Jamiel's Law Gets Support of the Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council

Disclosure: I am a member of the Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council Board of Directors.

Wednesday evening Jamiel and Anita Shaw spoke before the Board of Directors of the Mid-Town North Hollywood Neighborhood Council, re-telling the tragic murder of their 17 year old son Jamiel and their efforts to pass Jamiel's Law, which will provide one tool against ending gang violence.

The Board passed unanimously passed a resolution is support of Jamiel's Law when it comes to the ballot as well as called on the City Council to move a similar measure sponsored by Council Member Dennis Zine out of Jack Weiss' Public Safety Committee so it may proceed to a full vote by the Council.

Jamiel and Anita Shaw speak to the Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council

At the same meeting, the Council also approved a resolution I authored offering our support for the Los Angeles City Council's position in opposition to Proposition 8, a measure on the November California ballot that would overturn a recent court decision allowing same-sex couples to marry legally.

A previous decision by DONE and the City Attorney has ruled that Neighborhood Councils may not take positions on state or federal legislation however we determined that our Board could take a position supporting the City Council's position.

10:23, the only real consequence of Jamiel claiming Bloods is that it prevents prosecutors from charging Espinosa with a hate crime.

It doesn't mean he won't be convicted of first-degree murder-- only that it was a gang crime, not a hate crime.

Unfortunately, the Shaws, Walter Moore and people on this very blog screwed Jamiel's Law by denying reality.

To be clear, the fact Jamiel was claiming Bloods doesn't make the need for Jamiel's Law any less critical or urgent, but Shaw, Moore and others killed all credibility by making what should have been a legal technicality the main focus.

The specious claim that Jamiel, Jr. was a blood is based on very flimsy, non-existent evidence.

Inside information I've been exposed to; there is a combination of a deputy DA who didn't quite do their job and political pressure to downplay the hate crime nature of Jamiel's death.

By the way the dum dums on the blog before were claiming Jas was a crip, so at some point they need to get their story straight.

10:23, that's the suppostion that many opponents use to support protection of illegal alien gangbangers from deportation.

In any event, murder, so far, is still against the law. Action to reduce unnecessary exposure to this source of lethal threats to the population, including other minority and illegal aliens, should be taken. It is a narrow band of persons being affected, but again, they pose an unaceptable and real danger, as does gang activity overall. The difference here is that deportation of these individuals who spread crime is a remedy that is available. The other criminals may be as bad or worse, but you can't deport citizens.

Higby, I would guess, is not in denial, as the comment states, but instead, it's your position that goes the other way to accept the speculation. It's something like the situations where people say, "Did you know Obama's not a U.S.citizen?" or "Obama is a Muslim." Hear it enough times, and if you have nothing else, like maybe, facts, you may just decide to accept it.

A lot of posters relish in adding comments loaded with negativism and ridicule without making much effort to do anything in the way of working towards solutions or improvement, and this thread, in only a couple of posts, demonstrates that.

No one is saying Jamiel was a hard core gangbanger.
Let me phrase it this way: Do you people really believe Espinosa killed Jamiel because of his skin color?

YES.

All he saw was a "BMW", Black Male Walking.

You wish Jamiel Jr. was in a gang.

Espinosa was released from jail because this city is a sanctuary city. He IS a DOCUMENTED gang member. What about that?

If this were not a sanctuary city he would of been deported. You call Jamiel a gang member to TRY and take the focus off illegal aliens and the people who protect illegal alien gangs.

It's not going to work!

10:23 AM

Do you "understand", that you could be wrong?

What if he was killed because he was black?

10:41 The facts: Pedro claims 18th street gangbanger. Jamiel was claiming football at High School. Hate crime may be added. The DA was thrown off the case for calling the victim was in a gang. You are an illegal alien from another country or an illegal alien born in the USA. Anchor babies are illegal aliens born in the USA.

illegal means illegal : 0

Michael are you saying the Myspace web page and the LA Weekly article are flimsy evidence?

1:08 is typical of the Walter Moore angry mob. Sure, go to City Hall and make the case that "anchor babies" are illegal aliens. Be my guest.

This, folks, is how scumbags like Villaraigosa and Bratton hold on to power.

Are you telling me that Pedro Espinosa was not a gangbanger? Are you?

All illegal aliens are huring this country, however, Jamiel's Law only focuses on illegal alien gangbangers.

Jamiel's Law will deport gang members that are here illegally.

Pick your side, Pedro Espinoza or Jamiel Shaw, II.

The line is drawn!

LA Weekly thought their story would STOP the Jamiel's Law momentum! Did it work?

Thank you Midtown North Hollywood Neighborhood Council for supporting Jamiel's Law!

Hopefully other Neighborhood Councils will support Jamiel's Law too.

Jamiel Shaw Jr. did not deserve to be gunned down three doors from his house. Anyone who say otherwise should be ashamed!

Good for the Neighborhood Council.

The DA was fired. That should be enough to tell you. Don't listen to what that wretched gang apologist Celeste Fremon says. Did she work for Janice Hahn?

I've seen Lindsay Lohan flash gang signs. Does that make her a gangbanger too?

The people who keep spreading this lie really need to find more constructive ways to spend their time.

The Shaw's, and other family's like them, deserve better
