According to KFI's reporter Eric Leonard, a settlement in the Tennie Pierce case is final. It will be announced at 4:30 PM today out of the City Clerk's office.
Numbers on the table are anywhere between $1,000,000-$2,000,000 dollars. Leonard also disclosed that Pierce's attorney has received lawyer's fees of $1,500,000+ for two other cases. Safe to say that the fleecing of the city treasury is on.
One question remaining, will the Mayor veto this settlement ?? Don't hold your breath,(Answer below).

Smith said a little while ago that he wanted to litigate because Pierce had no case, and the city had a solid one so what happened? Did he chicken out or wasn't he there for something this important? Surprised Rosendahl had the guts to stand up, good for him and Weiss. And Rosendahl is gay, not immune himself from discrimination in years past, I'm sure. But real vs. playing the race card is the issue.
Rocky's office was quoted as saying they didn't think they could get a fair trial downtown because the jury would vote by race, like with O J. Where the city had a strong case, but O J managed to convince the idiot jury that he couldn't fit into that glove. What a C list actor, but smarter than his "peers." What does this say about Rocky's office being able to prosecute anything? He's sending a signal that he'll settle over anything, no matter how strong the city's case. What an idiot. Still the city did better than originally even added up the attorneys fees.

With the million or more it costs to run for any office these days, we've got the same cast of characters over and over because no one can crash the party unless they're connected, or in the case of the Hispanics or South Central blacks, have a low voter turnout and a populace that's easy to buy.
Best we can hope for is that as many as possible are middle of the road. Only rightwingers these days are from the West Valley, like Zine and Smith, but I think that tide is turning again -- the west valley used to have some real lefties in its hippie heyday -- and like it or not, staying in power requires some sort of coalition with the Mexicans (which is what all the current crop of Hispanics are). Best we can do is hope the least radical Mexicans get power. MAV is actually moderate compared to Gil Cedillo or some of the rest of them. Create an internal fund within the LAFD and LAPD for these payout claims so that members will have to face their peers in making these claims, not some anonymous city and citizens. Bet that would end fraud pretty fast.

According to KNBC's Laurel Erickson, this settlement requires Pierce to pay his own attorney fees, unlike the first one, so the city is better off.
Just like Rocky to claim the opposite is true, but what did his office offer? That if if was left to them, they estimated a $7million judgment.
Wasn't Weiss one of the strongest supporters of the original settlement? Why did he vote with Rosendahl?

Mike Feuer is being dredged up again? As better than Rocky, yeah, but... he didn't have a single ally when he was on the City Council, just pointed fingers at everyone else and whined a lot. Totally ineffective, didn't get one single thing done. Now upstate he is more at home, there are a lot of them up there to ally with. Maybe his liberal transportation/ green issues have a place up there. But he's as tough as an eggplant.

7:38, you have pointed out an exception to what usually occurs in jury trial. As a rule, most juries will vote to award, fearing the label of racist.
This is what drove Council to settle, in my opinion. They didn't want to be "whitewashed" with the same label if they refused to settle.

David Zahniser got this one wrong in the L A Times -- he opens his article by saying the city settled because it would have been too embarrassed by the revelations of hazing. Wrong, they settled because Rocky didn't think he could win the case even though many councilmembers saw there was solid evidence to the contrary.
Sure, there was hazing -- gambling in Casablanca? -- but it was all around, with Pierce doing worse stuff like shaving some guy's privates, which some say was a routine initiation. Fratboy stuff, stupid and tasteless, not racist.
He didn't want to drag his family through revelations of what he did.

7:23, as much as I hate to admit it, KFI has a rather good idea. The firefighters should sue Tennie, but sue him for more than he was awarded. That would teach him it's not nice to be rewarded for fraud.

Some black activists held a press conference today, say that the award was too little and insulting, and they'll step up their demands.
And they would demand what, exactly? The dirty deal's been done - Pierce has dropped all other legal actions against the city.
Personally, I would have given him treble damages, matching the same award that a court gave to Al Davis in his suit against the NFL. He won his lawsuit too, but the jury awarded him $1.00 for a total of $3.00 in the treble damage phase.
