Santa Monica to LA: Fuck You and Your Little Dog Too!

LAist has an interesting post following an item in the Los Angeles Times last week.

Santa Monica has banned dogs from LA in their dog park - even those who live across the street - just over the border in the Los Angeles communities of Mar Vista and Venice. If you don't have "papers" from Santa Monica, you can't bring your dog in.

However, if you are a human being who doesn't have papers from the US and are here illegally, I presume you are more than welcome in Santa Monica.

Residents of Venice and Mar Vista think that perhaps we should ban Santa Monicans from driving on LA streets and stop shopping at Santa Monica businesses.

Santa Monica benefits from being next door to Los Angeles but doesn't hold up their end of the bargain. Fuck 'em.

Santa Monica tried to do this kind of number once before, ironically in pretty much the same location. They wanted to build a big office park on what they called the "Airport Residual Land." They had it designed so that there was no entrance or exit on the western end of the project - which would have drawn traffic from and sent it to Santa Monica neighborhoods.

Instead, they had all the traffic going onto Centinela on the eastern end - just across the city boundary in Los Angeles. So Santa Monica was going to get all the project revenue while L.A. was going to get all the traffic. How convenient!

Former L.A. City Councilmembers Ruth Galanter and the late Marvin Braude threatened to withhold the street use permits necessary to allow the project to connect to Centinela. That didn't stop the cynics in Santa Monica City Hall, who signed a development agreement with the developer, essentially locking in the project.

But then the voters of Santa Monica, a little cynical themselves, voted to abandon the project and demanded a new park instead, which is what they ended up with - the popular Clover Park.

This new dog park, while not strictly a part of Clover Park, appears to have rekindled the "good neighbor spirit" originally inspired by the Residual Land Project with this L.A. doggie ban. The folks across the line in L.A. have long memories and this blatant insult won't be forgotten.

Sam,

Don't pick on Santa Monica. The poor City is surrounded by the most hazardous threat to public safety in the U.S. -- The City of Los Angeles.

ZD has given public comment at Santa Monica City Hall as well, to warn them of all the problems the City of LAs high density policy will be having on them.

You think all the homeless dispursing to Santa Monica, more than ever are Santa Monica naitives?

You think all the traffic problems is because of Santa Monica residents?

Don't get into a pissing match with Santa Monica. They're stuck living next door to a non-compliant, negligent, shady, corrupt neighbor. And he's bringing down the property value of the whole region.

I think they've had enough of Shadirosa and his federally challenged behavior. So they can say it's about a dog park...but when your girlfriend starts yelling at you about leaving the toilet seat up, it ain't about toilet seats.

AND NOW...I AM GOING TO JUMP ON THE SANTA MONICA BLUE BUS (a superior system to anything Los Angeles provides) and take it Downtown (LA) to blast the City of it's behavior this past year.

AND KEEP YOUR F*CKING LOS ANGELES LOW-CLASS DOGS OUT OF SANTA MONICA'S DOG PARK.

THEY CAN'T HELP IT IF THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES IS TURNING EVERY SQUARE INCH OF PARK SPACE INTO A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. SANTA MONICA CAN'T HELP IT THAT THE MAYOR'S BUDGET INCLUDES $0.00 FOR OPEN PARK SPACE?

There's a reason Santa Monica is better than LA...They operate the City with respect, compassion and dignity. Something I've never seen at LA City Hall. So don't complain when they want to prevent illegal dog immigration into their parks.

Zuma thanks for giving me a good laugh. Do you think Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Culver City would put up with this bullshit illegal crap that LA is? Hell no. They give homeless people money to take the bus and come downtown to Skid Row. Why aren't these assholes protesting in their cities.

At least the shady bastards are gonna pass THIS today...Don't think it should be TOO contraversial.

This whole dog analogy is hilariously similar to people problems.

CONSIDERATION OF MOTION (ALARCON - CARDENAS - WESSON) relative to mandating the spaying and neutering of domestic cats and dogs by the time the pet is four months old, with specific exceptions for licensed breeders, consistent with provisions of Assembly Bill (AB) 1634. Recommendation for Council action:

REQUEST the City Attorney, with the assistance of the Animal Services Department, to prepare an ordinance to mandate the spaying and neutering of domestic cats and dogs by the time the pet is four months old, with specific exceptions for licensed breeders, consistent with provisions of AB 1634; said ordinance shall include provisions for assisting pet owners earning less than 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. (Public Safety Committee waived consideration of the above matter)

They should build a giant wall to keep the interloping dogs out of SM. That'll learn 'em.

Excellent point and post, Sam.

I suspect this restriction is unconstitutional, but haven't had enough coffee yet to figure out the exact problem. Equal protection?

Alaska once tried to limit state benefits -- oil royalties -- to people born in the state, as I recall, and that was struck down.

This would seem to be an extreme case of "gated community." What's next? Will Santa Monica reserve its beaches for residents and people who can show they're staying at a hotel (i.e., tourists)?

Not a bad idea, Mr. Moore! I might place your proposal before my Councilman; our crime rate resulting from your city's gangbangers will be cut quite dramatically!

How about asking Dubya to do a little shock and awe on Santa Monica, sink it into the bay and give the fine folks in Venice, Mar Vista and West LA some beachfront property y'all!

There are some people that actually are doing some good in Santa Monica. Just because the homeless can't afford the rent controlled apartments, don't throw the baby out with the bath water!

The dog park thing is sort of silly, Santa Monicans are a bit like San Francisicans when it comes to dogs, giving more space to canines than kids.

But Santa Monica is overrun by Los Angelenos in terms its park space and in the schools. Hundreds of LAUSD kids, maybe thousands, beg, borrow and steal their way into SMMUSD. Hundreds of Los Angelenos are members of the numerous youth and adult sports leagues Santa Monica offers.

Santa Monicans support the schools and the fields with their taxes.

The reverse is simply not true.

The no LA dogs thing is, in my opinion, a by product of how the other fields in Santa Monica are overrun by non-residents (including the school fields).

This may sound minor, but the upkeep on those fields is very expensive and they are all in terrible shape due to over use.

Besides Brentwood dawgs glow in the dark from the radiation at Barrington dog park per that pseudo scientific twit wammabe reporter Michael Collins.

Councilman Rosendahl is milking the scandal for all its worth, but there is skeleton in his closet - he gave Collins an award while heading LA Press Club.
