AUDIO: CM Dennis Zine Speaks To John & Ken About How Villaraigosa Convinced Him To Vote "Yes" On Illegal Phone Tax

Oooh weee....Big DZ (Councilmember Dennis Zine) is sure a glutton for punishment, calling into John & Ken's radio show to defend Villar's shady phone tax, and to explain how Villaraigosa convinced CM Zine and CM rieg Smith to change their "opposition" to a "yes" vote.

Mayor told Zine without this phoney phone tax, the City of Los Angeles would have to cut:

* 2700 police
* HALF the Fire Department
* 4200 general field civilian employees (1/6 of the workforce)

CM Zine says, "I didn't sell anything to Tony Villar." (In response to J&K grilling him about "selling out to Tony Villar".)

OH NO: CM Zine and CM Parks are saying that the labor union didn't get a raise on their last contract...

FACT IS, the unions got "0" in the first year of their 2004-2007 contract -- BUT, then picked up 6.25% by the end. That AIN'T ZERO, Y'ALL!

I hope the CMs saying the union coalition didn't get a raise, were simply misinformed because they didn't check ZUMATIMES.COM for the actual, credible truth. (As opposed to purposefully misleading the public.) BIG DZ...WHAT'S UP WIT IT, DOUGH? (Don't besmirch the (Big) D and Z initials, y'all.)

Money quote: "I didn't sell anything to Tony Vilar!"

Even though he caved, I have respect for Zine; he and Parks are the only CMs with the cojones to enter a combat zone and defend their votes.

Zine and Parks sure ain't tellin' the truth when it comes to the unions. ZD, run those zero increases the CMs say the unions got through the Bat-computer. Guess Zine and Parks are the last to know. Well, maybe Janice too. Didn't she say something at Council about a 13% increase? Must read the Daily Breeze.

I'll go for the 4200 general field civilian employes. Most of them dont do too much any way.

The City's annual revenues skyrocketed 14% since the 2005 budget.

The cell phone tax generates 4% of the revenues.

If Zine actually believed a 4% cut would require laying off 2700 police, half the Fire Department, etc., well, YOU do the math.

Hi Walter,

Dennis has been a schill for the unions since his day with the PPL. I can even say that I met Dennis for the first time at a SEIU 347 Dinner about seven years ago. RINO he is, co trary to the "well endowed' escort that evening.

Let's layoff the city employess who are aides to the city council and Mayor before laying off the police.

Fire 20% of DWP and save lot's of money.

Layoff the people who work in city hall first.

Zine said the Mayor tortured him by threatening to make him watch 10 consecutive hours of ZD's tapes without a break unless he changed his vote.

An investigation is in process to ascertain the true facts. If proven true, the Mayor could be removed from office for using such cruel and inhuman tactics.

Zine is the biggest moron on council next to Smith, Greuesome, Hahn and the rest of the morons. What type of man behaves like a coward and changes his mind after talking to Antonio? A man who has lost his balls. Yup, Zine and Smith both acted like cowards and want us to believe they did us a favor because now we can decide whether or not to vote for the tax. Too bad we don't have any leadership in this city. Nothing but a bunch of kiss ass lapdogs. What happened to the days of men standing up for what they believed in no matter the criticism? Long gone from LA.

City union contracts
Re "Sweetheart of a deal" (Oct. 18): L.A. City Councilman Ed Reyes said it best - "When you look at this city and all its needs, this is money that can be better spent." Too bad he was talking about the war in Iraq and not about the new five-year salary deal with the six L.A. unions.

Council payroll
I notice Councilman Dennis Zine has 18 people on his staff. Other councilmen have as high as 24 staffers. It would be of interest to know what the payroll amounts to for this staff. Also what do they do? I have lived in the Valley for 30 years and have never seen a staff member. I wrote to Zine once and never got a response. By cutting this staff, maybe we could save enough to stop the council from dreaming up new ways to tax us.

Payroll emergency
Re "L.A.'s taxation `emergency"' (Oct. 17): If the voters rightly reject the phony taxation emergency measure in February, the City Council and mayor should put on the ballot a measure reducing their payroll by a few percent. After all, the pay scales were agreed to upon the assumption that there would be money to pay for it. To forestall layoffs when in dire straits, businesses would ask their employees to participate in the pain, not their customers.

It appears also that the city knew about the potential loss of telephone tax revenue while they were negotiating the latest labor contracts with the unions. This once again shows a complete failure of responsible stewardship and planning by our bloated officials.

City matters
Re "Council supports pullout from Iraq" (Oct. 17):Wendy Greuel is my Los Angeles city councilwoman and it occurred to me that she has been elected to conduct business by and for citizens of Los Angeles on matters related to the city. The last time I checked, the City Council of Los Angeles was not in charge of decisions made about troop deployment. Greuel certainly did not represent me with this action.

It would be nice if she would work on matters directly connected with the city of Los Angeles. God knows the DWP needs supervision and there are a jillion other matters that need attention in the city. I'm disappointed with all the council members who want to work at the federal level instead of finishing needed business here at the local level.
