What's Up In CD 15?

Janice Hahn was elected as Councilwoman of the 15th District of the City of Los Angeles in June of 2001. The 15th District encompasses the communities of Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, San Pedro, Watts and Wilmington.

Councilwoman Hahn serves as the Chair of the Committee on Education & Neighborhoods where she works closely with the newly created citywide network of neighborhood councils to ensure that community stakeholders have a say in local issues. The Councilwoman also serves as Vice Chair of the Commerce, Energy & Natural Resources Committee, overseeing the Port of Los Angeles, LAX and the Department of Water & Power; as Vice Chair of the Board of Referred Powers; and as a member of the Audits & Government Efficiency Committee.

From 1997-99, Councilwoman Hahn served the 15th District as its elected representative on the Charter Reform Commission. Included in the new Charter are many elements championed by Councilwoman Hahn, including neighborhood councils, Area Planning Commissions, regular mandatory financial audits of all City departments and permanent local representation on the Harbor and Airport Commissions.

Councilwoman Janice Hahn is the daughter of the late Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn and the sister of former Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn. She is a lifelong resident of Los Angeles and lives in San Pedro. She has two sons Danny and Mark; and a daughter Katy who is married to John Yates. John and Katy recently gave the Councilwoman her second granddaughter, Brooklyn Kay, who joins her sister, McKenna Elise, who was born in June of 2003.

So what's up In CD 15?

"Brooklyn" is a horrible name for a girl. It's like naming a child "Reseda" or "Pasadena."

Janice is a good person, and a much better pol than her brother Jimmy. She, not Jimmy, is Kenny's natural heir.

But the loss of her brother as Mayor has affected her adversely; she lets it color her judgment, especially when dealing with things Antonio related.

If she can get over this, there may be a future for her after City Council; if not, she can join her brother in the private sector and live off her pension.

Politics is a body contact sport, and Jimmy was just not up to it. I hope that Janice can get over it and be the person she should be.

The jury is out.

Janice is a way better person that Jim is. Her heart is really in what she does and she makes the Hahn name proud.

While there has been some improvement in San Pedro a lot of us CD 15 residents are waiting for improvements in the Harbor Gateway, Wilmington and other neglected areas in CD 15. Residents really thought things would be upgraded with Hahns in both Council and the Mayor's offices. We're still waiting.

So far she has failed miserably to reduce the port's air pollution, which worsened under her and her brother's watch. Maybe the ILWU will help.

I can't even count how many times I heard people comment that the wrong sibling had run for mayor as a sign of the respect that people have for her skills and personality. Unfortunate that she will be tied down by her brother's loss.

Jancie Hahn does not need to wait for AV.

She has Big Time Name I.D.

PLUS

AV had too many broken promises.

She gave a really strong speech on air pollution at the "Faster Freight Cleaner Air" conference in Long Beach this morning, as did a lot of other people yesterday (MAV, S. David Freeman, ILWU brass, to name a few).

Now, if somebody will just follow up on this and make something actually happen, it will be progress.

Speaking to Janice's overall effect on the district, I can only say that it is a total change from the xenophobic bunker mentality of former Councilperson Rudy Svornich's terms. Her office is much more accessable than Rudy's, and she has begun the transition of the Council Office functioning in a less "Pedro centric" manner, although there is a long way to go in that arena.

Although the Harbor Cities and Wilmington seem to be getting more of the attention they deserve, I still feel that Watts & the Harbor area really should be two seperate districts, as they have so little in common, and it is difficult to serve both areas. Being Councilperson for CD 15 is a lot like being in charge of two seperate geographic districts, a challenge that no Councilperson in memory has been able to overcome.

On the Pedro side, where I live, there is more going on in town than ever before. Over a billion dollars in development projects are in process or proposed and there seems to be a plethora of committies, Neighborhod Councils, activists and community members all scraping to get some kind of grasp on the situation. Right now, I don't think anyone knows what the town is going to look like in five years, let alone ten or twenty.

Word on the street is that Janice is going to run for County Supervisor. She isn't making many "I'm going to run for mayor moves".

Tell Councilperson Hahn to name her third daughter "Bensonhurst" or better yet "Bronx." That will cover yet another borough in NYC. Then, when we all go to support the family at soccer games, we can give a Bronx cheer!!

What pretentious names.

Funny first post. My brother just named his second daughter Brooklyn.

It doesn't sound like Reseda or Pasadena.

It sounds more like Paris or Montana or Dakota.

If Janice Hahn ran for Supervisor, I would take bus loads of people to that district to campaign for her.

Knabe is worthless.

I'll reserve judgment until I see what she does about Bisno. I know he has given her campaign $$ and I hope she doesn't S.P. out.

Janice Hahn is a mean and vindictive pol -- just like her father was. He was loved by the constituents that he bought off with jobs at the County and King/Drew but he was disliked intensely by the dedicated professionals at the County who he continually threatened and harrassed. She is truly he father's daughter. Janice presents one personality to the community -- fighter for the underdog. To those who cross her, she is across the line mean and nasty. I wouldn't want to spend five minutes with her. She is not a good person.

Janice Hahn is a fun, bright, environmentalist who is very down to earth with a great sense of humor.

Nobody wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with her.

That Hahn press conference at Machado Lake with T-Bone Quinn was pathetic.

Knabe is a good supervisor, and I hope Mike Gin eventually runs for his seat.

Westsider, things always look different when you have an issue. Obviously LAX was your issue. Many other issues that I follow have Janice Hahn in favor of what I beleive in and Knabe the exact opposite.

I guess it's all issue related.
