Burgers & Bullets: Glad it's Gone from L.A.

L.A. Downtown News would never say it, but the Downtown area is still a true American wasteland, and will remain so for a long time to come. You can build all of the dense Mediterranean apartment complexes you want; the blight remains substantial.

Don't listen to the cheerleaders.

Bringing us to this photo. Does anyone remember what blight used to be at this corner? DON'T CHEAT BY LOOKING AT THE STREET SIGN!

Think Homies & Hot Dogs. Think Bullets & Burgers.

Does anyone have a good story about this torn down eatery?

I drive through this intersection nearly every day, but never stopped in. The place wasn't even veg-considerate let alone veg-friendly.

If you're talking about the old BBQ King, I ate there all the time and I really miss it. When I found out that the Orsini people bought up their land and everything around it, the owner told me that they were trying to find a new spot further west on Sunset. Don't know if they were able to do that.

Their story is an interesting one. The owner, whose name I forgot, used to work in Richard Riordan's law firm in a low-level position. He learned how to BBQ, and would make grub for the firm's special events.

He got so good at it that he wanted to have his own business. Riordan, an capital venture expert, lent him the money to buy up the old Texaco station at the corner of Cesar Chavez (Sunset) and Fig, and turn it into one of the finest BBQ places I've ever patronized.

As Mayor, Riordan would regularly have them cater lunches for him in City Hall.

I need to track him down.

I hope Obama says something about the Naylin Paylin XXX video during the debate tonight. If Obama mention the Naylin Palin tape tonight I will be voting for Obama.

Hello 3:06pm,

This may come as a surprise to you, but this DOES interest SOME people, and it's an eatery that a lot of people near the city and county government centers used to frequent.

Got that, Turkey? Love, Haikula

1:30, the owner of BBQ King opened up another eatery downtown. The Downtown News did a story on him a few issues ago - perhaps you could email them and find out where his new location is?

Actually, I liked the area before all the Orsini development went up. It feels like a canyon of metal and concrete now all in that area that is now spreading outward towards the long-standing residential areas.

There is not much of horizon views left around the edges of downtown, or any of the less-populated areas, as well, which I preferred. Too many people.

It looks like this trend will continue, regardless of the inabiity to support the increased demands of the traffic, parking, sewers, water, electricity, police and fire services that come with it, all aggravating the existing and overloaded infrastructure.

When I looked at gentrified condos downtown 25 years ago, I thought "downtown is a pit."

When I looked at gentrified condos downtown last summer, I thought "downtown is still a pit."
