Christopher Buckley Voting for Obama!

This is rich in so many ways. Christoper Buckley, son of the late William Buckley (National Review) is not only endorsing Obama, but has resigned from the very conservative paper his father founded in 1955.

From Crooks & Liars:

Christopher Buckley, the author and son of the late conservative mainstay William F. Buckley, said in a telephone interview that he has resigned from the National Review, the political journal his father founded in 1955.

Mr. Buckley said he had “been effectively fatwahed by the conservative movement” after endorsing Barack Obama in a blog posting on TheDailyBeast; since then, he said he has been blanketed with hate mail at the blog and at the National Review, where he has written a column.

Mr. Buckley said he did not understand the sense of betrayal that some of his conservative colleagues felt, but said that the fury and ugly comments his endorsement generated is “part of the calcification of modern discourse. It’s so angry.” Quoting Ronald Reagan, he added, “I haven’t left the Republican Party. It left me.”

I guess it's worth repeating, but this was posted by a reader several days ago on Mayor Sam along with a link to Buckley's article.

This is about as close as CNN can come to declaring the election over. It says that Obama has now pushed over the 270 electoral vote threshhold needed to win.

Everyone is deserting the McCain campaign. I mean everyone!

Now John McCain's brother sent an e-mail blasting the campaign. He said that he sees "a shipwreck ahead."

He too remembers the old John McCain who spoke freely and from his heart to reporters. His solution is to let him do that again. He pleads with the campaign handlers to let McCain be himself again.

Wait! Is John McCain a prisoner? Doesn't he make the ultimate decisions on how the campagin is run?

This is the first time Buckley has ever voted for a democrat!

A true conservative who had enough of an issue with McCain-Palin that they could not bring themselves to vote for them would not vote for Barack Obama.

For example, Antonio Watch, he does not support McCain but is not voting for Obama.

In 2004 I could not vote for Bush but never would vote for a left leaning Democrat like Kerry. Hence, I left that portion of the ballot blank.

Were Buckley actually a conservative he'd do that.

And he's crying about conservatives being mean to him, quite frankly they have every right to question his intellectual dishonesty.

Buckley Family Values:

He is married to Lucy Gregg Buckley with whom he had 2 children. He also fathered a child named Jonathan with former Random House publicist Irina Woelfle. Buckley agreed to pay $3,000 a month in child support but has reportedly declined to have contact with the boy.

Hey, Dickwad-

I know you're big on perfection as you stated on a single sentence where I used the passive voice, so I know you'll take it in the right spirit when I write that this was ALREADY WRITTEN ABOUT on THIS blog!

Wow! The Republicans are turning on each other and eating their young.

First Higby tells us that Republicans like Riordan aren't really Republicans because they will vote for Obama. Now he's turning on a Buckley who has been a regular writer for the conservative bible, the National Review.

Given that the Republicans are already a minority party, how small a group are the "real" Republicans of which Higby speaks?

Who's left?

Joe,

You left the word "is" out of your headline.

It should read "Christopher Buckley IS Voting for Obama."

Thanks for taking the time to point out that I left the word "BE" out of the title of MY previous post.

Undoubtedly, you won't have any problem with my pointing this out, Mr. Grammar Police. (It's not even grammar; it's a typo).

A few days your justified your juvenile name-calling behavior by saying that you react in kind to way people treat you.

But in this thread you referred to Joe B as "Dickwad" without him having written anything about you here.

Is that what you call a preemptive strike that you somehow have invented a way to justify?

Hi 5:35,

Joe took it upon himself to point out a completely irrelevant grammatical error in MY previous post, so you wouldn't know the problem unless you read that.

Since Joe feels this is a good expenditure of your, his and my time, I took it upon myself to point out that foolishness.

If the way that I handled it seems out of step, that's not my concern. You are encouraged to complain to Mr. Higby and see what he says.

Joe, for what it's worth, if you want to let the matter drop now, I will be glad to oblige.

That's because I create original posts and you're writing off of yesterday's NY Times' blog.

According to the link you provided.

No wonder you are focused on my grammar; you love reading what I have to say, and can't figure out what else to write. All was fine until you went down that road.

for a joyride down some pretty offensive roads.

I, for one, have NOT had enough of Haikula. She speaks from the heart. I've noticed that Joe B. tends to speak from ideology.

Unless I miss my guess, look for great things coming from Miss (sorry, Ms.) Haikula. In my opinion, the same cannot be stated about Joe B., who reminds me of a fly-by-night kind of guy.

The above are just my opinions, take it or leave it - both of you.

The only thing we need now is for Haikula to grade every comment like Jack-Hoff was doing before leaving this blog.

Zuma Dogg and Haikula both think this blog is about them not the topic posted.

A simple comment about Haikula's grammar sent her off on a penis envy rage, maybe it's her large tit envy.

Reagan never said that. It's not a quote but a paraphrase.

Reagan said, "I did not leave the DEMOCRATIC party. It left me."

Right, why is it okay for Reagan to leave the Democrat party to go to the Republican party, but it's somehow wrong for Buckley to change from Republican to Democrat? I guess he feels that the Republican party left him.

It's not a question if Buckley or Riordan were rock rib Republicans that suddenly had an epiphany and came under the spell of BHO.

Both were nominal Republicans whose conservatism ended at their pocketbook.

And in Riordan's case he's trying to do business and exist in a world where if you're not Democrat you're not cool.

It's just like the kids who hated cigarettes but tried smoking in college.

And it figures - much of liberalism is smoke and fog anyway.

We've been trying it for 60 years and it's yet to make one change.

(Oh and I am sure some folks will talk about civil rights and women's rights, etc. being the purview of the Democrats. Wrong baby. It was the Republicans who were voting for and supporting the Civil Rights laws when Democrats like KKK Robert Byrd and Algore's Daddy were running around in white sheets and had "No Negroes" signs on their front door)
