Jack,
I could not be happier that this settlement has occurred. The teachers at my child's elementary school in the valley have been holding a job action for months that has meant no staff meetings or other after school meetings. I wonder if teachers were given the choice of either picketing downtown or attending staff meetings, if it would be a moot point.
I sympathize with the teachers that want to let their concerns be known, however, these elementary students that are being affected and effectively under-served, have no say in how quickly the payroll system or any other bureaucratic issue will be solved.
Let's hope that we can get through the rest of the school year without UTLA ordering the teachers to sit on the sidelines to protest another issue outside of the students control.

I guess that if the mayor WASN'T OUT OF TOWN ALL THIS TIME, this could have been resolved much earlier.

You are the people you have to find an excuse to walk away from occasionally because they just fucking won't shut the hell up. They have an opinion on everything, whether they do or not. For those that don't know, Jack is a professional comedy writer. In his class, we are all assigned to each put out a weekly comment for our grade consideration. Some of this material is absolutely brilliant.
I can't say the same of some of the comments that criticize the fine Hoffian humor. All I can say is grow up or read another blog.

These teachers sound like another argument in favor of homeschooling.
If that was banned in California because of one woman's alleged abuse to her kids (a woman who hadn't even finished h.s., very unusual in home school world, where all the parents I knwo are college-educated), then all public schools in California should be banned. Certainly in L A.
Yesterday an assistant principal at Markham Middle in S L A dragged home a 13-year old student and raped her, while some teacher in Van Nuys assaulted several young girl students, the list goes on.
There are the gangs, drugs and sex in most middle schools, even in some good ones.
And even tony private schools like Harvard-Westlake and one in La Jolla were featured in today's L A Times article on severe bullying.
Who's in favor of mandatory public schooling? Why, A J Duffy and the Teacher's unions, of course.
