Butcher Endorsement Official

ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENT
Labor Leader backs Alger

February 1, 2006 - Los Angeles- As the race for the 38th district seat of the California State Assembly heads toward the nomination deadline, Jim Alger (D-Northridge) picked up a key endorsement, and with it more momentum today.

"I support a candidate willing to stand up for working men and women--especially city workers" said Julie Butcher, General Manager of SEIU Local 347 "The work of Unions and Neighborhood Councils are inextricably linked."

Butcher said that although SEIU 347 is not endorsing any candidate in the race, she has thrown her personal support to Alger.

"Jim Alger took on the DWP and brought LA's Neighborhood Councils a substantive historic agreement-in writing- about how the DWP should interact with 'the people' in the future."

For his part Alger said he was happy to have earned the trust of Butcher.

"Julie has shown once again that she has the courage to stand up for what she believes", Alger said, "I am humbled that she believes in me."

Eluding to what will undoubtedly be a battle over the 38th District, Butcher quipped "Though it may be like rooting for Seattle in the Super Bowl, I personally can't resist."

Alger promised a fight to the end.

"For those who believe this seat is one that will be given to them - hear this, not on my watch. I plan on taking this race right to my opponents door. The time of Democrats rolling over in this Assembly District has come to an end", Alger concluded.

SOMEONE seems a little hostile about Jim getting this huh? An opponent maybe?

I'll be a Monkeys' Uncle. Nice hat trick Alger. You know, if you had a dime for everything they said you "couldn't" do...

Anyway I am not a big fan of labor but my hats off to you friend. Of course by now we would expect nothing less.

Jim is always being told he can't do things... usually right before he does it!

I have seen very little hatred toward him, except from some idiots who wish they were half the man he is. At an event last week in Simi Valley he had the crowd on their feet.

There is something going on in the 38th.

Secretary of State
Voter Reg Stats
Jan. 3, 2006
Dem 34.88%
Rep 43.80%
DTS 17.15%

I wouldn't care if his name was William Jefferson Clinton, there is no Democrat on earth that could win this seat. Do your thing Jim, but the money will never be available to you in the 38th AD!

a 9 point spread you find unwinnable? With a Democrat with crossover appeal? I wouldn't be so quick to count Jim out. 17% dline to states ... could break either way.

He need 11%, either in the DTS or crossover or both. Combine that with any energizing of the dem base and it's all about turnout.

A nine point spread is definitely winnable despite what Mitchell says.

This district has lots of soccer moms and dads.

Its not a red state.

A typical union liberal wouldn't win, but a moderate Democrat has a shot.

Particularly considering that Smythe is like way too conservative for the district.

Smyth is also one lazy bastard. Since Schwarzenegger doesn't seem to be too appealing to "the base" this time 'round, he's going for the ol' "harass the immigrants" play. Not that there's no "Minutemen" faction in Santa Clarita, but jesus it'd be nice if that guy came up with an original idea once in a while.

I give Jim credit for trying and wanting to do something positive. More neighborhood councils should have representatives like him who work hard for their neighborhoods. No wonder CM Smith and his croonies are worried. Good luck Jim.

I would do her in a New York Minute. I saw her at a party on election night, she was wearing this little plaid skirt... How the hell does Alger get a girl that hot?

Anon 9:33 PM,
The thing is this race is a win-win for Alger. If he wins the primary (we should not consider anything to be a done deal but these endorsements are pimpin') and then wins the general he's an Assemblymember who has substantial influence back home and who can move up. If he loses but wins in Los Angeles County (as Jon Lauritzen did in 2000) or even loses both places, he has increased his name recognition for a Council race or another local race in the future and through the campaign has expanded both his donor list and his list of possible volunteers for a future campaign. And since he's running in district in which Repubs have an advantage it to some extent might his raise his profile in the SFV Democratic Party because he 'took one for the team'. As long comes he comes out of the race without much personal debt and as long as he can afford to (which he can otherwise he wouldn't ber running) to run it's a win-win for him politically.
