Wireless Dreaming

Mayor Poopy's latest hail mary pass is to offer wi-fi internet access to every resident in the city. Of course, a special commission has been set up to study it.

Several other cities across Southern California and the US have already implemented such systems. Click here and here and here and here and here to see why this isn't going to happen in Los Angeles.

By the way, what the hell is wi-fi?

Remember that Poopee is not talking about FREE wi-fi but probably something where you pay $10-15 a month on your LAMS bill.

This is a great opportunity for Poop:
1) He can say he did something for the residents
2) He can hire a bunch of counsultants to drag out the process
3) He can give a sweetheart bid on the deal to his favorite telecom company to run the system
4) The city can charge even more taxes and fees on the bill

C'mon, let's have a serious conversation here. Wi-fi is wireless fidelity, which has great successes in getting the creative class to locate in cities and to keep high paying jobs in given areas and bring about neighborhood revitalization. The first effort in the city is free access at the Van Nuys City Hall.

We should do what Philadelphia is doing and push this effort to be free access--they set up Wireless Philadelphia (http://www.phila.gov/wireless/faqs.html). The question is not whether Mayor Hahn can make this happen, the question is whether or not Thera Bradshaw is enough of a visionary to pull this kind of thing off.

The mayor might not be the first person to think of it, but if any of you stone-throwers (on all sides) give a hoot about making the city better, forums like this (that are on the INTERNET after all), should get behind the effort and help make it happen.

You have to cut Mayor Sam some slack. He died six years ago so he is surely not up to speed on the latest techno-gadgets I would surmise.

That being said, I agree Mayor Sam and all the other blogs and websites out there should get behind FREE wi-fi for the whole city.

I am surprised Hertzberg isn't out on front on this.
