Robberies or hate crimes in Silver Lake?
My neighbor just called me to tell me what her neighbor told her - a link from another neighbor, from LA Metblogs:
I guess this is how you find out about crimes in LA now - by word of mouth, as the LAPD just suggested to me, or through a phone tree. That's the modern way, is it? This may be because the LAPD DOES NOT HAVE any kind of blog or announcement page about crimes. This is definitely a wave of crimes: 10 scary robberies within 2 weeks is a wave! Maybe they were waiting for a tsunami or something, to actually make this public. They have this site here, http://lapdcrimemaps.org/, but it only records crimes for 7 days, and doesn't seem to have these robberies on it.
I talked with the Northeast Watch Commander, Sargent Milewski about this just now. She was very pleasant and forthcoming, and said there was supposed to be a press conference about this string of crimes tonight, but she wasn't sure when. So you guys got me, instead.
If you know this area at all, I would consider Rowena EXTREMELY safe, and I walk on it nearly every night. And it's only maybe one long block between these 2 restaurants, quite well lit, with foot and street traffic.

Hispanic males. Sometimes just a cell phone is taken, sometimes a wallet, and they happen from evening to early morning - last one was 3:35 last night. (I was there at 3 AM.)
All attacks have been on single males. At this point, the Sargent said that after thorough investigations, they are sure they aren't hate crimes, but robberies. Well, I don't think so (said in a sing-songy voice.) They sound like attacks on gays to me, when they don't always rob. (Could have been helpful if the writer to Metblogs mentioned if that man was gay.)
In any case, I hope they get these creeps very very soon. You can believe that I will be on the alert, myself, now that I finally know about this. Get out of my 'hood.
This past Friday January 30, a friend of mine was brutally assaulted walking from Blair’s near Hyperion to Edendale Bar and Grill on Rowena. It was maybe between 11:30 PM or 12:30 AM near the West Silver Lake Street entrance on Rowena. He was pulled into the back of a dark driveway, had a gun pressed against his temple and then savagely thrown to the ground and beaten, crushing his left cheek; he blacked out and doesn’t remember what happened next. He couldn’t see both suspects but got a look at one who he describes as a tall, young Hispanic male.

Donna this is an irresponsbile way to cause hysteria without knowing the facts. There was a huge press conference on each tv station yesterday alerting people. Usually with hate crimes there is no taking of property and in these cases they DID take from the victims. So stop the hysteria, it's happened in other areas before and they found the suspects. If people like you would have a neighborhood watch or meeting to let your neighbors know and do something more proactive instead of whining and compaining you would help more.

Silver Lake Robberies 'Opportunistic'LOS ANGELES

Police say a series of robberies in the Silver Lake area were "opportunistic," probably committed by people "looking to make a quick buck," and not hate crimes.
Los Angeles Police Capt. Lance Smith said the robberies involved two to four men holding up a lone male as he walked. A number of Silver Lake residents believed the holdups were hate crimes, Smith said.
"There were reports in the Silver Lake community that some of the victims were victims of hate crimes and targeted because of their sexual orientation," Smith said.
"But a review of the information received from the victims" do not indicate this, he said.

7:18, I'm the one that did the research and called the police directly. And not ALL the victims had something stolen (like the one in the article in Metblogs, dummy) and sometimes it was just one thing - a cell phone and left the money! Duh, they are trying to evade a hate crime rap, which is a much more serious offense. And the LAPD doesn't want that label either! So obvious.

Are you nuts? That stretch of Rowena is far from safe. First of all, it is notoriously NOT well lit - esp. by Islands and Blair's - with jay walkers getting hit and run over (and sadly killed) many times. Ironically, the Silverlake Neighborhood Council has their office RIGHT THERE, but, of course, they have been silent during this whole crime spree AND have been asleep about the many accidents there, choosing to concentrate instead on getting a cro$$walk for Trader Joe's around the corner.
As for "EXTREMELY SAFE", well, clearly, the street is NOT! D'oh.
LA crime will no doubt soon look like crime in Tijuana.
RE: the 10 robberies in Silverlake. I have been told that their are squatters living in the closed down mental halfway house on Rowena. I wonder if anyone in a position of authority knows this?

...The word on the street tonight in Silver Lake is that the recent string of attacks is gang-related and could be the work of the Crazies gang, an Echo Park gang that could be doing gang initiations. As part of the initiation, the gang is attacking individuals, all single males, walking around Silver Lake and Echo Park. This is what some members of the LAPD are guessing at this point, according to one person who spoke to the LAPD tonight, but the information is not confirmed. A community meeting is scheduled for Thursday at Ivanhoe Elementary School. Meanwhile, Fox News did a story tonight story about the attacks. UPDATE: The Thursday meeting is from 6pm-8pm. And here's the release from City Councilmember Tom LaBonge's office. UPDATE: Eastsider LA talks to the lead detective in the case.
To all you lame and ignorant transplants this is very important. Echo Park, Silver Lake, and the surrounding areas are rich with a long history of gang violence. All you transplants moved there because of the gentrification, the hip scene, and affordable prices. This history of poverty and gangs will not disappear over night. Because you "CHOSE" to live here and take over, it is YOUR responsibility to become proactive in the bleeping community. The police aren't the answer because they can only do so much. Figure out ways to give back to the place you live. If you want it to be safer now and in the future you must get involve in helping the troubled youth in the area. YOU transplants forget what being a part of a community is about. You walk around like you own the place and treat the original inhabitants as if they are invisible. SURPRISE SURPRISE! They see you and your wealth. If you don't care to get involved then move to the suburbs or to Beverly Hills! The gangs were here way before you. Change will only come if you help change it.
