Silver Lake Neighborhood Council the latest with "issues"
Neighborhood Councils with issues are becoming the norm. Witness this e-mail about the proposed cancelation of elections in the Silver lake NC to 2010.
DEMOCRACY ALERT!!!What would you think if members of the Bush Administration announced that the November election was cancelled, and they were going to just stay on for a few more years?
Would this be okay in Silver Lake?
Come to the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council meeting:Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00 PM Micheltorena School - 1511 Micheltorena St.VOTE to restore cancelled SLNC elections this year!!
Background: The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council voted at a special meeting to suspend all Board elections until 2010. This means that the terms for every Board member were extended by one or two years without even asking for input from you – the voters who elected them. (The L.A. City Clerk will administer all NC elections starting in 2010, which means that the SLNC had to choose between extending current terms and having its annual election in 2008. Having a 2008 election gives you more say in who serves on this board. It will also allow voters to choose new board members this year rather than having any vacancies filled by appointment by the board from now until 2010).
Many community members have publicly objected to this and demanded a 2008 election, including current and former SLNC board members and leaders from the Silver Lake Improvement Association, the Silver Lake Residents Association and CSSLR. The SLNC Board was given several opportunities to have an election this year, but still refused - arguing it would be too much work and too expensive.
In only 6 days, 182 Silver Lake stakeholders recently signed petitions forcing the Board to hold a community vote on whether to have 2008 elections.
Action: This is where you come in – come to the meeting on July 2 and VOTE (expected to be a quick show of hands to restore the democratic process). If enough of you can do this, it will force the SLNC to hold an election this year, as it has every year since it was created in 2003.
VOTE YES to return democracy and accountability to Silver Lake! For more information, please contact:

A fish stinks from the head.
The problem with the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council is not the indidvidual Boardmembers who are pressing their issues, but the LEADERSHIP who are unable or unwilling (or complicit) to actually run the organization. Co-Chairs "Rusty" Millar & Laura Dwan are part of a small clique who continue to desire power/control but have absolutely no idea how to lead. Their ally Jason "Lyin'" Lyon was booted for cheating durng the last election and now his buddies "Rusty" and Laura are trying to hold on to power by extending their terms because they know they would never get re-elected after this short period of their disastrous mis-leadership.
A good question is why did the SLNC REFUSE to engage the communty in serious discussion about any of these issues (the reservoir, the term extensions) - its not like they have been doing anything else!
$50K of our hard earned tax money goes to these guys?
Each year!
The most telling thing about the SLNC is how they voted to extend their terms. Instead of holding a regular meeting and notifying their stakeholders in advance, they held a "special" meeting which allowed them to avoid the mnimum 3 day notice and hold the meeting in 24 hours. This means they posted a notice on Friday afternoon and held the meeting on Saturday morning. Hardly time for the communty to get involved and weigh in. Once they held this rushed meeting, they then loudly proclaimed that the public had been aware of the meeting and it was the public's fault if they were not there to voice any objection.
P.S. What kind of city organization allows people to run under unofficial names like "Rusty""? Whats his real name? What is he hiding in his past? Its arrogant dunderheads like "Rusty" (and "Bradley" at Glassell Park NC) that give NCs a bad name.

What was the result last night? Which side prevailed?

Hey, Hey Silverlake, welcome to the hood. Now you know how Glassell Park "stakeholders" feel. None of our councilmembers have the balls to tell DONE to get their act straight. At least you announce your meetings. Glassell Park NC doesn't even bother. There was an executive board meeting on Tuesday and no one knew. More importantly, no one cares anymore.
Laura Chick, can you audit the 2006-2010 "Diversity Coalition" aka GPNC and see where all our hard earned tax dollars are going?

LA32 wants to do the same-- it's hugo's ploy to stay in power for another two years.

Why would anyone in their right mind run for council? They are better off forming their own non-profits.
No money, no pay, and a bunch of idiots, without all the info. criticizing every move.

Are these NCs making these decisions because the city's rules allow them to do so? If so, I can see where you disagree with the decision, but that's not grounds to call out the police.
Regarding violations of the Brown Act, my anger-filled friends in Glassell Park, you know full well that the City doesn't and can't enforce state laws.
That's the reason that the 912 commission recommended that the City create its own Sunshine Ordinance that would cover such things and would be enforceable by the City. That's what you need to be fighting for.

Guilty as charged here, 10:00 pm. It only cost me $610 in ads to win re-election this time. It's down from about $1,250 last year.

Very intelligent. To avoid having to respond to the substance, you turn to name calling.
That's a lot of anger that you have to deal with.

After all the mess the City Clerk made of this years elections, Silver Lake is going to wish they'd gone ahead and had one this year without the Clerk's muddling.
That's if any of these board members are still around in two more years. The way most NCs go, the bulk of the board will probably be appointed replacements by then.

It sure seems that the Neighborhood councils since Antonio got into office have gone downhill and are very political. If you look at some of the NC boards across the city many of them have the city council member's people on them. City council members couldn't give a shit about NC's but now they are trying to control them. The NC's use to be about caring community volunteers but now they're politican's flaks who will spend the money and do what THEY want.

We just got rid of a bunch of Tony V. 's little toadies and replaced them with non-partisans.
Thank GOD for term limits.

We won't let the mayor's people or our council persons people get elected at our NC. We are too shrewd for them.
This mayor hates neighborhood councils no matter how much he denies it. Actions speak louder than words. With an election coming up, he better start kissing some NC butt. Or anything could happen.
