The race is on!

The company that runs the LA Marathon has sold the event to a Chicago based company.

A report in today's LA Times states that Bill Burke - husband of LA County Supervisor Yvonne Braithwaite Burke - and his business partner - stand to make $15 million in cash and stock on the deal.

At issue is $370,000 in city service waivers the marathon receives. Now that Burke's company is flush with cash, some Council members feel these waivers should end. As well, the company taking over the marathon runs several other marathons nationally. As a professional concern, do they need this corporate welfare when Councilwoman Greuel is looking under the sofa cushions to find spare change for police?
"There were five different marathons before Marie and I came along, and everybody else went broke," Burke said. "I took the risk. I put in 20 years, and I've earned mine."
-Bill Burke
Of course, its likely nothing will happen. In addition to being Supervisor Burke's husband, Bill is well connected and well heeled having made thousands in donations to local campaigns.

FROM: CITYWATCHER

This crap has got to stop or city council members should lose their seats. We're desperately looking for money and corporations like this get a handout thanks to our tax dollars. No more.....LAPD and DOT have to work these events. Why should a company from outside the city come in and make $$$$ at our expense then leave with the profits. HELLL NOOOOOO

He donated the most to Bernie. Would love to see the motions pertaining to this and how they were voted. When did they decide to sell our CITY LOGO to these idiots? Don't we the taxpayers hae anything to say about it?

It's hard to believe that the city isn't making $$$$$ from all the millions they stand to gain.
