Latest Fire Update: Observatory in Jeopardy

We pray that our beloved, beautiful Griffith Observatory be spared. Please send your good thoughts. The LA Fire Department is doing a FANTASTIC job! Please keep them in your thoughts too.

Portions of Los Feliz are being evacuated and the power is out.

If the community has any needs please feel free to post them here.

Sam, I hate to tell you, but that's total BS. See my ironic update to my post. I have the perfect angle on between the fire and the Observatory and it hasn't been threatened all day---even though the TV coverage would make it seem that way.

I hate to say this, but I'm beginning to wonder if someone at the City didn't lean on media not to go with the fire story until 8 p.m. news. While the City was busy protecting its own venues around 7 p.m., I think it came at the expense of the real action north of Commonwealth Ave, which is in danger right now.

Joseph you are on target. I should know better than to believe the MSM. Thanks for the update.

Lets hope the theatre makes it.

I saw the same report. BTW, the fire PIO has a future in television news, but I digress. Dante's View is a garden area that was created by late joseph Turner. You can tell that Labonge is taking this fire in a very personal manner. I remember LaBonge use to help in maintaining Dante's View. when I was a child, I use to go to Boy's Camp which was evacuated today.

I was just at the evac center and there were more media than evacuees at first. Then they began arriving. A guy (surprisingly young) who appeared to know a lot told me to pass on what the media are missing: that evacuees should not hesitate to bring pets if they can, and that there will also be a medication control point for people who need their meds. Mercifully, I missed the camera hound clowns.

Lynn told me about the walleyed pike of a jogger from the Church of Scientology, helping the situation as only she could by turning it into a recruiting op.

I can't bear to watch myself because every time I've looked at the TV I'm just wondering what the hell fire they're reporting.

Our side of the hill is done burning, it looks like, and Atwater's side is like a big glowing ember in the fireplace.

We all have our favorite places in Griffith Park. I've been painting four certain sycamores about once a month over the past year. They're just south of the Greek, so they may have made it. As likely did the first hole at Roosevelt and that big redwood tree back of the green that everyone swings for from the tee and falls about a hundred yards short of.

There's a lot of old growth right in the canyon north of the Greek and on the hill east of it. There is a redwood grove and pines. I'll be really sad for all those if any are gone.

Why does California always catch on fire? I don't get it. This seems to be a regular thing. Why? Don't people know it's not normal -- at least not in the rest of the world -- for large portions of real estate to burst into flames?

What do we do about this? I gather there are already laws on the books about clearing brush. Perhaps it would be more efficient and safe to enforce the laws than to wait for, say, new obervatories to burn down.

In any event, I'm sure we all took great comfort from the Mayor's fire photo-ops, for both the 10:00 p.m. AND 11:00 p.m. fires. Any bets on whether he'll be on the scene for the morning shows?

Cali burns baby! So does most of the southwest in these conditions. Whether manmade or a lightening strike, droughts and pyros have been
causing this for years!

Several months ago, the water fountain at Dante's View stopped working. Did they fix it? Of course not!

Try several years ago.

Four thirty AM and the west end of Griffith Park, northwest of the Observatory, has a fire going. Everything else looks calm now.

I don't know that the homeless guy has been identified or even if he's still suspected of lighting the fire, but I imagine everyone who knows the park has the same guy in mind, an old, friendly potbellied guy typically in a black sweatshirt tank top who seems mildly schizo (mutters to self---but then again, so do I) and who maintains a shopping cart that he drags down into Los Feliz Village.

Those asshole politicans don't come out for the May 1 mess but there they are for a fire. I was waiting for Antonio to grab the media's mike and start talking. He really does have psych problems. He didn't want LaBonge to get all the camera time. I hate to say this but KARMA. Who is Antonio going to blame now for the fire? The winds are what is hurting them from controlling it.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen (coughs from smoke):

The crew and I offer our condolences to you on the destruction of Dante's Peak and the Bird Sanctuary. The loss of those two pieces of real estate are truly a loss to those of us who love the Park.

And bloody hell yes thank the Fire Department as well as the Green Shirt CERTS. There are some pirates among them and we salute you sirs for your volunter spirit.
