It is no stretch to say that Los Angeles can become the 21st Century version of a "BANKRUPTED NEW YORK CITY". Zine and Smith passed on a momentous opportunity to draw a "FISCAL LINE IN THE SAND" .
Now, get ready for a populist backlash aimed at the "ADDICTS OF SPENDING" in City Hall. For addicts, sometimes hitting rock bottom is the best path to recovery. To Zine and Smith, leaders your not, and in 10 minutes the "John and Ken" lashing will commences.

To the one who said turnover of private homes has raised their tax revenue by ten percent a year until THIS year (somethng council never mentions, only loss of the "other" phone tax), yes, they have lived high without a regard for responsibility. But more the usual lefties -- Alarcon, Hahn, Reyes... the same ones always wanting more.
Bizarre how a number of CM's praised Hahn for withdrawing "her" $40/ parcel "avg" (means much higher for many, like those who've subsidized the city so far), over what a brace sacrifice "she" is making.
Let's let Chick do her audit before raising taxes any more. But it's not the Mayor's fault really -- he's actually stuck trying to sell this thing after he's presented with the dilemma.
Fee waivers should be limited to a certain amount per district, so the few who most abuse them (Hahn again and a few Hispanics), reign it in. Some others use them very lightly, and they're a useful neighborhood benefit used within reason.
Other things should be made clear: how can the DWP be short on funds for infrastructure of powerlines, yet turn over millions to reduce the city's deficit? This loophole like the one at state level, letting the Republican crooks steal our "excess" gas taxes to the tune of $1.3 billion, which our voters had specified was to go to transportation and mass transit, must be closed. Transparency!
But NOW it's suicidal for you guys to advocate voting down the tax. Given the way they've managed the city, they'll cut cops or LAFD or make road repairs even scarcer.
They need better FUTURE management.

I'm watching the replay of today's council meeting....what a joke. Dennis Zine says, "I don't want to betray the public trust..." But I will! Greg Smith says "We can't make up our minds so we will let the voters decide" Yeah but we will stack the deck by declaring an "emergency" so it will have a better chance to pass. Wendy Gruehl is just dumb. Dennis Zine declares..."AN EMERGENCY IS APPROACHING!!!" The good news is that there are 9 exemptions and one is state and local governments. So the city won't have to pay the tax!!!!!!
More good news....the news media is exempt from the current (soon to be declared illegal) 10% tax!!!

i think angelinos feel relieved councilmember janice hahn “mother of gang violence” decided to wait on the gang tax momentarily, until november 2009. not! the gang tax will be used for non-profit organizations.
If hahn and councilmemebrs are sincere about fighting gang murders, council should stop giving the victims family a false sense of hope when introducing reward motions for information to solve a murder. council needs to allocate that reward money to police, so police can work overtime and solve these senseless killing. this will allow victims family a closure in their lives.
