Just To Piss Off You Know Who: The Jack Sheldon Trailer
I mentioned attending the premiere of Doug McIntyre's new docu-pic about Jack Sheldon last night, Trying To Get Good: The Jazz Odyssey of Jack Sheldon. Doug made the film with his wife, actress Penny Peyser. For whatever reason, along with everything else on the blog, it has our favorite anon-i-ninny going apolectic, and he feels it's "corrupt" that I "promote" the film. (For Christ sake its a film about a local jazz legend, how freakin' controversial should that be!) Because we would not want to disappoint our friend, here is the trailer for the film for your enjoyment.
Labels: doug mcintyre, jack sheldon, penny peyser

No, you're doing this because you're a kiss-ass.
And, you're doing this to "push down" your misguided earlier post.
Kiss ass. Repost all of those comments here, Higby. Show if you've got the balls to handle the criticism.
You're using "your" blog to vamp for a radio guy's wife's film. Meanwhile, the Times has two very relevant stories today about use of recycled paper for all city offices, and another about the city council's wage law being shot down.
But go ahead and post frivolous crap about friends-wives-films.

See if you'll allow the comments from the earlier post to be reposted here.
Show you can handle the heat:
FILE THIS ONE UNDER "WHO CARES"?
I guess Mayor Sam is just trying to let us know that he gets out of the house once in a while.

You wanna talk about something more relevant: check out CityWatch newest piece on how S-T just got blindsided by an agreement between the City and Home Depot to forego a full EIR and open earlier...taking into account renovations already made. There will be arbitration headed by wife of Mark Ridley-Thomas, no less, but just like a lot of people said, no way was the city going to eat the huge lawsuits from H-D. Joe Barrett and gang just got the good news March 4th so they've been spinning too fast to let Mayor Sam in on it...

Only two posts on this entry 12 hours later.
It's true. No one cares about what movie Mayor Sam saw. He's just trying to plug his friend's-wife's-documentary.
Higby, you're as corrupt as any public figure. I guess the rules don't apply to you.

Thanks MS, great musician and character Jack Sheldon, his funny personality really shined on the Johnny Carson show when he was a member of the Doc Severinson "Tonight Show Band". The band had some of the greatest LA musicians like Sheldon, Snooky Young, Frank Rosselino,.
Most of these guys and many of the great LA jazz musicians came out of the Stan Kenton Orchestra who was a great innovator in the genre of jazz and especially the so called "West Coast Jazz Scene"
Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Maynard Fergusson, Shelly Manne,.
LA has been blessed with some great musicians and Jack Sheldon was right there in the forefront, I am looking forward to seeing the DVD.
Thanks

You're comparing Antonio's or the Council's corruption to Mayor Sam plugging a movie? You people who work in government are really sick.
Don Q. Jack Sheldon is definitely a legend and he's still playing regularly now. He used to play with not only the Tonight show band but Benny Goodman, Merv Griffin and many others. If you're old enough to remember he was the voice of the Schoolhouse Rock cartoons back in the 70s on ABC.
Well I don't think Mayor Sam is plugging the movie but I look forward to seeing it myself.

If you're going to put yourself out there and ridicule people on a blog, people are going to criticize you.

839 gets it! Yes!
Look at the top of this page, and it says "Home of Los Angeles Politics".
It does NOT say "Shilling for radio hosts wifes passtimes."
If Higby wants to plug a friend for the hopes of getting air time, then he should SAY SO.
And yes, if he's going to criticize others, he has to take it, too.
This blog is not supposed to be plugging films of radio hosts wives. I expect Higby to now come back and say, "well, it's the film of a woman whose husband TALKS about LA politics, therefore it's a legit subject."
Bullshit. I like this blog as much as anyone, but this is a total cop out.

So not only is Higby now doing movie reviews, but he's also promoting the sale of the DVD's?
What is up with that?

Maybe if Higby wasn't so self-absorbed to be giving movie reviews, he'd have time to pay attention to things like the City Clowncil's labor ordinance being struck down.
Isn't this more important than shilling for radio hosts wives?

Higby, why are you not posting my legitimate comment about this post?
You posted what I think is a self-serving string instead of a really important LA Times story that impacts vastly more people.
If you're not going to allow fair commentary, you might as well shut down the blog altogether.

For a blog that criticizes the LA Times a lot, note that this post is from the Times' BLOG.

The history of jazz in Los Angeles is an interesting story. And, Jack has been a major player. I think it would be an interesting DVD to see. Thanks for the info.
Maybe you should have an "entertainment" section.

Wow! Looks like we got a major dum dum here. I don't know whose comments about what didn't get posted but after I get done with this comment I'll check the que for you.
Now what misconceptions do I need to dispel?
First off the film was also made by McIntyre not just his wife. Really, with all due respect to Penny Peyser, this was Doug's dream project, he's been a huge fan of Jack for years.
Next off if you were not sitting around with your head up your ass waiting for Hillary Clinton to win since your beloved John Edwards did not, you would know that Jack Sheldon is a MAJOR part of the LA jazz scene and that's he lived here most of his life.
Jack Sheldon of course was also the voice of "Bill" in the animated civics lesson of the 70s "I'm Just A Bill." (As well as Conjunction Junction and others).
By the way, did you know Mayor Villaraigosa has a very BRIEF appearance in the film?
Also, Doug is not a "friend" of mine. I appeared on his show once (if he was a friend he'd have me on more often right? LOL) and I've met him a couple times. If you want to buy his DVD, go to a screening of the film or borrow it from the library when they have it, great. If not, your choice too. We often promote films, musical performances, books, etc. here when we find ones that we enjoy.
And when did I say I can't take criticism? This is one of the few blogs where you can bash away on the bloggers as much as you want. I even admonished other writers at this blog for deleting critical posts. Its your forum to make yourself look stupid; I would never want to take that away from you.

Maybe.

Oooh I see Mayor Sam has ads on the blog now for Universal Studios he must be shilling for GE now how corrupt!
Anonymous said:
Honestly Mayor Sam, I think the person is peeved that the blog is being used for something other than Los Angeles politics and I don't think an appearance in the film by Villaraigosa qualifies it as a political subject.
But I think you've handled it with a great attitude, especially for allowing him or her to post here the comments posted earlier. That shows that you're fair.

The obsessive rancor of this contrarian will be apparent moments after she sees my name.
Symptoms will be very apparent, gnashing of teeth, posting up cut and paste items about "undocumented workers" (this'll get a reaction), xenophobic tirades, paranoid accusations that various posters here are actually someone else or that so and so is actually so and so, the strong possibility of her tossing stink bombs she calls jokes and humor, and most telling of all will be her uncontrolled posting, one after the other ad nausea.
