Fun stuff that came to our in box today involves two of the more comical local politicians in Los Angeles.First off, Cindy M. from Blogging LA reports that our old friend, "Hurricane" Jackie Goldberg was somewhat confused as to how young people commmunicate these days. During a speech at her alma matter, UC Berkeley, Hurricane told the students:
"They're worried about your generation, because you get your news from Comedy Central. And you blog, whatever that means."C'mon Jackie - its not 1967 anymore where you all got high off the fumes from the AB Dick (hmmm, interesting choice of a name considering) machine in the student union. Its all about communication. I wonder if she even knows that the successor to her LA City Council seat, Eric Garcetti has a blog?
From the ridiculous to the sublime, giving former traffic cop turned Councilman Dennis Zine a run for his money is his neighbor to the north, Councilman Greig Smith (where does he get the "i" in Greg anyway?). He flips, he flops, and amazingly, he flips again.After supporting a new Wal-Mart in his district, apparently the other half of LA's version of "Starsky and Hutch" is now opposing the store. I'm not sure if the anti-WalMart folks ponied up a greater alleged slush fund than the alleged slush fund Wal-Mart gave up, but you never know.
Anyone know what Tom LaBonge is up to these days? It used to be he was the main source of humor around town, but not anymore. Way to go Hurricane and Gre(i)g.

Our office deals with both all the time. I'd give a slight edge on brains to Zine, and he has way more personality.

Jackie's people communicated with the parents and constituents 10 times better when she was on school board, than Huizar.
He's unknown, and paying for it now (or actually, his building contractor contributors are "paying" for it).
Ya know, if you read Smiths press release you would never know the community raised holy hell, and finally got him to back down.
He Flips, he Flops oh wait a second... does this mean the neighborhood council people who got into the war with Smith were... cough... right????
No wonder he is now trying to act like this was all his idea.
I got that press release to where Smith takes the credit over his sudden desire to have an EIR as if no skirmish ever took place.
FORTUNATELY we have Mayor Sam to keep the historical record straight. This was a huge reversal of Smith who told everyone that this project was a done deal and the community supported the project. (he even shouted it at the last NC meeting on the issue I attended)
I have to believe the win here goes to Jim Alger and his Neighborhood Council. They really pinned Smith down on this one, and forced him to come around or face the consequences.
Zines Z pin is beyond rediculous.
As for Smith... Jesus H. Christ can this guy fuck a monkey or what?
First he opposes Wal Mart. Then he supports it in exchange or loot. Alger and Company then open up a small can of whoop ass. Smith then threatens to sue Alger and company so they promply go to the cubbard and aquire a larger can of whoop ass. Now Smith suddenly opposes the Wal Mart based on what he should have known right from the start.
I swear I think Smith is dummer than dirt. I'd love to give Alger the credit here but with this Smith moron at the helm it is just to easy.
With antics like this Smith makes Ed Reyes look like a NASA engineer.

Smith is PISSED at you guys! I mean FUMING!!!
Apparently he doesn't like the idea that someone utilizes their 1st ammendment rights to dissent, comment on or utter anything he doesn't approve of.
Perhaps he should keep his staff in check and maybe he wouldn't get in so much trouble.
As for his flip flopping, when will Smith understand that you can't tell a community in a packed room that they are wasting their time and then wonder why they scream at you.
This guy needs to start working WITH the community and the NC's and quit taking credit for every one elses work. From what I can see, that is what got him in trouble this time.
Whoever wrote that stupid press release should be fired.

My vote goes to Zine as the biggest idiot. The rank and file use to support him but after he flip flopped on the city tax measure to get more cops and voted no he lost their support.
Yup, I agree with poster on the mayor endorsement. Zine was at an event with Antonio saying "this is the man." When Antonio left and Hahn showed up Zine was with Hahn giving a thumbs up. Who could trust this guy?
If Smith continues to follow Mitch then he is a complete moron.
Mitch should be fired, as should half Smith's staff but he is too much of a bafoon to figure it out.

Smith is trying to give the impression he always opposed something that he didn't. He puts his finger in the air and takes his next move. He tried to sneak this one past but the neighborhood council caught him and publicly called his sorry ass out.
More councils should do that. Maybe then we would get something done. Of course Smith will keep on going ignoring his constituents until they get smart enough to send his good for nothing ass packing.

There is no way Cooley can get the blogs records. No crime has been committed.
Cooley has more important things to deal with, like prosecuting gang bangers and pedophile priests.
He doesn't need to be the lapboy for a thin skinned politician. Everything Mayor Sam has said is documented and comes from other sources.
Think of what the Daily News did to him when he threatened to sue Alger. It would be bigger going after the blog. He would be skewered not only by the press, but by every blog out there.
If Mayor Sam thought CNN gave him press, this would be a tsunami.

You rise a good point. The Daily News ripped Smithyboy for days when he pulled that stupid stunt, but it would be just like him.
He and his staff constantly threaten people who disagree with him with various forms of intimidation.
It's an abuse of power but what do you expect from a wanna-be cop?
I am not sure what concerns me more.
1) The fact that Greg Smith can't spell his name.
2) The fact that he went to war with a Neighborhood Council.
3) The fact that he lost that war.
4) The fact that he threatened to sue constituents
5) The fact that he lost that fight too and then got handed his ass by the media.
It is very difficult to accept that the good folks of Council District 12 voted for this dumbass in the first place. He certainly is no PR genius.

My favorite Smith/Zine story is the one where they were on "fake cop" patrol and they went to Galpin Ford and.. I'll be damned if they didn't find a break-in in progress. You all know how much money car dealers keep around?
So they beat the guy up. The best part of the story? They just happened to have the President of the Police Commission who also works at Galpin AND they just happened to have Mitch Englander with them who just happened to have a camera! What a campaign consultant....oops, I mean Chief of Staff.
This happened in the middle of the night. I always wondered who those posters were who were up at 3 AM. I guess we know now. Greeeg, Dennis, Mitch and their friends and family.

If so, that explains why so many people talk so much shit about Mitch and Greig behind their backs on the 4th floor. Everyone knows he is a big baby who throws temper tantrums. Actually the both are and they feed off of each other... kind of sad.
As a resident of Northridge I can say that if Smith would have listened to his constituents in the first place he would have never had to back down. But his staff hates or fears Alger so much that it blinded them.
I was not a supporter of Jim Alger until Wal Mart.
Jim Alger demanded an EIR from the git go, but Smiths' office resisted. He demanded Smith publicly oppose the Wal Mart but Smith never did. Instead Smith threatened Alger with a lawsuit to which Alger called his bluff and of course, no suit. When the people of Northridge needed someone to fight for them, Jim Alger was there. Grieg Smith was nowhere to be found.
Now Alger will end up the winner with the community, and rightfully so. as there is no way that Smith could ever say he opposed the Wal Mart given the letter that he sent out, his repeated "done deal" statements to anyone who called the office, and Phyllis Wingers' statement "The councilman supports this project under the following conditions".
Alger definately helps us here in Northridge, too bad he is running for Assembly. Mr Smith, you could lear a thing or to from people like Jim Alger.
