Joseph Mailander a guy in la • elsewhere • email
In the local case of Love and Consequences, at the LA Times and the New York Times the scribes who fell for the latest and reviewed the book without noticing any inventions in the narrative were also femmes largely unacquainted with either gangs or crime statistics or the science of probability in general. The one at the local fishwrap has already defended herself, unflinchingly, assigning all the blame elsewhere and holding herself completely harmless. The one at the NYTimes...the notorious Michiko Kakutani...once described by the late Norman Mailer as "a one woman kamikaze...who disdains white male authors"...and who "can't be fired because she's a feminist..."
Now that they've pulled the book, nobody gets to read it. But when you go back and read Kakutani's NYT review, the narrative she describes reads like pure fantasy:
Both her older brothers, Terrell and Taye, were sent to prison, and after his release, Terrell, who’d talked of getting a straight job so his children wouldn’t grow up in the ’hood, was shot to death by Crips as he sat outside Big Mom’s house, waiting to meet his son for his weekend visit. Ms. Jones’s friend Marcus, a brother figure with whom she used to drive around Los Angeles, dreaming of what life might be like “beyond the lights” of the city, was shot and killed, she says, and her boyfriend, Slikk, was arrested for an attempted murder he didn’t commit.Keeping score: that's one brother, murdered; one best friend, murdered; one b/f, framed for life---and nobody from editor to publisher to reviewer found it odd enough to make a single fact-check call, or thought to google a news story.
If you swallowed all that as the experience of one person who still found time to string a narrative together all by her lonesome later, without even making a single phone call inquiring about any of the principles, well, it's no wonder you thought the Brat Pack were writing masterpieces in the early eighties.
Victimization is everywhere in this story: after the author made a case of herself as victim, the editor and publisher then became the victim, then the reviewers became the victim, etc. But how complicit is this victimization? And what has happened to due diligence in everyone's rush to be victim?
We've seen earlier in this election cycle how sexy it is to be a victim in America---Hillary's whole campaign is fueled by it, and it's no accident the supreme contest for the presidency is between a cheated-on feminist and a sotto voce African American. This Woman's History Month, via publishing, the lesson is no less than that we may have reached true equality at last; it's a time when we are finding that women can lie, deceive, be deceived, and spin their mistakes away, all without flinching, and just as readily as men can.

Joe M,
Don't forget every low life gang-banger in Los Angeles is also victim. The cholo was forced to do a drive-by on a rival gang member because he is a victim of society.
I'm sure their is one idiot among us, who will blame the republicans or the government for the crimes of all the low life losers and criminals in society.
Even people like Al Shaprton, have come around and realized that some people need to get off their lazy ass and raise their own kids or take control of their own lives.
Playing the victim, has been used as an excuse by too many people, to justify any and all types of failures.

JM,
Interesting post.
The fishwrap scribe's apology
Others find her gang lingo, in hindsight, unbelievable and even funny.
We can look back to recently, an exhaustive count of postings from your bloggers who picked off the unbelievable, even funny fake gang language your 'gang bangers' and 'gang expert' ect. posters used night and day here on MS. It sure would impress us all if blogs held themselves to the same minimal standards that they try to hold to the fishwraps.

The old fool still can't spell "etc" or "their" but loves to use the words xenophobe, vitriol and draconian to try and impress us. The falso has gone Anony-Mouse.

JM, excellent insight into the psychology of electoral politics, "the victim, it's just common sense folks, our savior keeping us safe from the evil trying to usurp our freedoms,(they hate freedom!), Mom, apple pie, the flag, and daniel boone, protection from the barbarians at the gate, I will protect our values and our American way of life, those people just don't think like us, they don't value human life like we do, divide and conquer. ect ect ect.
All successful tactics that have something in common with another successful piece of Orwellian thought, "doublespeak and the big lie", (see Dr. Goebbles, Karl Rove), in fact I think most enlightened people would admit to the fact that we in the USA have been willing victims of these tactics the last 8 eight years.
Who was it that said "never underestimate the gullibility of the American people?
Is it surprising that many of these same and deceptive ploys are being utilized again this election year?
By the way JM, in the interest of fair play and general loathing shouldn't the Republican candidate Sen John McCain also be included as "the victim"?
After all he is an old white man, cancer survivor, a wounded aviator shot down by the Commies only to survive torture and depredation in a N Vietnamese POW prison, a maverick who bucks the right wing Republicans when his morals and conscience demand he put his career and future on the line? Well doesn't he? Come on he does, doesn't he?
Good post and food for thought.

There has to be more than meets the eye regarding the demise of Mayor Sam. You couldn't make the blog this bad so quickly if you tried.

But some of here on Mayor Sam's blog are smart enough to recognize a racist who hates "mayates", but tries to hide his true xenophoic, vile, vitriolistic feelings about African Americans.

Interesting post Joe. Just stick with Jane Austen then or perhaps a little Lauren Weisberger. The heroine usually wins in the end ... although a few might argue that Obama is the Mr. Darcy of campaign '08.

Reminds me of the Oprah scandal when she was touting that non- fiction self help book, which also turned out to be fabricated.
