Jasmyne Cannick on Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Missing Councilmembers
Blogger Jasmyne Cannick covers yet another Jack Weiss campaign event Mayor Villaraigosa press conference detailing a plan to place more LAPD resources in Council Districts 8,9 and 10 to fight the gang problem.
Curiously, the Council Members from those districts are nowhere to be found and the Mayor states he has no idea where they're at, though he has Fifth District and City Attorney Candidate Jack Weiss standing at his side during the entirephoto op press conference.
Jasmyne does an excellent job of uncovering a number of subtle yet conflicting statements made by both the Mayor and LAPD Chief William Bratton during the speechifying and question-answer period.

If Riordan and Hahn or Hahn and Rocky had pulled a stunt like this, the shunned council members, who also never met a camera they didn't like, would tear the Mayor apart.
Let's see if their realization that this was all about the Mayor and Weiss, and that if they were there they wouldn't have attracted any media attention, can subdue their thrist for publicity.

This Mayor has to go. I'm voting for Zuma Dogg.

Does it take that many police officers and politicos for a single press conference. Did anyone there carpool? It’s obvious why Angelenos are paying $10 million a year in gas and car repairs.

Is Don Quixote running for mayor?
Don Q knows everything, and especially knows about the oppressed mexicans in the eastside. The gavachos are oppresing the mexicans in east los angeles, we need mexican representation in the eastside.
Let's all write in Don Q for mayor and ensure we all have menudo in our pots. With Don Q as mayor, we won't have the gavachos ruining the ambiance in east los angeles, taco trucks and bacon wrapped hot dogs will be available on every corner 24/7.
Read all about the white hipsters taking over east los angeles, Don Q is sounding the alarm, beware of robber baron gavachos in east los angeles.

el chavo,
I don't undertand your comment but it seems at first glance to be off-topic racist unless you care to explain why it's relevant to this discussion of Jasmyne Cannick's article discussed here.

9;54 - VERY FUNNY!!
Zuma Dogg is a bigger camera mugger/media whore than all the current city hallers put together. Did you see him this past week with the Minnie Mouse ears?
Just what we need in city hall!!

Does anybody ever think about or talk about the cost of ALL of the man hours of all the city personel at one of theses newsconferences?
Irresponsible of all of those in attendance. Especially the Chief, Mayor and Councilmembers if they are mandating staff to be there.
Thousands of dollars wasted.

The Devil's in the details, folks. Note the wording: "...fighting the gang problem."as opposed to: "...fighting the gangs." See how we condradict ourselves? Also, more importantly, Chief Bratton had the AUDACITY to say: "...there's 400+ gangs here in Los Angeles-- nothing's gonna change that. They're here to stay..." WHY? WHY WON'T HE DISMEMBER, DISEMBOWEL AND DESTROY THE GANGS? That weak, wimpy, pizza-faced sell-out of a chief refuses to betray that disgusting gangbanger mayor we're saddled with until March 3rd. And look at STUPID Jack Weiss trying to look all concerned and somber and serious-- as if he really gives a flying f--- about anything other than his political career! If he did, he would've sponsored JAMIEL'S LAW, since he heads that sham of a Safety Committee. And as for the Missing Mexicans-- we KNOW Huizar loves the gangs so he's a no-show, Cardenas is busy w/ his elephant (which I do applaud him for by the way, but he STILL should have been at this press conference)and that brain-dead Reyes is busy ordering tacos wrapped in bacon from an illegal street vendor. Good work, Ms. Cannick. Your video clip is so telling!! I believe I heard you a couple years ago being interviewed on KFI. Am I right?

funny as hell...jasmyne writes:
I asked the Mayor who then looked at the clock, asked what day it was, remembered that there was no council meeting, and then tried to unsuccessfully explain that all of the city council members were on board with his plan and that they were probably in their districts attending to important work.
he asked what day it was?????

11:29, uh, Cannick wasn't worried about "the missing Mexicans" at all. Read her blog and the comments before you shoot off your mouth. And like the Chief can just eradicate all the gangs in the city, when he's struggling to put more cops on the streets. While everyone's screaming for more ocps but some like Mr. Parks want to cut their funding. I guess when Bratton says everyone's behind this, he means they all want more cops and to fight gangs, but is too polite to tell the whole story.
All you Bratton- bashers, be careful what you wish for, if he's gone and replaced you'll appreciate what we had. You think there's a reason the rest of the world is seeking his advice and trying to lure him away? Including Scotland Yard?
As for that red herring about Jamiel's Law, again -- that Shaw killer was NOT released out of city but COUNTY jail, which is under Sheriff Baca and the D A Cooley's jurisdiction, they're the ones who never verified his legal status or anything about him before releasing him, even though he had a long rap sheet for violent offenses. Since then Baca got permission from the Supervisors to run checks on inmates before they were just about to be released so there would be more time for ID results to come back. Gee, what a brilliant idea. So like Bratton keeps saying you geniuses aren't even in the right jurisdiction.
Even if you were, the way Walter Moore's written Jamiel's Law would require the cops to ask anyone who looks vaguely like they MIGHT be an illegal gangmember, read Latino- looking, to show proof of ID. Racial-profiling bonanza for ACLU-type lawyers, here it comes.
To avoid that, cops would have to ask EVERYONE at random to show proof of birth and citizenship. Like in Nazi Germany or N. Korea. Jamiel Shaw Sr. is quoted saying that would be fine withi him, but NOT with me, thank you. I'm not having some ignoramuses role back my rights and privacy protections we fought decades, centuries, to achieve in this country. He's a nice man and I feel sorry for them as for all families of victims, but having the naively ignorant, and some self-promoting lawyer like Moore using it as a personal campaign issue, is NOT the answer.
NO ONE in law enforcement or the legal profession, even on the right like Larry Elder, besides Moore himself, supports this. Larry Elder is on record opposing Jamiel's Law for these reasons.

Angelenos need an independent Chief similar to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. And CA legislators along with the Governor to enact a tough immigration law, penalizing companies that knowingly employ illegal workers.
