Monday Hotsheet at 3 a.m.

The immigration-rights advocate and immigrant woman who has been arrested in LA and deported to TJ does not put the most sympathetic face on the nation's immigration crisis; and, like Cindy Sheehan, that's precisely why she has attracted so much national media attention. Gone from national discourse is the phrase "undocumented"---it's now all "illegal" in mainstream media.

But nor do the Feds hot on the case sound entirely sympathetic either, dispassionately enforcing hypocritical laws while going home to immigrant-built and immigrant-manicured suburban homes.

This is where corporate media work these days---at the antipodes, rather than in the middle. Media are increasingly to America what lead pipes were to Rome: ceaselessly poisonous, ceaselessly rankling, more productive of a schizophrenic culture than of a common sense one.

° ° ° ° °

I don't know what's wrong with you people who buy into that mainstream media stuff, anyway. They only insult your intelligence and call you dum-dums most of the time. (At least we do it here with love and some irony attached). But just look here: the fishwrap of record cites Gallup to tell you that you're a bunch of thieves who'll download anything for the sake of a few minutes of programmable bliss. The other quotidien codwrapper says you're too dumb to teach in our classrooms, so we need to recruit teachers from other countries (even as we're deporting other kinds of workers).

And it's especially Filipinos who are teaching our kids math and science, says the latter.

Imelda Fruto, foreign recruitment specialist for LAUSD, has already gone to the Philippines twice to interview prospective teachers in the past two years and is getting ready for her third trip in October.

[Ed.---but where do you expect someone named Imelda to recruit from, anyway? And we'll bet she's not recruiting in her Mary Janes either...]

Isn't that special, that LAUSD feels it needs to go so far these days to recruit math and science teachers? Maybe you can refresh my memory, but I don't quite remember how the Philippine space program fared through the sixties and seventies. There has to be plenty of untapped math and science talent right here in the good ol' USA, doesn't there?

Have the LAUSD recruiters considered recruiting from Phoenix and Des Moines, the way other industry groups do? I'll bet the round trip is cheaper, especially this time of year.

The Daily Breeze also finds the story newsworthy, and it should be in the aerospace-addled South Bay.

° ° ° ° °

An inquisitive public demands to know---what have I done with MayorSam? Well, the guy with the NoHo soul took a camera to Highland Park and has been quietly padding the content at his NoHo blog Downtown NoHo Times...check out this foto post regarding Security Trust and Savings Bank buildings. It's August, vacation time---I like TravellingSam 2.0, the culture vulture with an eye to architecture and development...

° ° ° ° °

Me, I met up with some bloggers downtown yesterday. They haven't written anything about the trauma of that experience yet, so I stepped in with my own version. Gelato and Pinkberry in Little Tokyo---jeez, what happened to the snow cones down there, anyway?

Let's see if Phony Mahony holds a press conf. in defense of this woman Elvira Arellano. She broke the law several times and deported but she came back. The fact that she was taunting the FEDS got her arrested. These dumb ass illegals use their kids and now Arellano's poor little boy was used and traumatized by the whole incident of her arrest yesterday. Stupid illegals put their kids in this position by being here illegally breaking the law then pretend to be victims. They all need to be deported and FEDS need to go after employers.

Excellent comments on the media. I agree totally. But then quoting the Daily Breeze, to back your point works against you. The Daily Breeze is as corrupt as the LA Slimes and even more so because there are a few people at the LA Times who won't bow down to the corporate greed or to what the powerful want them to write.... unlike the Daily Breeze.

Rick Orlov this morning quotes an anonymous council member, who confirms that the Home Depot dispute is all about Mexicans looking for work outside the stores:

"They (Home Depot) were their own worst enemy," said one council member, who asked not to be identified. "They could have tried to deal with the community here and they refused to do so.

"We have tried to deal with them on other sites with the problems of day laborers or trash and they refuse to accept responsibility. Now, they have to deal with us."

