Open Thread for Tuesday

On this day in 1986, the New York Mets defeat the Boston Red Sox due to Bill Buckner's famous error in Game 6 of the World Series and went on to win the championship two days later.

A year ago today we were blogging about Pat McOsker, civil service employees, and E-Hugs.

Why the hell doesn't the media ever cover stories about police officers being hurt by suspects? No guts. You know if this story was the other way around the media would be all over it.

OFFICER GRABBED BY PASSENGER, DRAGGED BY CAR AFTER TRAFFIC STOP.
Driver Arrested After He And Passenger Leave Car, Flee On Foot
A man who allegedly grabbed a police officer and dragged him alongside a vehicle for about 200 feet in south Los Angeles remained at large Tuesday morning, but the driver of the car that dragged the officer was in custody, authorities said.

The officer was in "good condition" after suffering a "minor to moderate leg injury," said Lt. Carlos Islaf of the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station.

The officer was standing next to the passenger window of the vehicle, which was occupied by two men, when the passenger appeared to be searching under his seat for a weapon, Islaf said.

The passenger then grabbed the officer by the arm and pulled him partially into the vehicle, Islaf said.

So, Dgarzilla -- you're there in the thick of it. Any idea why Mayor V. just discovered there's a problem in skidrow, when he was the councilmember for CD14 for two years prior?

Maybe he should have made Steve Lopez a field deputy?

Maybe there's still time. The CD14 leftover staff just did another round of musical chairs (the 4th fruit-basket-upset since he started his campaign for mayor).

oops 8-1

The mayor was here at a community meeting two years ago and we told him what was up. He was even quoted in the daily beat as saying that conntainment was a total failure.

He knew .

And he has been down here. But there weren't any photo ops for him to be here for at the time.

here is the other problem.

Jan Perry is the only councilmember that claims Skid row in her district. The other one in the 14th never claims that half of skid row is in the 14th. I tis an embarrassment , because it is an intractable problem. How do you say you have solved any problems , if you have skid row.

There are three types of welfasre reipients downtown., the millionaire or billionaire developer , the artist , and the sick and disabled. If the city does one for either one of those , the other to begin to compalin. So in essence it is a long hard road here to solve this problem. ANd of coure the politician doesn't want to upset any of them . HAhn cut cultural affairs or wanted to , look waht happened to him. The artists had a field day.

The answer having skid row in your district is an embarrassement. I actuality, skid row is neutral ground and all city council and MAyor should work in Unison. But Territorial autonomy is a big problem amongst the council people.

I don't have all of the answers , it is a complex issue.

Well summarized.

He knew, but there were no photo-ops at the time.

Bout says it all. What happens when the media exposure dies down again?

See above.

After watching AV operate in Cd14 for 2 years, I can guarantee you can get more from him and staff with vinegar, than honey.

If it's really critical (because you can only do it 1 or 2 times before they stop even taking our calls), risk embarrassing his administration. The communities in CD14 that sucker-punched him got far more done than the one's that kissed up, ponied up the campaign donations, and called him "daddy."

How pathetic that they will spend billions of dollars on Grand Avenue and around STaple Center but not build ONE DAMN HOUSING UNIT for the homeless. There is a ton of money in this city and council members have done nothing to help with this issue. All they ever do is create AD Hoc Committees.

New campaign $$ figures come out this week for CD14, yes?

AV's boy Jose better be adding a truckload of new money, the way they've spent it. If the "polls" are even close, they show that each new vote is costing him $300 - $400 to add in (assuming they actually vote). That's close to the max each OLD supporter can contribute, just to duplicate themselves once.

Dgarzila,

You completely understand how welfare works in America. It is not what everyone thinks and you summed it up in one sentence...

"There are three types of welfasre reipients downtown., the millionaire or billionaire developer , the artist , and the sick and disabled."

Read part of the Steve Lopez, Time piece with Villaraigosa and homeless.

Is this the same Steve Lopez that outed Alvin Parra from his political embarrassment of bribery?

Making sure the police are safe should be a priority. It stinks that suspects have the upper hand. But our new mayor will continue to make it easier for the criminal than those who enforce and follow the law. One more reason to recall him. But, how can you complain when you endorse his puppet?

Recall? Again?

I'd think after the last abysmal failure, you guys would shut up and go hide in a Saddam spider hole.
