don't need more cops. Well think again IDIOTS!!!

...Exclusive: FBI: Al Qaeda May Strike U.S. Shopping Malls in LA, November 08, 2007
Richard Esposito and Vic Walter Report:
The FBI is warning that al Qaeda may be preparing a series of holiday attacks on U.S. shopping malls in Los Angeles and Chicago, according to an intelligence bulletin distributed to law enforcement authorities across the country this morning.
The alert said al Qaeda "hoped to disrupt the U.S. economy and has been planning the attack for the past two years."

Law enforcement officials tell ABCNews.com that the FBI received the information in late September and declassified it yesterday for wide distribution.

This from the "WWG,

During today's discussion of the expansion at Holy Cross hospital in the Northeast Valley, Councilman Richard Alarcon made City Hall reporters sit up in their chairs and look at each other. Alarcon got their attention by allowing that he and his new wife, Flora Montes de Oca, hadn't decided if they were going to have their baby at Holy Cross. A lot of people in the council chambers weren't aware the Alarcons were expecting.

I am not sure if the L.A. zoo needs any more jack-asses (I don't speak spanish) in the zoo.

Joe Mailander's credibilty is going down fast, after coming to this blog.

This blog is innuendo and rumor central. When it's not blaming the midget mechista mayor and mexicans for every problem in Los Angeles.

I think that it is time for those people that support illegal aliens to start taking responsibility with what they are supporting. For example: If you are one of those, start by giving them a place at your home, give them shelter, food, medical insurance etc. Support all their needs. Start helping one, then this one will bring his/her partner, then their children, parents, brothers, sisters and those in turn will bring their children, parents, brothers, sisters and again those will bring their parents and so on … How many would you be able to fit in your home? How long would you have them in your home? How long will you be able to support them with the sources you have?

Many of these illegal aliens are here because of need, not because they want to be here. They miss their homes, their families and way of life. If you truly want to help them you need to support a VOICE that tells the Mexican government and other governments, that they must take care of their citizens and our government needs to support this action. This would be one of the solutions to stop the rampant growth in our communities.

Ask yourself, where we are going to get more water, more electricity, more etc. Think of China they are overcrowded. They have limited couples to have more than one child, are we ready for that?

We need to have common sense and do not allow our politicians to sell us out, so they can get votes.

Well, thanks for suggesting that at least at some point I had some.

The City needs this blog; that's why I'm here. I wish I could be here more. You may find the blog a little gossipy--but that's the Internet, it's interactive, not static. If there's a better, truer story than the one offered here, that one will quickly rise as the true narrative.

Also, it doesn't happen very often that a political press release is simply reprinted here. It happens very often elsewhere, in formats that smudge your hands with ink. I'd submit that there's far more truth to be found on any given day here than in the posturing of most politically-issued press releases.

News from "Southern Boyle Heights"

East LA Residents Oppose Expansion of Toxic Waste Plant
Some 300 people marched through the East Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights last night demonstrating against the Industrial Service Oil Company Incorporated. Gabriel San Roman reports.

The massive plant, which has been managing an oil and anti-freeze recycling facility for more than 20 years, has directly petitioned the State of California'S Department of Toxic Substances for a permit to expand the range of toxic materials it can process. Local resident say the company petitioned the state directly in order to circumvent local land use regulations. Roberto Cabrales works with Communities for a Better Environment. (audio) "They're trying to basically expand the project without really getting the proper permits. They're skipping the city and trying to get permits otherwise. They've been running with temporary permits for a really long time and it's time for them to cut the pollution. The community doesn't need any more pollution. They're trying to expand it and the community needs less pollution." Several concerned residents and agencies have filed petitions against the expansion permit, citing public health and safety concerns. The neighborhood's local city councilmember is pressing the state's Department of Toxic Substances to hold a public forum on the matter. I'm Gabriel San Roman for Free Speech Radio News.

TESCO opens in Eagle Rock

The first in a chain of new, smaller neighborhood grocery stores has opened in Eagle Rock.

"Fresh-n-Easy" CEO Tim Mason says starting pay is 10-dollars an hour, with benefits, and says all the employees must work at least 20 hours a week. He says about half the workers will be full-time.

Protesters outside led by the L.A. Federation of Labor complained the stores were capping the work-week at 20 hours and accused the market's parent company of reneging on promises of working wages and benefits.

Dozens of "Fresh-n-Easy" stores are planned in Southern California

Koreatown: Glitter Babies Vs. Thugs

http://www.laweekly.com/news/news/koreatown-glitter-babies-vs-thugs/17630//

“It’s a rough neighborhood,” concedes the doorman, a tall, heavily tattooed ex-New Yorker named Neal Schofield.

It’s not so much the douche bags that are a worry, it’s the gangsters. In Koreatown these days, predatory hoodlums — including both Asian and Latino gang members — seem to be waging a high-stakes game of one-upmanship with the monied forces of new development.

All the while, Koreatown is grappling with what some say is worsening street violence. During the first two weeks of October, within a mile radius of one gleaming block of high-rises on Wilshire Boulevard, there were 11 aggravated assaults, seven violent robberies and a murder, according to Los Angeles Police Department crime maps. Some attacks are gang on gang, but innocent diners and club-hoppers are also targets. Flashy young Koreans, in particular, are a temptation to bad guys because of their cultural affinity for carrying cash.

“You don’t want to walk around in Koreatown — it’s dangerous,” says Lily Kim, 33, a reporter for the 200,000-circulation Korea Times. “I write those crime stories.”

Every Christmas, she writes about savvy gangsters and muggers who make holiday “business trips” to Koreatown to prey on locals, Kim says. Ethnic conflicts give rise to even more outbreaks of violence.