Quite correct. The blight upon the community caused by these folks hanging out in the parking lots and streets surrounding the Home Depots is digusting.

All they need to do is manage the situation by giving them a place to park their run down trucks and themselves that does not look like a Tijuana suberb.

By the way, anyone notice how quiet and pleasant this blog is today without the influence of that other person and his following a three of four jerks?

KTLA reported this morning, that Ms. Arellano had been to three churches and was on her way to a fourth when she was arrested. As one may recall she evaded arrest previously by spending almost a year at another church. Were the churches she visited Catholic? If so, are the Catholic churches turning her away despite their public face? One wonders

Immigration activist arrested (Who the hell nominated her)

U.S. agents take Elvira Arellano into custody in L.A. She became a national symbol when she sought sanctuary in a Chicago church.

By Sonia Nazario and David Pierson, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers August 20, 2007

Elvira Arellano, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who became a symbol in the nation's immigration wars after she took sanctuary in a Chicago church last year, was arrested Sunday by federal immigration agents outside Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Los Angeles.

Arellano, 32, a single mother, moved into a Chicago church a year ago to prevent being separated from her 8-year-old U.S.-born son.

She was arrested Sunday afternoon as she was leaving the downtown Los Angeles church also known as La Placita with her son and a supporter.

Supporters said the car in which Arellano was riding was surrounded by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who took her into custody.

The agency did not say where she was being held but did confirm that Arellano would be deported to Mexico.

She doesn't have to be separated from her child, she simply can not break the law and stay here. Her child is not a criminal, but along with her illegal status she should be tried for child abuse for subjecting her 8-year-old to the mess *she* caused yesterday. What kind of example is she to her son?

If she takes her son, and American citizen, back to Mexico with her to live out an impoveished life, isn't that child abuse.

You neo-nazis don't have a clue and yet you get all happy over the arrest of this one undocumented immigrant who poses such a huge threat to the U.S.. She was a janitor, and most likely a very hard working janitor. Where is the hunt for all those other criminal aliens, better yet, where is the hunt for bin Laden?

You guys take on the most defenseless and yet you cheer when you achieve something you think is of great importance, pathetic.

As was mentioned by her minister yesterday, not Cathlic but Methodist, "It's not as if she left Mexico because she wanted a new t.v. or car, she left Mexico becuase she needed to feed herself." And who exactly was she harming by "cleaning your toilets?"

Something is terribly wrong when the weakest are scapegoated in this country - isn't that what Saddam did? As an American citizen, her son can be President - some chapter this would be in American history.

Look at all the illegal vendors around the city making tax free cash spreading bacteria selling food without wearing gloves and the food in the hot sun for hours. Why aren't clowncil members speaking out about the blight they cause in their districts? We need to clean up LA cause no tourist will come back after being here and seeing the filth the illegals have made in our city.

The reason that Los Angeles has never really developed properly as a great city is esentially generations of NIMBYs like Jim Alger and Joe Barrett. They are only the latest flavor, they go back decades to folks like Roberta Weintraub (who eventually reformed her views), etc.

Gadflies like Zuma Dogg don't figure here in that they really don't hurt. In fact Zuma and his ancestors such as Leonard Shapiro occasionally shed some light where needed. You just have to sit through a lot of crap first.

So ultimately its probably people like Alger who are hurting LA more.

First the woman was used a symbol and was an “activist” for the immigrants laws/rights issue so use your cabeza. I’m sure no one is scared or afraid of her personally, but if the INS issues a deportation order for one person should it be ignored because he/she is a hard working janitor, maid. I personally know women who have crossed the border to have a baby here because of the free and better hospitals and the desire to have an American baby with the expectations of that being used as anchor to stay in this country. And by the way we know there are millions of people here illegally any blind menso knows this.

And you say where is the “hunt for those other criminal aliens” are you acknowledging that we have a problem with criminal aliens.

