Open Thread for Wednesday
Pix from the LA Times
Here are a few topics of interest to get you started:
Despite the best efforts of Steve Lopez, Mayor V still refuses to debate anyone before the March 3rd election!
Those pesky supergraphic building wrap ads just keep popping up! The City has imposed a fine of $2500 per month for those is violation but when the rental rate for displaying the ads can reach $100,000 per month, $2500 is a bargain trade-off!
While everyone is up in arms about Measure B, the DWP has quietly made a tentative deal to purchase 100MW of geothermal power from Mexico's Cerro Prieto geothermal generating station. In addition, Sempra Energy is on track to purchase 250MW of power from the La Rumorosa wind power project being constructed in this near-border town east of Tijuana. Now if those silly drug lords would just stop killing everybody.
There you go, the rest of this thread is up to you...behave yourself companeros!

Wacko Moore, the only candidate who is serious about running....and running....and running....and running, with no political party willing to back him. Ha! Extremist Wacko Moore that blew through his campaign funds. The GOP refused to associate with Wacko. The press treats him like a kook. Phil had no problem getting the GOP for his campaign. Zuma Dogg has no problem getting press. But Wacko is serious about running, running, running that he's been running at 2 percent visibility for ten years.

Stay tuned. Listen to what a real leader sounds like.

Geez, Mayor V. IS scum.
But then, people have been saying that all along, including the "infamous" Jimmy Hahn, and most of the long term "community organizers" in the council district he failed to represent in any real way, right before he ran again for mayor.
Gotta wonder why Mayor Sam/Higby heartily endorsed Antonio just 4 short years ago.
It's not like this leopard has changed his spots in any way since coming back to L.A.
Kinda makes you think you should always vote AGAINST who(m)ever this blog officially endorses. . . ALWAYS!

Wacko Walter is serious, all right. Serious as a heart attack. Overreact, turn out the "corrupt" career politicians, and put in a gadfly (yes, that's what this blog called him for a LONG time, right next to Hal Netkin), and an amateur with strange, useless ideas.
Smacks of the Jimmy Carter days of "malaise" all over again.
Smile, Wacko, and know that every new vote you corral is someone who's just not quite right, in the head.

Yea, great idea. Lopez can be a vote-tally telemarketer for you. You gotta be a supporter of Wacko. His wingnut ideas are as impractical as yours.

The office of Mayor of Los Angeles is non-partisan, so Walter does not need and should not have a political party endorsing him.
His issues are reasonable enough and he is a respected member of the Bar.
What is Salty Dog? He is a lazy gadfly, who delights in offending everyone he can and is surprised that they hate him.
Well, I am not voting for Walter, I am voting for Mayor Villaraigosa. I am also hoping that The Mayor decides to run for Governor, as I don't see a candidate I would like to have for Governor, among, Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsome, John Garamendi, Steve Westley or Bill Lockyer.
But, Walter is a legitimate candidate for Mayor, which is more than I can say for the buffoon that seems to dominate the pages here, mostly with negative comments, I might add.

Council just approved $12 million to settle the May Day Melee protests. If this is the end of it, it's actually a bargain compared to what the dumb downtown juries have been awarding.
No wonder LA has a national rep as having among the most "generous" juries. Besides, if we sent Rocky or his high-priced outside counsel to fight this further it would have quickly run up legal fees alone that made this amount seem downright a pittance. Sad but true. Really a shame that some agitators throwing water bottles and refusing to listen to the cops created this mess and embarrassment -- why don't they ban such bottles, especially frozen ones, anywhere near such demonstrations in future? Like they do at Dodger games to prevent players from possible injury. Include large wooden signs like the one that injured a cop in Westwood recently, during the pro- Gaza demonstrations or whatever side was protesting exactly. No one has a "right" to bring possibly dangerous materials into a volatile crowd that's there for the sole purpose of protesting.

I hope 11:38 aka Don Quackers doesn't mean to imply that anyone who votes for the midget, cholo, Mexican puppet (hah! lil puppet) Antonio Villar is the opposite of "just not quite right in the head".. Whenever I hear Walter speaking about his campaign all I ever him him do is whine about how, "Villaraigosa won't debate me! Villaraigosa won't debate me!"
Or how, "He only works 11$ of the time." Common. Do you really think you are going to become the next mayor on a platform of the mayor won't debate you and he only works 11% of the time.
Give it a rest and move on to some of the issues people really pull the lever for.
Do you know what those issues are?
And I wonder what Mr. Moore's position is on Clear Channel digital billboards?
I understand his career profession has been defending and pushing for these billboards as on of their attorneys.
Does Mr. Moore admit that he is a carrer attorney for the billboard companies and what else can he say besides, "Villaraigosa won't debate me.?"