Can't believe those dummies marching in Eagle Rock against Tesco's new stores.

They're fabulous as anyone who's been to England or Europe knows, the prices of a Trader Joe's or Walmart megastore food court, but the quality of a deli or fine bakery

Sounds like a fair wage to me and if they say employees must work at least 20 hrs a week, that doesn't mean a cap of 20 hours. They must have never learned English from those Mecha schools we're paying for as part of LAUSD. And if they don't want to work there, don't.

What happened to that post, anyway? Here one minute, gone the next --

Nice to see some attempt to distance yourselves from Bernie's personality problems. How about following suit: just like he lost to Bratton, you all lost to Antonio -- focus on the issues not the personalities already.

Homeland "Security"'s dream come true ... someone who BELIEVES their government! Astonishing!

I was just watching the news and that stinking, lowlife, cholo, enemy agent of Mexico Mayor Villar was not only doing one of his boring, useless photo op appearances to discuss this big holiday "terror" threat, but the stinking greaser actually had the GALL to follow his drivel up by repeating the same garbage in SPANISH! The station cut him off at that point ... no use risking the awakening and angering of the lemmings!

Gee, I haven't seen the terror threat in any papers but read it here this morning. Could the Mayor be getting his info from Mayor Sam??? Antonio has a Muslim as his Homeland Security Director and all the FBI guys in Westwood think that's hilarious. They even call Antonio a gang banger cholo Mayor with no class.

The terror threat warning is in all the papers and news channel websites, dum dums. Nothing specific and this comes up every holiday season, but if this stuff happened in London, Madrid and Casablanca as well as New York, it's far from an idle threat. The FBI has caught some people on the verge, both coming over from Canada and in Germany.

The real lemmings are the ones who think it's cool to let our anti- terror facility sit idle because we don't have the 50 dedicated cops to staff it. Unless you think Bratton is a fool, too.

So, 19 million for gorillas and 40 million for elephants, while the mayor wants to impose a tax to make more money for the city.

This is the same mayor that promised to shut down the elephant exhibit. 40 million could get you a few more cops, doncha think?

Too bad we can't sue politicians for false advertising because that is what broken campaign promises are. Hey, maybe I'll sue and get a nice settlement.

Don't give Bitter Bernie any ideas.

Next thing, he'll raid the coffers of the zoo to "balance the budget" that the other depts. couldn't manage.

Then he'll keep encouraging and inciting lawsuits against the LAPD, LAFD and every city dept. like DOT, costing the city millions more.

Bernie can't be too concerned about the city's balance. The city paid a hefty sum on the acquisition of a private business location to build an animal shelter. LA paid for the land and relocation of the businesses (furniture or luggage). Then Bernie took the land back from the city and gave it to another private business (interestingly, also luggage or furniture). He grabbed it from the city for one of his donors. This delayed construction since the city had to look for another location Meanwhile construction costs escalated and the city had to pay more to the engineers for new plans. The city lost close to 25 million because of Bernie

Rather than taking a free, hourlong flight on the world's largest aircraft, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other local dignitaries will have to settle for touring the plane on the runway.

The jaunt - taking off from LAX with a quick return - was grounded this week because it would have violated a state law and city ethics provisions that keep politicians from accepting extravagant gifts, according to an opinion from the City Attorney's Office.

The trip aboard the Airbus A380 was expected to demonstrate how the behemoth aircraft operates, coinciding with a series of tests scheduled for later this month at Los Angeles International Airport.

But transportation companies are prohibited from granting free passes or discounts to anyone holding office in California, according to the state constitution.

Violators could be removed from office.

Holy cow batman, the adulterer Alarcon is going to decide whether to have his baby at the evil Holy Cross Hospital.

What a joke!!! Alarcon's head is so far up his ass he needs an asspendectomy just to breath. The neigborhood activists who let themselves be used to advance a stupid unions cause should feel cuckolded by Alarcon, but again Alarcon has had a lot of practice cuckolding his ex-wife and the voters. After all he divorced his ex-wife when she refused to run for Council.

Alarcon is the worst type of politician imaginable. He makes Villaraigosa look like an choir boy. At least Villaraigosa thinks he is looking out for the best interests of Los Angeles. Alarcon only looks out for his on best interest. Vendira a su abuela si le daban una contribucion politica (he would sell out his grandmother for a political contribution).

The Providence Holy Cross is not a union issue, just because the media tried to make it look like that.

After all, who had more union there? Those "bad" neighbors and the CARE coalition who are trying to do the right thing or the big bad hospital, who will be using union to build the expansion (or at least they say that now)....you guessed it. The hospital.

Sue the city. It's the only way to get anything done.

The union opponents to the hospital's expansion, and demanding the forty million dollar EIR, were virtually all Hispanics with accents or no English at all. People who couldn't understand the full ramifications of demanding such a costly, time-consuming thing when negotiation in good faith over mitigations would have been faster, cheaper and of benefit to the community. It's always the socialist/ uneducated types, with their leftie/ Hispanic-favoring leaders like Alarcon, who operate independently of society at large.

today, I had to go to the area where this hospital is located. As it is, there is much traffic going into the hospital or the many medical providers surrounding the area. Although I agree that a more thorough review is needed, the hospital beds are equally needed as well. It is sad that we will have to live with a short changed decision. Instead of digging his hills, Alarcon should have looked for the middle road to compromise and provide our communities with a better hospital. How can you argue on such needed services? to top it off, a union is in the middle of this mess, Alarcon should have been more savvy that he would get egg on his face. Huizar, nahhh! it does not surprise anyone, such a looser puppet!