By the way to the other poster (9:55 AM) Sheriff Baca estimates that 25%-30% of the inmates in the Los Angeles County jails are illegal immigrants not 70% as you write. Don’t just throw out figures that are wrong and just invented in your head. Below is a news article on this subject and the feds put the figure at 23%.

Private companies have been giving away our jobs to foreign workers for years. In the engineering field many jobs are lost to foreign workers brought here because we can’t find enough “qualified” engineers, this has been used as a ploy to hire cheap foreign engineers. We have many engineering college graduates ready to work but instead we allow corporations to use H-1B visa workers.

Just look at the nursing industry and see how many Philippine nurses there are. Many industries have been using the “we don’t have enough qualified applicants story for years” to hire cheaper labor.

I am not a big fan of teachers unions which keep lousy tenured teachers employed, but I hope they can stop this trend in the teaching industry.

Same can be said in spades when a day goes by at City Hall where only respectful, even if upset, people show up at City Hall. A day with no screeching rudeness shouldn't be such a novelty, but sadly it is.

To the posters who are attacking Jim Alger again, even defending THAT PERSON as less harmful -- give it a rest, or go away. (Maybe you ARE that person or one of his few oddball followers.) THAT PERSON posted a thread that was a paranoid rant against Alger who along with some friends only had to respond -- don't you DARE support the weirdo who besmirched someone's good name for no reason. Doesn't matter whether or not you agree with Alger, as I'm not sure I do and I don't know or ever met the guy. It's a matter of complete lack of decency that THAT PERSON has brought to this blog and his appearances at City Council.

Now, back to discussing the issues without that disruption, I hope.

Juan Martinez, Asst Dean at Fuller Theological Seminar, specialist in Hispanic Studies there, speaking on Warren Olney's Which Way L A in defense of Arellano and the "Sanctuary movement." He argues that she is important because she represents the other 12 million plus illegals in the same situation -- exactly, dufus. That's the reason she should have been deported and stayed out of the country the first four times (she started sneaking in before she was even pregnant -- and how normal is it for a woman in her culture to be an unwed mother, just to have an anchor baby?).

Her defense as being a "good mother" and choosing to leave her son behind, is that he has ADD and can get better care in the U. S. Maybe the kid is a nervous wreck from the bizarre life his mother has subjected him to, living in a church for over a year "not even going out to the laundromat," let along her job as a good, hard-working janitor. Living in constant fear with no social life just might not have been so good for the kid, either.

Why couldn't this woman feed herself in Mexico? Many people are poor there, but food is cheap enough that I've never seen anyone there who can't afford tortillas and beans and rice. This woman is a disaster on many levels, good riddance to her and her supporters.

As for the person who complains we are favoring foreign workers over our own: I've seen a lot of young engineers and computer programmers who have unrealistic career goals, like many young people in general, they think they should be running the country after a year, get a huge salary and are ready to sue their employers over minor things like claiming not enough days off, or being made to work overtime.

Give me a Philippine nurse any day. I've had some black nurses and they have all been loud, and overly familiar and intrusive. The Phillipinos have all been sensitive and calming, the total opposite.
Nursing programs were stupidly cut out in many universities including UCLA, where it was replaced by the Chicano Studies program, there wasn't enough money for both programs. Now, they're trying to reopen nursing schools, too late. The reputation or nursing as a career has been hurt nationally, like that of teachers; today's ambitious graduates are less likely to consider it.

All this raises the issue of how do we cope without Mexican workers: let them come in as guest workers, not illegals getting full rights.
Then people like the Arellano woman can be with their kids and work as long as they register, pay fees, and appear annually to account for themselves as productive and having no criminal records.

Gang Funds Misused
Posted by admin on June 2nd, 2007
An arrest in LA has exposed the tip of an ugly iceberg. Hector Marroquin was arrested on gun charges on Wednesday, including sale of automatic weapons and silencers in violation of tough Federal laws. His arrest is ironic since Marroquin is CEO of an outfit called “No Guns” that was set up to help quell gangs.

