Open Thread for Sunday

The LA Times covers the immigrant story of the families of four Los Angeles City Council members, Tony Cardenas, Jose Huizar, Alex Padilla and Ed Reyes. Each of these four men went from an immigrant experience to serving on the Los Angeles City Council in one generation (Cardenas, Padilla and Reyes were born in the US; Huizar was born in Mexico).

A few common themes run through all four of these families' experience. One, from the information provided, it sounds like their parents migrated legally (some of the parents were born here and later spent time in Mexico) one way or another.

Another element is that all the families worked very hard, emphasized family values and good citizenship. Very few of them took advantage of government welfare programs and some of the parents (as well as Councilman Cardenas himself) had started family businesses.

All in all, sounds very Republican to me. How did these guys get brainwashed by the Democrats?

A: because Republicans don't like latinos.. or asians or blacks for that matter. That's why I left the GOP. Was tired of the lip service at conventions, then the private comments about the problems they told me "your people" were causing. It was insulting. That's when I went Dem. Better to be a member of a party that respects you....instead of blames "your people" as scapegoats.

A: Because of greedy, know-it-all Rethuglicans like you, Mayor Sam.

Me-first, English-only, no-minimum-wage, xenophobic bullshit is just too good for some of us. ;)

Oh please!

The Democrats want to keep Blacks and Latinos down on the plantation. Just ask Hilary Clinton.

There are some dinosaurs in the Republican party but they are far more opening to any minority whom chooses to join.

The Democrats are a victims party that seeks to make Latinos and blacks seem like they're victims when they're not. They're more succesful than ever, and as they begin to pay more taxes, the rank and file will leave the Democratic party, in fact, its already happening.

That was a very positive story on the councilmen and how their parents did the right thing and all became US citizens. They should be an example to all those who are demanding they have rights without having to put the effort. These parents should be very proud of their sons. Regardless of what you think about Padilla, Cardenas, Huizar and Reyes they have accomplished success being on the city council and I for one applaud them.

LA Times does not have the journalistic integrity to profile the family background of Tony Valdez of Channel 11, who came out 6 days ago as an unbashed pro-Mexican reconquista bigot. Exposing Tony Valdez's upbringing and his true beliefs would be counter productive to the agenda of LA Times.

People need to chill. Mexicans and other immigrants from South America are just doing the same thing that waves of immigrants over the last 250 years have done. They assimilate but also change the culture by adding many of their own customs and values. The Country is not going to go to hell because of immigrants. The young people in the streets last Monday will be all be the targeted consumer demographic in about 15 years when they are making money. It's only scarey if you think that the size of the pie is set and can't be expanded and that is just not true. Our economy can and will grow and as long as people are willing to work hard and become educated, the standard of living for everyone as a whole will rise. By the way, I am a White, middle-aged Republican.

7:33pm you have to be kidding!!!
"work hard and become educated" Some of these illegals have been here 15 yrs and refuse to learn to speak English, apply for citizenship and educate themselves. They love playing the victims. Take a ride in the minority areas of LA and you will see the blight and garbage they live in because they're too damn lazy to clean up. They are making tax free cash every day without paying taxes and hurting businesses who have been in the community legally for years. Why didn't they protest the gang violence and graffitti in their neigborhoods. Guaranteed that most of the gang members are from illegal parents. MS13 is the most dangerous notorious gang who extorts money from the street vendors and yet no organization MAPA, SEIU, or others have done anything about it. I couldn't agree more about Tony Valdez. He didn't apologize for his racist remarks on air. He got too emotional and personal as a reporter on air and should be fired. Oh, I'm a democrat and Latino. The Times story states that these council member's parents came here for a better life but then got their citizenship. They didn't expect a free easy ride with services given to them.

It is interesting that most of these politicians come from fine, upstanding families and live very conservatively personally - but they advocate irresponsible behaivor and lack of accountability from others.

Immigrants from latin countries that formerly had robust economies and strong domestic public school systems such as Cuba and Nicaragua easily assimilate and they come with a desire to become Americans.

By in large only the dregs of Mexican society, the uneducated come to the United States with a strong animus against Americans that has been purposely inculcated by an inherently by a succession of corrupt Mexican governments that encourage remissions to the home country year after year. Most Mexicans rarely if never assimilate because they do not value education and have a welfare mentality that 7:33PM tries to dismiss.

By contrast the current Salvadoran government realizes that remissions from the USA only short term economic jolt and represents a loss of the productive members of El Salvador and is trying to encourage emigres to return. Given a choice most Central Americans want to go back home if economic and political conditions stabilize at home.

If American politicians democrat and republican alike spent less time pandering to the Mexican government and took a hard line on illegal immigration, Mexico would be forced to reform. If El Salvador and Nicaragua can by diplomacy forced become more democratic, its not unreasonable to put the same high expectations on the Mexican government. Mexico is 80% or more of illegal immigration problem.

Mayor Sam

It's forbidden for a minority to be Republican in Los Angeles.

These politicians might could be great republicans

Mayor AV does it intelligently. He swears he's democrat, but the truth is he's not.

Read between the lines of his speeches.

He is Republican in Democrat rags.
Archie is right all along.
Democrats are fools
