Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Wednesday

North Hollywood businessman Vic Viereck has a good letter in Tuesday's Daily News. Viereck puts one of the causes for the lack of "affordable housing" in Los Angeles squarely on city leaders whose "rent stabalization" ordinances have had the unforseen effect of taking rental stock out of the housing market as property owners find they can get a better return on their investment by condo conversions. Good point.

Good news on the MTA front. First off, the agency has put off fare increases for a year, which is good timing considering the number of new riders that rising gas prices have driven to public transit. Secondly, a bill that would have reduced the City of LA's influence on the agency's board has been shelved for now by its author, State Senator Bob Margett. This was the same bill that no one from the City bothered to show up to Senate hearings to oppose.

Mike Qualls, a former official in the Hahn Administration, and previously a reporter for the new defunct Herald-Examiner, has died. Qualls, 63, a Vietnam veteran, started working for James Hahn when the former Mayor was City Attorney.

Still smarting from the endorsement of State Senate candidate Cindy Montanez by Mayor Villaraigosa, City Councilman Alex Padilla is saying so what. With all due respect to the mayor, the two senators from California are backing me," Padilla told the LA Times.

CHINA

Chinese weather specialists used chemicals to engineer Beijing's heaviest rainfall of the year, helping to relieve drought and rinse dust from China's capital, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Technicians with the Beijing Weather Modification Office fired seven rocket shells containing 163 cigarette-size sticks of silver iodide over the city's skies on Thursday, Xinhua said.

Good for Padilla. Two of the most powerful Democrat Senators who are women endorse him. They don't belong to the old boys club but think more of his qualifications then Cindy's.

An unidentified prankster has developed a personal Web page for Villaraigosa on the popular Myspace.com site.

To access it takes some dexterity, however, and the long Internet address of:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cffm?useaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=55873025.

What do you expect Alex to say? He'd be much better off with Mayor V's endorsement, but the Mayor is giving him pay back.

The reporters at city hall must be shaking their heads. How can city council members not have a clue about the Kennedy-Sensbrenner bill on illegal immigration and need more time to figure out what it states? I think the average educated citizen knows more then they do.

Jim Alger lost the re-election as president of the Northridge West Neighborhood Council.

He was replaced by Dennis De Young.

I noticed that was one event that Alger did not post on his website, and that Mayor Sam didn't run.

Next chance to see Alex and Cindy:
Friday, May 12, 11:30 a.m. Mission Area Police Station, Mission Hills.

To reserve, call 818-367-1177. Lunch from the Bear Pit $20 ($25 without a reservation.) Sponsored by the Sylmar Chamber of Commerce.

In previous meet ups, most have observed that Alex knows little about the job he wants and has little knowledge about his current position.

A lot of community folks have made reservations and the questions could get very hot for Alex. This is something that most political junkies might want to observe.