But the story doesn’t end there, according to investigative reporting by LA Weekly:

No Guns has received more than $1.5 million in funding from Los Angeles, under gang intervention programs;
Marroquin, his wife, son and daughter received salaries in excess of $200,000 per year from No Guns;
A program called LA Bridges has spent more than $100 million with No Guns and similar groups while producing no measurable results. In 2000, the LA city controller recommended that LA Bridges be shut down, and the mayor agreed, but the City Council unanimously reversed the decision. Why? The LA Times found that 172 POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS WERE MADE TO CITY POLITICIANS BY EXECUTIVES AND EMPLOYEES OF 20 OF THE 26 CONTRACTORS FOR LA BRIDGES.
The so called “gang intervention” programs look to me like liberal spending gone amok. The programs exist at Federal, state and local levels where they are very popular with politicians. A lot of money has been thrown at the problem with at most quite modest results.

Substantial sums have slipped into the hands of bad actors like Marroquin who purchased Marrokings Seafood and Bar for $645,000 and also owns an auto yard (the site of an unsolved shooting). He appears to be a poor choice for funding. Gang members have been arrested at Marrokings for gun possession. Marroquin himself has claimed he is associated with the Mexican Mafia while his son Hector Marroquin is an admitted member of the 18th Street Gang and his daughter the L’il Watts Gang. And its not just Marroquin. Mario Corona, member of another group receiving LA Bridges funding, was sentenced to 32 months in prison for transporting a large amount of methamphetamine and being a felon with a gun.

When you are wondering where your tax money goes, read this story again.

READ THIS TO AND THEN ASK WOULD YOU VOTE TO GIVE GANG PROGRAMS MORE MONEY

Ok Why didn't Steve Hymon Mr. Kiss Butt to Antonio include the 26 city staff cars AV has. Lame reporting Steve.

Taxpayers get the bill for elected officials' free ride
By Steve Hymon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
One of the great perks of being an elected official in the city of Los Angeles is the free use of a car. The cars are treated as a taxable benefit. The electeds get free gas, free maintenance and free carwashes, and they can use the car for personal business, as long as they drive it themselves and stay in the Los Angeles metro area. Most of the cars are recent models that sell for about $25,000 to $35,000.And what happens if they get into an accident or need a repair? The city fixes the car, no questions asked. Even better, city mechanics aim to please.
You may be thinking right now, "How do I file to run for office?" But there's a catch: If elected, you may get that free ride, but you'll also have to learn to live on $171,648 annually as a council member, $188,812 as controller, $205,978 as city attorney or $223,142 as mayor.
Car repairs
August 20, 2007

Councilman Ed Reyes
Cost of repairs: $2,876.
Explanation: Car hit while parked, and later Reyes "accidentally hit an awkwardly placed pillar" in City Hall garage, a spokeswoman said.

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel
Repairs: $5,562.
Explanation: Greuel "bumped" car into a condominium parking garage wall in 2003 and "bumped" into a tree in 2006 trying to escape a
tight parking spot, a spokesman said. A deputy driving the car
also "bumped" into a garage
pole.

Councilman Dennis Zine
Repairs: $764.
Explanation: Zine said his Ford Explorer was "keyed" and a taillight was found broken.

Councilman Tom LaBonge
Repairs: $1,221.
Explanation: LaBonge said a neighbor clipped his Crown Victoria while it was parked outside his home.

Councilman Tony Cardenas
Repairs: $1,210.
Explanation: "City Hall parking attendant backed car into structure," a spokeswoman wrote.

Councilwoman Jan Perry
Repairs: $5,131. Plus city staffer totaled city car.
Explanation: Perry said she had one fender bender in a parking lot. As for the other four incidents: "These repairs were the result of wear and tear and damage from other vehicles that occurred while the car was parked," a spokeswoman said.

Councilman Greig Smith
Repairs: $2,168.
Explanation: A teenager riding a scooter ran a stop sign and hit Smith's car, he said. The teen was found to be at fault.