Green idea guarantees L.A. red ink
By Doug McIntyre
Updated: 02/03/2009 08:38:36 PM PST
There's an old political clich that patriotism and religion are the last refuge of scoundrels. It's time to add "green" to that list.
Our friendly neighborhood political machine has identified the soft underbelly of the Los Angeles electorate and every cash-grab ballot measure is now marketed in an attractive green package.
The same political machine that cooked up Measure R to undo term limits for City Council members, the same political machine that ran a bait-and- switch swindle with the cynical phony phone-tax "cut" are back for more with Measure B, the so-called "Solar Energy/ Green Jobs Initiative." With billions of Department of Water and Power dollars pouring into the hands of the mayor, City Council, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and, ultimately, the Chinese manufacturers of solar panels, Measure B has the potential to be the largest local taxpayer shakedown ever.
The scheme is simple. Who could possibly be opposed to solar energy in Southern California? When it's 114 degrees in the Valley, it would be nice to get something other than melanoma. So what's wrong with Measure B?
For starters, money.
Nobody, and I mean nobody - not the mayor and not the Department of Water & Power, nobody - knows how much Measure B will cost. We do know an enormous effort has been made to keep facts away from the voting public. There's something deliciously ironic about the DWP keeping us in the dark.
Unfortunately, irony is a luxury we can no longer afford.
Objective analysts who have looked at what passes for the plan universally agree Measure B is incalculably expensive and of dubious utility. Even biased analysts smell a big, expensive rat.
Measure B has been cloaked in secrecy and stonewalling. We're being asked to vote for it blind. Even the most dedicated environmentalist asks the dealer how much for the Prius before signing on the dotted line. But we're told Measure B is good for us, and we're being told it's good for us by the special-interest groups who will directly benefit from the enormous expenditure of DWP ratepayer money required to generate 400 megawatts of solar power.
As of this writing, New York is $4 billion in the hole. When Wall Street tanked, it took the Big Apple's tax base with it and now New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says they'll have to say goodbye to 23,000 city workers. Additionally, New York City is going to require its employees to pony up more for health insurance - this on top of $900 million in new taxes.
It's a bitter pill to swallow, acknowledges Mayor Mike, but the numbers don't lie. Too bad for him he isn't mayor of Los Angeles where everything's a lie.
While New York struggles with ugly truths, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa shakes his pompoms for a pretty green lie. Instead of leading an honest discussion of our fiscal plight and the tough choices we face, Tony V exploits our desire for green technology by passing off Measure B as good public policy even though an independent audit called it "extremely risky."
The early cost projection of $1.5billion has been dismissed as a hallucination. The true costs could be something approaching $4 billion.
Bloomberg is facing a $4 billion deficit by dealing the cards face- up, while Tony V encourages L.A. to go on a $4 billion shopping spree. Measure B's supporters act as if greenbacks come from the sun.
At a time when teachers are being fired, anti-gang programs cut, sidewalks and streets left unpaved, library hours cut and every other basic function of modern civic life hard-pressed, the so-called leaders of this city want us to fork over uncountable billions for a pipe dream.
Burdening DWP customers with an enormous rate hike for a boondoggle would be awful under perfect economic conditions. To go forward with Measure B in today's economy is recklessly irresponsible. Measure B is a green initiative guaranteed to produce red ink.

It's hardest for those of us who don't have a lot of money. I'm pretty tired of the Walter Moore supporters making fun of ZD for being poor when a lot of us others are poor.
The most important issue in this campaign is that ZD cares and ZD knows how to advocate for the voters. Walter Moore hasn't done anything for us. His vanity pushes him to run for office. Walter Moore is vain and clueless.

Notice no one says anything of substance for the incumbent who's been on a mission to "generate revenue," as he so instructed the City Council who are so accomodating to the tune of being "rubber stamps" with Janice and Wendy fighting for that role after Eric has his spot at the top of the totem pole.
Nearly all these posts are "against" somebody, but not hitting the real message that WHOEVER should get the vote on March 3rd needs to be ANYONE OTHER THAN the Mayor.
Create the run-off situation by keeping 50% plus 1 vote for OTHER candidates and then see who keeps support for the run-off election.
The TONY supporters know this and keep the distraction going by challengers spending time criticizing each other. The more THAT happens, the LESS TIME Antonio's dirty laundry gets to see the light of day in front of those uninformed and deceived voters who think he's worth anything.
Give THOSE voters the real story and enough will bail on him to make a diffence- his hard-core supporters have a stake in the action, so it's wasted time to persuade THEM. Get those who rely on TV News and have no idea of how lousy TONY is.
Remind them when they see parking meters that run to 8pm on $1 per hour and see the trash fees instantly tripled, it's TONY'S doing. There's so much more of all this that would sway the vote and TONY may be crap for a Mayor, but he knows he can manipulate people's PERCEPTION of him- and he'll settle for that if it gets him the vote.
I don't doubt that lots of bloggers really are designing their approach to HELP re-elect TONY.
We can't have that and we don't have to have that in this low-turnout election. Where's all those Obama youth that wanted change? Here's a good place for it.
In CD-14
AND Wendy and Jack don't deserve to be anywhere near another city office. They'd wind up in TONY's most of the time anyway.

Somewhat out-of-control Republican Walter Moore is running for Mayor of Los Angeles, and he's looking for $150,000 so he can get into the debates. First example of something not quite being right: he can't even put up a website at the short form of his domain (MooreIsBetter.com); instead, it redirects to the previous MegaLink. During an answer session, I said how I don't like how Walter rips the Mayor for having failed the bar exam 4 times. I told the crowd it didn't matter and didn't stop Villaraigosa from becoming Mayor. Walter objected to my comments.
On the way home I heard that schmuck Kevin James on the radio bashing Antonio Villaraigosa (again and again!!) for being a four time bar failing loser.
