BREAKING NEWS: When Neighborhood Councils Attack

All hell is breaking loose in Sylmar.

The Sylmar Neighborhood Council is now the first to be sued in the City of LA. Evangelist Maggie Campbell (Because we don't want to be sued, we'll call Evangelist Maggie Campbell whatever she wants), an Evangelist, is suing for "failing to allow her to practice her religion" because board members don't address her as "Evangelist Maggie Campbell" during council meetings. She is suing the Neighborhood Council for $4 Million dollars for "Civil Rights violations." The City Attorney has hired outside counsel at a reported $100,000.00 price tag.

(That's Greg Nelson in the photo, he's the head of the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment. His job is to deal with all these fun issues.)

We've heard there is a Council meeting scheduled this evening, but can't find any notice of it online. If there is a meeting, it should be a barn burner. For further info, check out some emails on the topic, as well as an allgeged complaint filed by Evangelist Maggie Campbell, over at MS2.

For somewhat related fun and games, look into the hellfire and brimstone that rained down on the Glassell Park NC some months ago when it's elected "church" rep, a local pastor, associated herself with the NC - by board designation - when issuing an invitation to the community to attend a Billy Graham crusade.

D.O.N.E. encouraged NCs to involve "faith" organizations in building and running these councils but (lets get real), once they're on board, the city of L.A. really doesn't want these people acting like or mentioning they ARE "people of faith."

Dog forbid!

(There is, after all, no god by Antonio... and Trujillo is his profit).

This is interesting, especially given the fact that the executive director of the City's Human Relations Commission, Rabbi Allen Freehling, utilizes his religious title, even on the City's website:

http://www.lacity.org/hra/exec.htm

He's actually a city employee, not to be confused with volunteers who may serve on commissions.

But can she sue because her colleagues "don't address her" by her religious title? Where does her freedom of religion end and others freedom of speech begin?

"Evangelist" is not comparable to "Rabbi" -- its more often than not a self-deignation.

Pastor, minister, reverend, maybe...

Otherwise, tough darts.

Maggie Campbell does not act in a christian manner, does she?

Why would anyone consider her a religious leader, if she pimps herself for money by suing.

OH, god forbid anyone who's religious should ever SUE, 3:54 p.m.?

Let's keep those bible-thumpers out of the courts, and back in their row houses, barefoot, civil right-less, and turning ALL their other cheekies, so we can JUST keep slapping them silly.

DAMN, in your little scripture book does it say, "You is now children of GOD, become doormats."

Freedom of/from/for/to religion means YOU now sit at the back 'o de bus and sing spirituals (VERY quietly), because if you DARE speak up about your rights, you're not being CHRIST-ian (just get up there and DIE on the cross, for crying out loud, so the rest of us can go about our bi'ness). SUE for hot coffee in your lap, SURE, but NOT is you've ever genuflected to anyone nut the gov'ment.

Check out the one about the money lenders in the temple, next time you're wanting to "characterize" how's we's pos-a be acting for ourselves.

3:41 - lots of religious leaders "self-designate."

Are you now going to determine which religious titles are official and which are not?

You should, however, start by developing a list of "approved" faiths and disregard the First Amendment.

3:54 - Fortunately in America one's right one's right to seek justice through the Courts is unrelated to one's freedom of religion.

I'm curious to know how her civil rights have been so horribly infringed and what unthinkable traumas the NC must have committed upon her to make this claim worth 4 million dollars. This is the kind of claim that, if there's a competent attorney on the other side, gets tossed out of court with fees, and possibly sanctions. In other words, let's wait until there's a lawsuit with merit before sounding the alarm on NC malfeasances that warrant legal action...

October 24, 2005 5:26 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Or I wonder, call me a Conspiracy Theorist, but wouldn't a lawsuit of this kind on the Neighborhood Councils be enough amunition for the Mayor to get rid of them.

Remember a month ago when Mayor Villaraigosa asked the NC's about the budget and most of them rejected the budget because it was one-sided towards taxes and rate hikes.

I think this is all a scheme to:
1)Make the Neighborhood Councils look bad.
2)Get the public siding on AV's corner about tax hike$$$.
3)Continue AV's 'street-cred' with the negro, "I mean Black" Community (Hey George Jefferson, you listening?)

5:26 - Good point. But why then hire outside counsel?

I can't believe what I'm about to say:

"You COULD be right, ARCHIE BUNKER" - expect for a couple things.

NCs don't need any help looking bad. They've written the book.

NCs in L.A. Black communities are some of the least dysfunctional. They make ones in more "diverse" communities look like whiney children, use thre money better, and have incorporated the NC structure into community life better.

Of course, we are talking about AV. . . so just because it's a BAD conspracy and doomed to backfire doesn't mean they didn't plan it --(probably just means his STAFF did).

AL Sharpton is a liar and pig. Nor is he a reverend.

That being said, if she has been ordained or went to a relgious school and is a minister does anyone have to call her by some title she made up for herself.

You don't call people doctor unless the've earned it.

Now, if she prevails, we can all call ourselves MAYOR.

As one of the defendents in Maggie Campbell's lawsuit I can assure you this is not, nor ever has been about religious freedom.

It is merely a case of someone's ego getting way, way out-of-control. The consitution does not guarantee an individual a right to "pick your own title" and all must address you by it.

If that were the case, then you must all now call me, "MR. Fabulous".

Get out more often, there's plenty of african americans in that zip code, which includes Lake View Terrace as well. FYI- Bernard Parks got more votes than the ex-councilmember for the area in 2005 mayor primary.

Well, I stand corrected. Or maybe it's the fact that they didn't trust don-nothing councilman Alarcon, or the Bullshit from Hahn or Villaraigosa ala 2001, or Hertzberg who had no position on the Landfill. So it turned into eliminating the obvious led to Parks. But If I'm not mistaken, correct me if I'm wrong, in the Run-off this one of the only areas that Hahn won hands down at least that's what the Times graphic showed.

Re: "You should have called her by what ever she name she wanted ... This is an NC power trip." The NC DID call her by her self-appointed title Evangelist -- this lunatic has sued STAKEHOLDERS for not calling her that. She never told us that this was something that Her Lordship required. Check your facts -- this is a Maggie Campbell power trip.