Councilman Jose Huizar
Repairs: $311 for one incident.
Explanation: A city employee knocked off a side mirror during a carwash, Huizar said.

City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo
Repairs: $2,653.
Explanation: His wife hit a pole in the garage at a doctor's office while driving the GMC Yukon without city permission. The vehicle was also keyed and its rear-view mirror stolen, according to city reports.

Controller Laura Chick
Repairs: $8,767.
Explanation: Chick hit a pole in apartment garage in 2002, a spokesman said. Car was also found damaged in a parking lot in 2005, and Chick was struck in a hit-and-run accident in 2006.

The rest all banged up the cars themselves, or were keyed or had mirrors knocked off by passers-by. Except Perry, who along with her staff member have the second-to-Rocky record for dumb driving.

But what about the Supes, who have chauffeurs, apparently? From the story of Yvonne Burke driving herself to her fake condo in Mar Vista, to be driven to City Hall by a driver and then back. Plus they have access to lots of staff cars.

For too long, the supes have been the undisputed kings of L. A. and lack the intense scrutiny of the Mayor and City Council. No wonder Zev was quoted in the L A T couple days ago trying to pass the buck on M L K disaster, saying: "The problem was here way before any of us...It's in the walls."

So I guess a dozen years isn't long enough for any of them to have taken responsibility. And since "it's in the walls," does that mean the hospital was haunted with racially divisive stupidity from the beginning?

Good thing voters in L A have no collective memory, and most haven't even been here for a dozen years, let alone the 25 years ago when Zev railed against the rail lines and subways and got his buddy Waxman to freeze federal funding for it, too. All while he pushed through the Westside Pavilion over the objections of residents and Laura Lake (who is now his partner on stopping the sale of the Federal Building, one good move finally).

Or else he'd have a hard time convincing people that he's leading a "people's revolution" to insist on funding for mass transit and more responsiveness to the community when it comes to development and traffic. He would be funny if this weren't all so sad.

All those supes need more scrutiny.
They have benefited for too long from charisma-power that couldn't light a 40-watt bulb between the 5 of them.

How come LAT doesn't talk about MAV office's 26 cars?

Let's focus on MAV office's 26 cars.

Don't we want to see their repair costs just as much?

If the gang program is soooooo ... important, they should allocate additional spending ahead of everything else in the CURRENT budget! MAV should do it! Did he?

They should then try to raise tax for the repair of their cars!

That is getting the priority right! If they don't even know the priority, why should they be in office?

STFU!

Zuma Dogg has pulled in more readers to this blog than 3 mayoral scandals and a terrorist attack could.

Apparently none of you lemmings understand the media dance between content and eyes on said content.

Shut up and start your own blogs. I can gaurantee that none of you would pull 1% of the readers Zuma has attracted here.

Alger is a man angry that his spotlight has dimmed. He is a VERY effective gadfly/activist. But he is a politician in training waiting for his day to sell out.

Another thing, all the attacks on Zuma as wanting to be black should just be directed at blacks, because those are the people you actually despise. LA is like thou South...but with palm trees. You undercover yuppies eat your vegan pitas and wear leather Steve Maddens.

Hypocrisy, mediocrity and bloviation are your hallmarks.

Just announced, Bernie is running for Burke's seat as supe. Ridley-Thomas another likely contender. Guess you better not run if you're not black, even though the area is largely Latino. (But that's fine, there are relatively few responsible black leaders these days.)

Bernie is touting his emphasis on fighting gangs and his fiscal responsibility and record as head of Budget Committee.

A little ironic in that he's getting a pillorying on this blog as behind Janice Hahn's gang tax.

Let's side with Laura, and demand to see where and how all our past tax hikes have been spent. Funny, once they fool the voters into voting for some feel-good thing on the ballot, no one is every accountable for it again.

