While a baby's death is clear evidence of failure of some sort, it is very disappointing to me to see Gloria Molina convict a social worker before all the facts are known about Baby Jasmine:

After all, someone may even end up blaming County supes for their "zero tolerance of children in the containment zone" policy....

Sam Hall Kaplan on downtown Nimbyism: residents of the arts district are opposing "a proposal for a restaurant, gourmet shop and a lounge bar to be located in an already designated retail building at 515 S. Molino St." Though the residents have lost, he relates it to a nascent movement that will likely oppose higher density downtown in the future.
None of the local cultural blogs linked to my review of Patti Smith at Santa Monica Pier, even though they didn't feature any of their own either. That's not a problem with my review, it's a problem with them [ed.: and if you want ego, we have plenty here to go around]. Especially the way they cover women over 45---they don't. Regardless, I'll be back in SaMo for Los Lobos in two weeks for the season finale.

I don't think it's Patti Smith's age per se, "being over 45" that keeps people from being that interested in her -- look at Madonna, who's 50ish. But looks and acts half her age. Patti is from an era where earthiness in the Janis Joplin style is what she was shooting for, that raw, primal energy, which comes across in shows i've seen of her on tv -- didn't catch the live show at the Pier.
Rosanna Arquette made a doc about rocker women of the earlier era, and Patti was featured too. She's just doddang ugly and proud of it, doesn't even run a comb through her hair or use makeup, crooked teeth, plus she's out of shape -- some of the women commented that they were about the music not the sex kittens many women rockers are today. They don't have to sell sex, but if you're gonna look at someone for an hour or more, they gotta either be cute or have something visual.
Well, that's cool, but that's why Madonna still draws crowds, still looks hot, while the oldtime rockers who don't play the image game, don't draw younger crowds.

Whenever anyone wanders in there who isn't one of his few supporters, like the lady he "interviewed in his van" he boasts on his other post, they look like they're in the wrong place. It must feel really creepy, being there with just him, matt and two women who say they love zuma and we "need him" at City Hall.

Most of the time. Sometimes just the way they’re dressed (er, Zuma ring a distant bell?), the way they hold their face. Someone who is overly friendly to perfect strangers. When I spoke to Mike Higby about you along time ago, he expressed his desire to simply drive more hits to the website. Mistaking quantity for quality he has allowed your dribble for far too long. I empathize with the City Council members who are forced to listen to your self promoting ramblings about this radio show or that website. It is not a far stretch to assume that someone who may be inclined to show up at a City Council meeting might see the likes of you and few others and feel safer locked on the wrong side of an insane asylums wall and thus stay home, and that is sad.

Because many, many people tell you what they think of you, your vanity tells you it's ONE person and you pick a new victim every week. You had no right to drag a man's name into the mud for this non-reason.

Joe, LAT finally got its review of Patti in today's paper -- did you know she's 60 years old? Awesome powerful voice, still sounds the same even if she never did look too good up close. But great on the stage.