People should remember all the corruption of Bitter Bernie. He knew about Rampart and tried to cover it up. He promoted a friend to Deputy Chief knowing he was being investigated by the IRS and FEds for money laundering. Then Bernie has gotten campaign donations from the LA Bridges gang contractors. Ohhh and lets not forget his sorry butt got canned for being one of the worst Chief's in LA. But I say as long as his sorry butt is out of city hall a lot of LAPD coppers will be celebrating.

*****************

Since I have seen many corporate CEOs indicted for embezzlement and fraud (see list of top 100). The list does not include recent infamous corporate thieves from Enron, Tyco, WorldCom, Diebold and etc, etc, etc, etc ….. We should hire our corporate CEOs from India and get honest CEOs at a much lower salary. A Google search of the words “CEO fraud” returns an almost endless number of criminals.

I wonder would a CEO hired from India work at Disney for only 14 months and then collect $140 million when fired. I believe Ovitz complained about too much overtime and having to share the top spot with Michael Eisner, he wanted to whole run the company after a few months, and he sued to keep his big heist of $140 million.

7:04: Bribery and corruption are built right into any business dealing in India, so I'm sure the executives would feel right at home here. The professionals, on the other hand, can't compete with that level of corruption and have to come here to make it with their skills and brains.

LAT printing those car repair costs may be part of the tactic to divert our attention away from villar, as they did with yvonne burke and rocky stories.

Otherwise, why would LAT print all other elected city officials' repair bills but leave out mayor office's?

They want to save villar by implying all other officials seem corrupt or wasteful anyway, and hopefully we will forget about villar for a while. Not.

The more LAT don't want us to know, the more we want to find out.

So how much did we have to pay for repairing villar office's fleet of 26 cars?

Seems the L A Times is thinking the same thing, that it's time for the nincompoop supes to come into their line of fire, the next bunch placed into the boxing ring.

An editorial Wed 8/15 about MLK says, it's more than MLK that is failing. "The county's foster care system, its jails, its probation department -- all have flirted with collapse.

The supervisors may be politically craven, but they are not irrational. They have little control over the billions of dollars they must spend. They have no leader. They find clout where they can, in their five separate domains. The system works poorly for the people they serve...it's time to rethink how the entire county is governed."

Billions of dollars that they MUST spend, and they're clueless as to how to manage it. No plans, no leaders.

This is where the media has to turn next. The City Council is getting a lot more of a thrashing because it is open. They have to contend with a certain person and his buds, and last week Miriam whatever called them out for going out of town on their retreat and not paying for the measly 15 thousand it cost out of their own pockets. There is the endless questioning of fee waives (which seem to have been used more by a few, and some of that criticism is justified).

But all that is peanuts compared to the money that could be freed up by the supes for LAPD, which can't get the money for more cops or even radios. For the jails (although I think monitoring devices should be used more often, anyway). For the infrastructure and subways and rail -- that Zev says he wants so badly.

WHERE is all their billions of dollars going then, if not here?

I can't understand why the desires of foreign nationals (who are marginally identified, much less income taxed) appear more important to certain politicians than the will of the tax-paying, legally voting citizens of this city?

Don't we already have enough undocumented workers? Do we need everyone in Mexico to move here, because they desire their families to stay together? The second sentence is rhetorical; you don't need to answer it.

I know! This is really still Mexico, and the laws of the U.S. don't apply to Mexicans!

And if LaBonge blames the damge to his car on a neighbor, why hasn't the neighbor or the neighbor's insurance company paid for the damage?

jack at 10:49: agree, and noticed that too. guess J M has gotten his mind a little addled by plowing through too much of a certain person's mental pollution. But we're all so relieved anyway, that it's a quibble in the overall scheme of things.

"None of you lemmings understands the dance between content and eyes on said content," says Edge/ZD herein. By way of explaining why ZD has brought in more business than three (oh?) Mayoral scandals and a terrorist attack.

My mind is clouding up already, time to go lay some lead pipes on the peripheries of something and contemplate how it relates to schizophrenia. On this blog, somehow it all begins to make sense. I'd better go reform LAUSD now, with my newfound wisdom.
